This happened 5 minutes from me. I knew the guy who was killed. We weren't close friends, but still hits too close to home.

Keep our community and his family in your prayers, as well as the NCSHP community.

Thats a shame. I'm sure the dash cam will show exactly what happened. Wonder if they caught the flee'er and if they had anything to do with it?

Pretty sure the dash cam fried in the fire. But they have warrants out for the two people in the 07 beamer that ran.

Listening to the sound clip the ranking officer gave the press, it didn't sound like it.

From what he said, the ranking officer gave pursuit, and Trooper Bullard followed. They got onto 77 and the ranking officer noticed Trooper Bullard was no longer behind him so he gave up pursuit, turned around and came back to see his car in a ball of flames.

Trooper Bullard only had 3 years of service. Armchair quarterbacking here, but it SOUNDS like maybe driver error, or hell maybe some num-null on the hiway panicked and swerved into his lane because of how poorly some idiots handle first responders behind them

You are correct. The suspects were not involved in the wreck. The senior officer realized Bullard was no longer in sight and went back to find his cruiser engulfed in flames.

Nothing has been officially said yet, but it's been said he may have had a tire blowout. But who knows. I don't know how they could tell that from a burned out vehicle.

All we know for sure is that it was a single vehicle wreck.

I've had 4 tires go down on that stretch of road, so I could see losing a tire being a possibility.

That's a shame.

And they likely wouldn't draw that conclusion from the vehicle, but rather the skid marks suggesting attitude of the car, rim scrapes in the pavement, etc.

I heard about this while in Wilksboro. It is a shame but I fear it was operator error.

Young overzealous and a crash. It occurs right where he pulled out to pursue from what I was told.
He was engaged to be married in August.

Could be operator error, but it wasn't where he pulled out at.

The more I look at it, the more operator error seems likely.

Yea, they have em both in custody.

UPDATE: They have put Whitt in jail with no bond and he "has been charged as a capitol offender". From my understanding, they are letting the girl go as she was trying to exit the car and get him to slow down.

My views on the murder charge aside, can you imagine what the guy driving the BMW thought he went from "whew, I got away, certainly dodged that one, I wonder why they stopped chasing me, oh doesn't matter I got away" to when he heard the officer died and he is now wanted for murder...

Also, I feel sorry for the passenger, a murder charge being in the car when the dumb kid decided to run, it is not like she could have bailed out of a speeding car. I get the law states you can be charged with a felony if you are with someone when they are intending to commit a felony (i.e. you are the driver of a get away car), but this seems a little harsh for her.

Did he purposely run the cop off the road or something?

I have heard that this may be the case, but I didn’t get that from the internet so I cannot be sure that it is true.

That’s actually very similar to what I was told, except for one major detail....

@strange1 Edited: After listening more carefully, Bullard may have been the lead car.
<Disregard previous incorrect statement about Bullard not being lead>

While I was listening I was trying to determine if they meant lead as in the first car, or lead as in ranking officer. It doesn’t make sense to me that the lead (car in front) made it almost 10 miles down the road before he realized Bullard wasn’t behind him. But his comment about traffic and evasive action leads me to believe that Bullard swerved to avoid an innocent motorists. I drive by the crash site daily on my way to work, its hard to imagine a blowout causing it due to the absolute lack of evidence leading up the bridge support. Although partially out of control, he drove cleanly behind a guardrail to avoid something.

I’m glad it’s not available to be released, but I would like to know what was said during that phone call mentioned at the end.

Bullard was a great guy, always had a smile. I worked many of wreck calls with him. We lost a young man who had a bright future ahead of him. In my 19 years in the fire service he was the 1st and only Trooper that has ever helped me clean debris from a roadway after a wreck.
