NASA’s Voyager 2 probe has entered interstellar space

Ray guns from space is what we’re trying to achieve I’m pretty sure, but I have a tinfoil hat on while I type this...

It has a gold disc with a diagram of earth and the shape of a human plus music and sounds of earth Incase anything out in the beyond intercepts the voyager. Fascinating and creepy at the same time.

Both spacecraft are still technically within the solar system, however. And they will be until they exit the Oort Cloud, a large collection of distant objects that are still affected by the sun's gravity. While it's not known how wide the Oort Cloud really is, scientists estimate that it will take around 300 years for Voyager 2 to reach the inner edge and maybe 30,000 years to exit the outer edge.

Wow.

Loved when I read that. Also read that the disc contains a greeting in various languages and that the disc is supposed to be able survive a billion years or something crazy like that.

I enjoy reports from space. I get sick of reading/seeing stuff about politics and reality show BS. This is stuff with no slant. Just cool facts about what we're trying to do out there. Thanks.

I love this stuff. Our idea of far away is not really far at all when you can out. Plus the brains that goes into something like this is amazing.

Take the insight Mars lander. That stuff is amazing. It was launched. Took a hot lap around the earth because of trajectory stuff and then after a few cosmic space farts slowed from 13k mph to land within a mile of the bulls eye at 5 mph. And today I listened to a YouTube sound bite of Martian wind. Just amazing.

Now the Chinese are landing on the dark side of the moon for the first time.

Why haven't we been back to the moon?

Lack of budget, and more importantly, lack of any really good reason to go back. We BTDT 50 years ago. Moon is small potatoes, Mars is where it's at.

All hail V-ger

Lets ask Steph Curry
I'm disappointed it took so long for this to come up.

Yeah, it's pretty freaking amazing. This is a satellite launches before I was born, based on technology from a day when simple transistors had barely been invented, and the circuit technology was less sophisticated than what most of us have running our old beater-ass trucks. A whole bunch of smart guys figured out how to not only get that thing out into space, and predict where it would go, but also outfit it to be able to last longer than our species is going to be around. It just goes to show what humans can actually pull off when given sufficient resources, motivation and support.

I find the Golden Record thing to be quite hilarious in a self-centered kind of way. They included sounds of all parts of earth and humanity, which are totally meaningless unless you have the experience to know WTF they are. And more importantly the probability of any alien life form bein gable to recognize sound/compression waves in the same frequency as us is pretty much zilch.
IMO the best part of the Golden Record has nothing to do with aliens, but actually a very interesting study in what one group's notion of what symbolizes our planet and humanity.

Heck, we still got untranslated runes from prior civilizations.. of course, the other species present in the universe are probably more skilled/learned/adept at translating, communication & technology than we could possibly be in the foreseeable future. (Oops, did I let that conspiracy out? One theory is they've been here, interfered, accelerated our tech, but we weren't ready and it's all being kept under wraps, and further than that... Maybe "they" won't come and find me and eradicate my existence for exposing them.. oh and they are ETs, but fallen and heavenly angels. I could go on as to how/why but that would be better off in garage as it's conspiracy/religion. </tinfoilhat>)

And dick pics. Dont forget we sent the aliens dick pics.

And if we sent one today, we'd also have to send a frozen teenager looking at their phone so they could understand the format (everyone know aliens used 8-track and not records :shaking:)

I'm old enough to remember that o_O

Sad that the Start trek reference was what first came to mind too...wondered how many would actually catch that reference. Guess there's not enough OLD nerds on here (yet)

And while I wear my tin foil pretty dang tight....I'm not a subscriber...even though Capricorn One is one of my all time favorite movies

Was reading about the radio waves that voyager 2 is sending out and I wondered how in the hell could an object 11 billion miles away send a signal and us being able to receive it...and it turns out, radio waves go on forever, although they get weaker the further they go out, but still pretty amazing. and the RTG power supply that powers these things is pretty incredible as well.
To me, its unfathomable to think about what is really out there. I go back and forth about there being other life somewhere other than earth and not aliens but some small organism that is slowly evolving.

Wow.
$5 says that if we, the human race, don’t kill ourselves and somehow find a way to achieve space travel at decent speeds, we end up being the ones to “find” voyager. Just a really expensive time capsule.

The first radio waves of any power that earth has produced has now reached the known closest planets. They are probably like wtf!

Oh, and I forgot to mention the drake equation.
It was based on info available when it was conceived, but modern planet detection says it has underestimated the amount of habitable planets expenteninaly.

Hard for me to believe that Voyager 1 and 2 have lasted so long. Was reading that Voyager 2 (I think) should keep working till around 2025. Amazing at the distance these things have traveled yet when you realize how far away our closest star is (4.3 light years away) seems like a short trip in comparison.
