This past weekend I replaced the U-joint that was bad. Since I saw it leaking 90w out of the tube, so I went ahead and replaced the axles seals. This included pulling both side axles, and the carrier out. I replaced both inner axles seals, and both U-Joints. The passenger side was still good, so I will grease it up and save it for the crash box for the XJ, just as a spare.
In my previous post I had mentioned that I could not get it to go into 2WD, with it still up on jack stands, I had Leslie put E brake on, pull into Neutral, and work the transfer case lever. It went into 2WD with little problem. I think binding is my issue there. I didn't see any slop in the linkage. Contributing factors may be that I have a lot more tread on the front, than the rear, and they are two different tire brands too.

Next issue:

This an 4.0 with fuel injection. I have already replaced the fuel regular(it was leaking) and the Jeep came with a new one. Now I find the injectors are leaking. Not so as you see it puddle, but you can smell it. and see a little wet and a puff of evaporating gas as it hits the manifold when running.
My question is since I have never replace or repaired fuel injectors for this engine, is there a seal or O-ring that can be replaced, or, do you have to replace the whole injector?

another issue:

I bought it with the tranny not shifting by it's self. It came with a new TCM from pull a part. I installed it, and put the fuse back in, still does not shift by it's self. So I pulled the fuse and have been shifting it manually. I know it's possible to have had two bad boxes. Especially since both were used, but, is there something else that could be the issue, and what do I need to look at?

TIA

Chip are the injectors leaking around the base or at the seam between the metal and plastic? If its at the seam you have to replace the whole injector. If its at the base you can just replace the o rings around the base.

As for the shift box, I know they must be a semi common problem as almost everyone has been pulled everytime I go out there. If you mail one back to me I will get it swaped out for you. I bought a warranty on the one at pullapart just in case.

Let me know.

I'll have to look and see if I can tell where they are leaking. BTW Mr. Zone, what's cost on injectors, and for just O-rings, and do you all carry them?

PM me your addy and I will send it back
Thanks

What year 4.0? I remeber reading, i think, JP magazine, and they had a MJ with leaking injectors, a little while later, they had one less 4.0. The injectors in the renix engines are known to leak from the body, and the oring that seals them to the rail or manifold is still good. As for the cheapest place to find good injectors, I've used this guy several times, and his customer service can't be beat: http://www.fuelinjectorconnection.com/shop/index.php?_a=viewCat&catId=4

Give him a call and let him know what you need, even if it's not listed on the webpage.

Injector leaks: Mine was doing the same thing, strong smell of gas while driving and you could see gas seeping out of them. Autozone o-ring kit, $9.00, solved the problem. There are two o-rings on each injector, one at the fuel rail and one at the intake. Be SURE to lube them, I used a small wipe of axle grease, before you try to force them into the intake and fuel rail! It's a fairly easy and painless repair. Take the transmission cable loose at the throttle body bracket, I couldn't get the bracket off the throttle body so I whacked it with a BFH and bent it back so the fuel rail could clear to come out. BFH to put it back in place. Disconnect both fuel lines, probably have to take the bracket that holds the front line off, it's by the vacuum junction block, four bolts holding the fuel rail to the motor, and the whole fuel rail should wiggle out. Replace o-rings, be SURE to lube, and re-install. I managed to damage one of mine upon re-install and was forced to pull the whole thing again. I was able to re-use one of the old o-rings and got it right on the second try :)

As John said, Lube, Lube, and more LUBE!!! I used 10-30, some use vasaline. Just LUBE. I unfortunatly tore one of my new ones, wasn't able to reuse old and bought the only kit in Town. Had to reorder and wait!!!

Good luck!

Glad to see you and John comming over to the "grocery getter wheeler" side!!

Went to look to see where they are leaking, Not at O-rings! Bummer, so, since I have the spare jeep here, I took the fuel rail off it, and gonna see if any of them are good. Zone had the kit, but only had O-rings for the the injectors, I will have to try and re-use the ones for the regulator(new) and for the fuel line(fingers crossed). But this will continue for another day, since I work the next two and little time for anything other than work, travel and sleep,'

BTW not giving up My Big Jeep, this is a go play in the snow, maybe move the trailer, parts go getter, not a trail Jeep. I ain't that old yet!

your tranny not shifting by itself could be the seliniod packs. they say its a problem that dosnt happen much but ive had to fix three xj's in the last two months because of them going out. If you need a set let me know, i have a few used sets from aw4's....there super $$$$ new.

The guy I got the jeep from thought it was the solenoids that were bad in his first trans. He then bought the trans that is in the jeep from one of the members on here. The trans was a known good trans when pulled. I know the guy he got it from and trust that it was good. I read on another board that if you pull the fuse for the trans computer and it shifts manually that its the module that is bad. I would have to beleive this to be a common problem as almost every XJ at pull a part that takes that computer has already had it pulled. Took me almost 6 weeks to find one.

As for the injectors they are 50 a peice at my work. Thats 300 for a set of new ones. Big investment for a 600 dollar rig. I can get you 20% off of those though. Still a lot of cash for a cheap snow rig. I will check to see if I can pull a whole fuel rail at the pick a part when I go to look for another module for you.

As for the tranny, like I said before, I would check to make sure all the electrical connections were put back tight. The trans was just swapped right before I picked it up.

Injectors, ~$125-150 a set of 6, rebuilt with a warranty. see my earlier link

Chip, How many are bad? I should have a couple in the shop. I would go ahead and get the o ring kit too while you have the fuel rail off.

Probably have a couple of spares here too. Are you SURE it's the injector and not the o-rings? That's what I thought I had until I got into it!

when i had my xj. i replaced my injectors with mustang injectors. supposed to be an upgrade, but really didn't notice a difference. 2 of mine were leaking. got 6 mustang injectors shipped to my house for about $120 i think? i just can't remeber what years to use. check naxja.

Do the mustang injectors, orange tops I think, 19 lb/hr. Perfect replacement, and if you know any mustang guys, you could probably score a set for $40 or $50. Mine worked flawless.

I would not replace them with used ones of the same type, as they will leak eventually too. It's a well known problem.

Hold that thought. The XJ parts Jeep I have here is a 89 also, I pulled the fuel rail off of it yesterday. Went and got the O-ring kit, but ran out of time. Only way to see if any of them are good is to hook it all up and see.

Yes, I checked it out, I actually found several sources for around that kinda money.

Four were leaking. I turn on key, not starting it and let the pump , pump, and all of the four leaking were leaking at the seam where the plastic and the metal meet.

Yeah, it's the injectors

Is there a certain year? 6? 6 Cylinder? or do I just look for mustang orange top?
The only reason I am even considering used ones is
1. I have a whole fuel rail from a parts Jeep
2. I have good friends offering me some
3. if they are bad, oh well, I need more practice on these machines, Uncharted territory for me
4. trying not to dump a load into this as it is just another toy for the most part.

On another note, I decided to drive it to work last night. How'd that work out? you ask, NOT TOO GOOD

I got about 10 miles from home and all of a sudden my windshield was covered in coolant! The hose that goes to the water pump, then back to a Y, where it splits off and goes to the heater core, and to the bottom of the reservoir. It busted right at the 90* bend going to the water pump. I tried cutting it off at the hole, and sliding it back over on it. I think this has already been done once, so it was a no go. I called every parts place in Morganton, had a friend call the ones in Marion, No go, it's a dealer item only! So I will call today and see if they have one or can get one and see how much it is. If it's too much I will make one.

oh and something else.
I have found that these Jeeps were not made for comfort. Basically the seat. Mine has dark gray leather seats, electric, in decent shape. I think I am gonna look for a matching color set from a 2 door, so I can recline a little more. Either that, or try and take the back apart from the seat and get a little more recline out of it. But, that's down the road a bit.

On your shift problems. There are different controlers for the transmission. Check and see if they have the same color lables. IIRC there are 4 different controlors in xj autos that are all different.

I am the one that sold him the jeep. I also provided an extra controller. They were both red label on them. I was told there are two different red label boxes though. I dont know for sure because I have never worked on anything but wranglers. I was told by some guys on another forum that there are two different ones though.

I have seen green and yellow label controlers too.

The injectors that work are the cobra mustang injectors 94 and 95. They wont fit the renix intake from understanding though. Those should also only be used if your building a stroker. They will dump a bit too much fuel for stock 4.0
