More TBI issues

Good point, what should I do to make sure It's working right? Will a visual inspection do or do I need to do something more? A couple of ya'll have mentioned doing a pressure check, how do I go by doing that and should that be done before anything else?
Check the fuel line pressure. You'll have to borrow, rent, or buy a guage. Might as well buy one to keep. They do come in handy. Pep Boys or any parts store has them for about $30.00.

Do you have a MAP sensor on it? if so make sure its getting constant vacuum, and not vacuum at WOT only. This will cause it to dump fuel like crazy also.

it would be really hard for the MAP to get vacuum at Wide open throttle................................

Didn't you want to spend $1500 on somthing?

Put a fuel pressure guage on the TBI anywhere after the pump and before the TBI unit. Watch the pressure. It should hold fairly constant reguardless of engine load.

I fought a 'lean pop' condition from my NEW pump not holding enough pressure. It held 9.5psi at idle and droped to 4 with any sort of throttle..

That TBI is totally repairable. You have most of the info you need to repair it right on this tread. You may open up a whole new can of worms with the Holley Pro-jection. I've heard too many horror stories about them.

Well I mean its his decision for the most part, and he's pretty damn fed up with the current setup, he's owned the truck since midway throu this summer and has only been able to drive it like once or twice and everytime its ran like crap. I don't know i mean I don't mind tryin to repair it but like I said he's gettin sick of the current setup, lol. With the holley projection all you pretty much do is bolt it on and dial it in with the in cab controler. Like I said we'll see, its his choice.

People are giving you good advice based on wierd problems like what yager was suggesting.

TBI is an insanely simple system, your compaining about electrical, it barelly has any. The problem is simple i am sure. Did you pull a plug yet and go threw the simple check list. it probably has mud in the distributer.

Ok my.02
I would in this order
1) Fix TBI (this really would be simple)
2) Change the whole set up over to a rusty quadrajet that was beeyond repair
3) Walk...or drive a kia or some shit
4) Put the Holley Projection kit on

And exactly how is a Holly pro-jection different than a TBI setup?

On second thought, you're right. Put the pro-jection on. I'll give him $20 for all the junky TBI stuff.

I'll go $25 on the TBI, and Ill pick up or pay shipping
:flipoff2:

Oh yeah Rich, How is Holley Projection different?
1 has a Shitty controller/modulator that had a 50% fail rate OUT OF THE BOX and was never addressed and the other was a stock GM piece...

fix the tbi ricky

ricky i know i'll get in touch with you fast on here... from what i've read lets just go through all the steps they have told us... or lets find a 454?? but really when u get back up here lets knock this crap out so we can go wheelin again and break something else k?

Never Said it was different I just like the fact that you have a box with a couple dials on it and thats that, instead of tryin to figure out where the hell this or that wire goes in the factory harness.

We'll get er done eventually I guess . . . .

Dude, seriously. It's been almost a week. Change the fuel filter. It's only like $20. If you don't want to change it, at least pull it and see if you can pour gas through it. If you can, move on to a pressure check. If you can't, problem solved.

Holley

Stay away from the Pro-Jection. We tuned on one for a year and never got it to work right. Now the 2 grand and up systems work great. Plus the TBI system so simple. It should not take more than about 30 minutes to fix any TBI problem...and that includes 25 minute run to the parts store.

Aight well feel free to come fix it for me :flipoff2:

Still havnt got around to messin with it yet, end of the semester is looming and test and projects are gettin numerous, not sure when i'll get to it.

I like Bud-Ice, Mich-Ultra and sometimes Bud-Light. Drag that thing over to the New Rock Garden and we'll check it out.

yea well we tryed to drive it to his house from state last night and it was drivin like crap as usual then it backfired really bad and totally died, now it wont start anymore . . . . stupid electrical crap.

Check the fuse for the pump. If it's toast, you've got a short or bad ground. I had this problem on my 90 K5. Put in a new fuel pump, and still had the same problem. Finally found a chaffed wire under the brake booster.

Is the fuel pump the factory in-tank deal, or aftermarket external?

You need to find out which year the ECM is from. If it's for a 90+, it'll never work right. They used VSS signals from the t-case. You need an ECM from an 87-89.

But like everyone else here, get a new filter on there, then start diagnosing.
