I know guys with older rigs build most their own stuff. Most JK guys don't, build 90% of the stuff for my junk. Welding is getting better, lol. I'm wondering if some guys from NCKrawlers are still around here. I hung out with a few of them back when I was in highschool most were out if Greenville. I
Doublers aren't useless in the South, and not everything is covered in mud or is wet and slippery. It all depends on where you go and what you're into. The rock bouncer scene has made wheeling in the South seem like high HP and wheel speed are key but you will find most of the guys here build there rigs to crawl, and most places you go gearing means more than motor.
Well I was going to put a 2.72 range box in front of a 4:1 dana 300 for the jeep. But I think a 250is:1 crawl ratio might be a little much. Out here it's great because every thing is dry, barely any soil between rocks. My 4:1 case in the jeep should be fine back there. The k5 might get a 241/205 doubler to keep the weight down and help that crappy low range the 205 has. It's got 4.10 3/4 tons with rear disc, a hydro sm465 swapped in it along with a clocked flat 205. Was a 700r4/208 originally, did that a few years ago. Ive got a few parts sitting in the back of it that I need to put to use. I've got to chase down a burnt up fusible link in the starter wiring, put the new radiator in it, plumb the rear brakes, put the rear drive shaft in it, and I want to prime the engine oil before I turn it over. It ran fine 5 years ago, but it hasn't been started since. Just want to get the k5 back on the road while I build a passenger side drop HP60 and get the doubler together. Like I mentioned earlier I want to build a new frame, 3link front 4 link rear, narrow the body, boat side it. Sink a bunch of time and money in it ya know? Lol

I know Shane got out of it. Brock has a TJ he takes to uwharrie every now and then. Jeff moved onto bigger and better things, and I haven't seen Carter since he closed his machine shop in winterville. I used to work at Hastings with Brock and Shane.
My bank life simply will not allow me to atrophy cash like some people can. Plus I have a greater appreciation of a part I fabricated, even if it is ugly and heavy. Aside from the friendship and commardery of the sport I appreciate the personal journey of creating the rig.

Yep, I know exactly what you mean. I just like it when other JK owners ask me where I bought this and that, and I'm like from the hobart company. They don't get the welder joke at all. Figuring out how to do something or researching the parts or just reengineering a part is half the fun for me. Plus I'm constantly learning how to do this it that. And not to mention all the tools that come along with it. You can never have enough tools.

Many of the guys from NCKrawlers from years back experienced, well, life. Moved away, fell in love, got married, graduated or got put on university sponsored vacations, etc. Shane and Brock are still working at Hastings.
As Jimmy stated, we're still around and meet at Parkers on Memorial Drive 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7pm. Come on out.

Yeah I still keep in contact with Brock via Facebook. He's doing the ATV thing a lot with Laura and his daughter. Shane I think go back into offshore fishing. Haven't seen then since I showed both of them my jeep when I bought it. Brock was pissed about how cheap I got it for, Shane said he missed wheeling lol. It's still a couple months till I head back to NC. Depending on if I get back in the winter or spring I'll be in Greenville for a bit I'm sure.
Well hopefully I'll be back in NC before April. I will probably not be ready for wheeling till may or june. Need to put some new tires on my JK. I'll be doing alot of fab on my k5 after I find house with a 2 car garage to my liking. But I'm looking forward to finding some good places to wheel
