I started with a $300 Craigslist special cub caset. It lasted 3 mows. This time of year the lawn supply stores are getting rid of last years models and most brands offer 0% financing. I’m $100 for 4 years with 0% and 1k down on a bad boy 36” and extremely happy with the decision. My .02 is get your last mower and from what I’ve read make sure it has a kawasaki
 
Best “cheap” option is a used real JD lawn tractor in good shape.

I have a Toro Zmaster commercial mower and do not regret the money spent.
 
This summer I reclaimed parts of the yard that I've neglected for the last twenty years, and for those I need some serious traction... I was looking at Husqvarna with locking diffs but found that most of the husky dealers in Northern Virginia aren't keeping them in stock stock anymore... Meanwhile on marketplace I was seeing used Kubota 4wd lawnmowers going for about what the new Huskys were...

I ended up with a GR2120 in excellent condition for 3k, and it's far above anything I could find in a gas mower...

I really think it's worth purchasing used tractors at the low end vs lawn mowers at the high end..
