Well I've been the Army, I'm originally from Greenville, NC. Stationed out here at Fort Irwin, CA. Looks like I'll be moving back after I'm out and going to NC State. Gonna miss the wheeling out here. It's great and y'all should all try and make it out here sometime. I've got an '10 2 door rubicon with couple cool things, and a '87 K5 that I haven't touched in 4 years. I know most the trails are muddy out in NC but has anyone found decent rock gardens?

Im from redlands ca

Theres nothing out here close to how cali is, the trails are like the forest service roads in big bear the rocks out here are not as impressive and challenging as johsonvalley they are like some of the rocky mining trails out in the old ghost towns

Nothing close by. Like you have in Cali. But if you are willing to drive. There is Windrock, Rausch creek, West Virginia.

Yeah that's why I'm glad I have the jeep, it's mildly set up. Making a flat belly skid and used a TJ tank to gain the clearance.

The k5 needs a lot of work will probably turn into a truggy. Want to bob it and narrow the whole body, probably will build a new chassis for it. It's will be a project for a few years.

Yeah I know it's depressing lol but since I'm keeping the JK on 35s it shouldn't be bad at all.

Yeah has anyone tried the new tellico area they opened up? Heard it's pretty tame but so was Harlington, Kentucky when it stated up.

Is the flats in Marion for only clubs and events or can you just pay a fee and go wheel/camp?

The Flats is a club playground. A few times a year they have open or benefit rides.

What is your MOS?

11B, yeah I'm trying to get a feel for who I can go play with out there.

Wanna join the Guard? Keep your GI Bill and use FTA and state TA. Go to NCSU tuition free between FTA and STA.

Getting MEB, backs all jacked up. Trust me Id rather be in the Army because I love the job and mentoring the guys under me.

Gotcha. Make sure you take that stuff straight to the VA.

How long have you been in?

Just over 3 years and yeah I'm tracking all that. Kept a copy of everything medically for my back.

Did you convert to post 9/11 GI Bill? How many deployments do you have? Dont just rush thru outprocessing, get what you can. So many people come off AD and 6 months later wish they had spent a little more time on outprocessing / clearing because they missed something just trying to check the boxes and get the F home.

Yeah I've got the post 9/11, O deployments and yeah I've got a few guys guiding me through the whole deal.

Yeah the military really can set you up for success if you use the resources provided.

Welcome home man!! Keep an eye out for any open rides in the upcoming events section, maybe check out a workday at URE and I'm sure you can hook up with some guys that have a club or a riding style that fits you!! Also would you mind marking a waypoint in Cali so offroadcowboy can find his way back since the wheeling sucks soo bad out here!!

Lol it's just a different style, you have an abundance if traction and it's all dry. It's a completely different driving style and there are some bad ass trails out here. I'm not a huge fan of mud, but after I start building my k5 into a truggy with some beefy parts I'll be ok with bumping up muddy ledges. Out here I learned a lot about clearances and suspension set up along with wheelbase to tire size ratio. To think I was talking to a guy about helping me building a doubler for my JK, it would be useless in the south because you need some wheel spin. It's all about wheelbase, gears, and having everything tucked up and out of harms way out here. It's been maybe 10 or 11 years since I've been to uwharrie.

Doublers aren't useless in the South, and not everything is covered in mud or is wet and slippery. It all depends on where you go and what you're into. The rock bouncer scene has made wheeling in the South seem like high HP and wheel speed are key but you will find most of the guys here build there rigs to crawl, and most places you go gearing means more than motor.

since you will be in the Raleigh area you can check out www.cnc4x4.org they are based in Raleigh

Thanks, pretty sure my JK will be seen as a little different from most bolt on wonders out there. Y'all would be amazed at how much the JK community is stuck inside the box about things. It's pretty funny to me.
