bought a 325i last friday, had a broken timing belt when i got it, hoping to drive it tomorrow. when the belt broke it took out all 6 exhaust valves and 3 of my intake valves. spent $180 on valves, $140 on 12 new rocker arms and $170 at the machine shop to get it all put in. here are some pics of the process.
we need to put this

The machine shop fee sounds about right, if they did a valve job, pressure test, and surfaced the head too. $180 sounds steep for the valves, but since it's a Beamer, who knows. Why new rockers, worn? bent or? That Cylinder bore does not look like 230K at all, you may hve lucked up and got one someone already foot the bill for. If they all look that good it's not too much different than a fresh hone job. Just out of curiosity if you have not put it together you might want to check the bore to see if it's oversized(bored). But at any rate, looks like you are well on your way to having it going again. Good luck!

That cyl bore will look the same after half a million miles. We had a guy run an '86 535i 530,000 before the frame rails rusted so bad the engine was ready to fall out of it. He had us take the engine out and send the car to a body shop to have new frame rails put in and while the car was at the body shop, he had us reseal the engine. (Had some serious sepage) and it was a grease ball, but when we pulled the head off, the crosshatch looked like new. The guy bought it new at Leith and every oil change was done there! The file was so thick we had to purge all but the last 200k and it was still 4 in thick. They aren't called Bavarian MOTOR Works for nuthin'. (Or does that stand for Break My Wallet) judgeing on the price of those valves. :D Seriously, though great find. That will be a great DD. (Fun to drive too.)

Ask a German from Bavaria, they'll tell you BMW = Bayern Mist Wagen (translated - german shit car)

I loved all my Bimmer's I had overseas... awesome overall package..

how much for that trooper ;)

no chip, thats the original hone job, its not uncommon on BMW's. this is my 6th or 7th head job this summer and all of them have still had a perfect bore, and 2 of them have been 350k motors. they just know how to build their over there. the head was pressure tested, new valves and valve stem seals put in, new rockers installed and eccentrics transferred (our parts supplier dosent give us hardware with new rockers), and it was resurfaced. BMW's are notorious for breaking rockers when you wail on the motor after 200k, i just wanted to be safe and replace all 12. it hurt buying all that though, intake valves are $13 each, exhaust are $22, and rockers are $12 each. thank god the cam wasnt worn down, that would be another 300 for a 280 degree cam

oh and the trooper...600. it needs gas lines and misc intake parts put back on

You dont have to lie pal, we all know that cross hatch pattern is from the ridge reamer you used to clean up the bore....ANY chevy block would look the same after 300,000 miles,no doubt in my mind.Imports suck......

Chevys MAKE it to 300k? Oh You mean just 300. :flipoff2:

Yep thats why everyone takes their 22r's and 4.0's and swap em for 4.3's and 5.7's!!!!!Because it makes no sense to put a 325 or 318 bmw motor in anything.
Oh yeah but we arent talking about motor swaps were just talking about how bad imports suck......they are :gay:
one more thing....have a nice day! :flipoff2:

If imports suck so much, then tell me why Chevy's cars have Toyota stamps all over their parts, Ford and Mazda are pretty much interchangable, and Dodge and Mitsubishi have been in bed together for YEARS! Why isn't there a single "American Made" car anymore? Hell, BMW's and Toyotas are more American Made than Chevy's and Fords!!! Hey, Ford can't buy enough foreign car companies!

The reason they all have some foreign parts on em is so that people like you that love imports will buy these thinking that "well its actually a toyota".......
The only good foreign car ever made was the Diahatsu..........by the way imports suck again.......have a nice day! :flipoff2:

HEEYYYYY... I'll have you know my 1988 Chevy S10 had over 200K (actually, closer to 250K) on it and still running OK until one of the cylinders finally gave up the ghost LAST OCTOBER. That's one of the reasons I "traded up" to the 1990 S15 Jimmy. If not for that, I'd STILL be driving the S10! :p

Exactly my point.....a domestic motor will keep up with an import motor any day of the week......imports suck...... :flipoff2:

I owned a ford once... found out I wasn't that good a mechanic. Note, there is a difference between mechanic and technician. Mechanics are grease monkees that work on domestics, and technicians are highly trained people who work on imports. Oh and BB, Domestics SUCK! :flipoff2:

Well it a good thing Im an aircraft TECHNICIAN then.......oh and at the moment Im working on an Import aircraft and guess what??????even import airplanes SUCK!!!!!!!! :gay: :gay: :gay:
anyhting import sucks hind teet! :gay: :gay:

yeah. it's a good thing vehicles are COMPLETELY made up of parts from their country of origin, as well as always designed and manufactured there.

it's a null and void argument... there's no such thing as a domestic anymore, and hasn't been for quite some time. foreign automakers have consistently produced superior products in many areas over the past 2+ decades, and US companys have done the smart thing to implement some of their technology/engineering.
