before you can get ownership of the storage property, you must have a court order allowing it. That means small claims court. The storage owners will take your $ and consider the debt paid, but the property is still your "buddies" and they still won't let you in without a court order.
Some states allow vehicles to be transferred for lack of payment on storage, some don't. They could get a mechanic's lean, maybe...
Either way, without court order for you to take the property, you would be stealing. you'd end up in jail and your buddy could sue the storage unit owners, so that is likely a road that won't be traveled.
Call him and bug him about the $$$. Otherwise, forget about it and move on
