NC Beaches

Negative on Portsmouth. The ferry company DOES NOT have their act together and aren't reliable. Jerk offs forgot about us for 4 hours. Then the guy wanted a tip. From what I could tell, their ferry was in bad shape and their company was in bad shape. Don't really want to trust them...for anything really. Oh and they don't get my business again.
Island wise, as long as you are on the beach, all is well. Otherwise the mosquitoes will DESTROY YOU. I'd slap my arm and kill 15 of em...that bad.
However from what I can tell, Portsmouth is it for fishing. Nothing really else to do and you can get from one end to the other in 30 minutes. IMO, unless you are fishing, you can do a lot more at other places.
Capt. Rick and his guys are the best, they will go out of their way to help you. I was there 2 months ago and they had one boat down for repairs but thats what you do, boats are not indestructible. They fit as many trucks on as they can and I've never heard a anyone getting ever a little scratch. I've showed up without a reservation and been worked in fast. The Island has a beautiful village with a rich history that you can spend hours enjoying, as for the bugs if you can't handle them stay home and watch Netflix, OFF! is a help but not strong enough, get one with highest %DEET you can.

A guy I work with hit a nice run of blues last weekend. I was Gonna fish for sharks but didn't load the kayak this time since time was short. I wish I had because the guy next to me was catching some nice mullet and offered me some. A nice fresh mullet on the shark rig at dusk could have been fun. This time of year does slow down a lot. Just wish I didn’t have to work thru all the good spring fishing this year. I did get to enjoy the show with people having trouble driving. Had a guy in a 1500 Dodge about smoke it. He had that thing overheating so bad they spent an hour cooling it and getting back off the beach.
You fish for sharks a lot? Idk if it was you but there was a guy out there one day we were fishing and he paddled out and dropped his line. Had to talk to him and see what was fishing for, he said he fishes for shark as a hobbie.

I just do it for fun. Fish for dog fish when they are around and love to yak out a nice bait for a larger shark. Still working on getting all the gear for it so right now all I can handle is stuff up to the 5'-6' range. I've got this thing about just putting out a big cut bait and seeing what will hit it. You never know what will hit depending on the time of year. Drum, Rays, Sharks even Tarpon every now and then. Saw a nice Tarpon caught last year.

Glad someone had a good experience because I didn't! Sounds like they got their act together in the last year and a half. The ferry company that took me out there was

Yes, the town on the island was very historic and the coast guard station was SUPER COOL. My favorite was going all the way to the top where they would lookout for ships in distress.

Their boat room was empty at the time, said that they were going to put reproduction rescue boats in there. That would've been cool.

As for the bugs, even the two people who live out there full time were like, "Yeah, they are 20x worse than they normally are!" Of course my luck, ferry and bug issues . Normally bugs do not bother me but these just drove me up the wall.
