Who all has been out on fort fisher or freeman park? I plan on takin my YJ down this (when i get the guts) summer and id like some feedback and perhaps some pics of your rig out on the beach!:driver:

What weekend you planning on going? I plan on going about every other weekend. Its a blast. What do you want to know? I have the season passes for both ends.

There was a thread on this recently. I go out on Ft Fisher, Freeman Park, and the OBX quite regularly. Lots of fun, good camping where allowed, stay away from dunes (not just because of the law, but sand fleas SUCK). Season pass is definitely worth it, I couldn't believe they bumped it up to $20 a day. Not sure if it's still going on, but if you bought the $20 day ticket, you could go by the office and they would prorate the season pass.

Here's a few pics from the times I went out

I would hit Cape Hatteras or Fort Fisher. The Cape is the best when the bird Nazi's don't have the place closed. If you fish they are the best. The Cape is free Forst Fisher is cheaper then freeman and doen't have all the drunk punks as Freeman does. No drinking on Fort Fisher. I go for fishing that's why I hit those two. Here's pics of my at Hatteras and Fort Fisher.

Another vote for Ft Fisher. It is a lot nicer than the wild scene at Freeman park. You can drive all the way to the end and park next to the sign for Bald Head Island and not see anyone else all day. Watch the tides as some of the thin sections are not passable when it gets really high. You can't drink or camp there but it is a better experience if you want to fish or get away from it all.

Freeman is OK if you need to camp just make sure you go all the way to the end and keep your tent away from the traffic areas. There is traffic there all night so you may not get much sleep. On a holiday weekend its insane but sometimes its fun to watch. Watching the sunrise out of the ocean from your tent is cool.

I have also wheeled the sections just above Hatteras. They are beautiful but don't go alone especially in the off season. If you get stuck you may not see anyone for a long time.

Good Luck.

Bob

Thanks, idk which weekend im going (if i get to go) and i plan on hittin both in the same weekend. But ive been told the 2.5 doesnt have enough torque to go down the beach but ive also heard the first 1/4 mile is the hardest part??? Idk though i really wanna go but it all depends on gas prices and my wallet!!!

I have the 2.5 on 31s and I don't air down. I have pulled several trucks/suvs out on both ends, and a boat off freeman. Wranglers have no problem with over size tires. If you do just drop the air preasure to 15ish and you can ride around in 2wd. I ride around in 2wd just cause I can. May put my boggers on for the next trip so i'll see how well they do.

Well if money is right i will deff be going sometime this summer, and i will try to meet up with some of you. Now i just have to get the guts to trust the heep to go that far!:shaking: And i will have to go down 421 since the top speed i can get to is 55! lol:Rockon:

You cant camp on fort fisher, i think there is others but im gonna stay in the carolina/kure area.

No camping at fort fisher but you can camp on freeman and others. My brother lives in kure so i have a beach house lol. I deff wont be taking 40 on my boggers may take 421 or 220.

First 1/4 mile is definitely the hardest part, it is really soft and churned up. 2.5 has plenty of torque to make it, run it in 4low for the first part atleast.
tire pressure tire pressure!
This is key.

I was able to make it all up and down the OBX, Ft Fisher, and Freeman park in 2wd just fine fully aired up with my 15.5 wide tires, but I noticed significantly less drag on the truck after going from 45psi down to 20psi, it felt like it was gliding on top then rather than plowing tracks through it, this also made a ~20 degree drop on the trans temp gauge on the same day as well. If you have an Auto, that is something you will definitely want to keep an eye on as the drag the sand puts on your drivetrain along with the really slow speed will run the temps up without enough airflow to keep it under control.

I didn't drop the pressure at all for the times I went to Ft Fisher or Freeman park because the beach is so short there, but when I went to Carova, the beach house was 10 miles from the end of the pavement, sand all the way, so it was worth it to me.

It's a little more $$ but you can't beat taking a ferry out to one of the islands, you can camp or rent a cabin, and the only thing for sale is gas and ice. It's a different world out there and way more peaceful, plus idiots won't pay the money so you almost never run into any.
I go to Cape lookout - Great Island or Portsmouth Island.

Negative on Portsmouth. The ferry company DOES NOT have their act together and aren't reliable. Jerk offs forgot about us for 4 hours. Then the guy wanted a tip. From what I could tell, their ferry was in bad shape and their company was in bad shape. Don't really want to trust them...for anything really. Oh and they don't get my business again.

Island wise, as long as you are on the beach, all is well. Otherwise the mosquitoes will DESTROY YOU. I'd slap my arm and kill 15 of em...that bad.

However from what I can tell, Portsmouth is it for fishing. Nothing really else to do and you can get from one end to the other in 30 minutes. IMO, unless you are fishing, you can do a lot more at other places.

I'm gonna head to Fort Fisher this Saturday for a day of fishing. I like Fort Fisher because from Raleigh it's an easy day trip. As for driving on the beach lower tire pressure and you should be fine. The entrance to most beaches is the worst spots as said before. The sand there is soft and deep due to all the traffic. Carry a shovel and a strap or two and if you do get stuck there is always someone willing to help.

Well when i go i'm mainly goin' to just cruise but i plan on doing a lil fishin while im there.

Me and some friends will be camping on the North End of Carolina Beach this weekend.

We both drive F-150s Mines an 86 Red-ish with way to much Chrome and 33's and I think his is an 89 it's Red stepside lifted with 35's

If anyone comes out that way stop by and say hey and have a beer or 2 with us

I just got back from Fort Fisher and as normal fishing sucked cause I was there. Caught a bunch of the baby sharks is all. The sand from the gate all the way down the beach was nasty Saw 3 fools with Dually’s stuck and many others were getting stuck. I guess no one know that you can air down and do amazing things :shaking:

A guy I work with hit a nice run of blues last weekend. I was Gonna fish for sharks but didn't load the kayak this time since time was short. I wish I had because the guy next to me was catching some nice mullet and offered me some. A nice fresh mullet on the shark rig at dusk could have been fun. This time of year does slow down a lot. Just wish I didn’t have to work thru all the good spring fishing this year. I did get to enjoy the show with people having trouble driving. Had a guy in a 1500 Dodge about smoke it. He had that thing overheating so bad they spent an hour cooling it and getting back off the beach.

www.nps.gov/calo/index.htm - This is website that has all the info you need for Cape Lookouts great island.
www.portsmouthislandfishing.com- This is the site for Portsmouth island and has all the info you need.
I will be going again in Sept. to the Great island.

You can drive on the beach on the ocean side and back trails on both Islands, they block off areas for Sea turtles and Birds.
Mid October is a great time to go.
