Need a new matress

So I guess it's time to start shopping for a new mattress. Any advice on what kind of mattress to get and the best place to get one? Not trying to spend $1,000 either. Thanks in advance.

I took a chance on a Purple mattress and have been very pleased. It feels kinda wierd at first but by the second night I was sold. I was a little worried about buying a bed in a box without trying one out but we have a queen bed in the spare bedroom if it sucked. I don't think $1000 is bad for something that should last 10 years and make a very big impact on your life.

We bought a coil spring mattress from Ikea a few years ago. I'd do it again.

Several years ago we invested about $1000 in a mattress thinking it would be exponentially better and last at LEAST the claimed 8 years. We were wrong.

Now, we just buy cheaper ones more frequently.

Also....Where we live, there is just this massive lack of places to shop for a mattress

We have some hippy dippy mattress that the wife ordered. I think it's a Casper, but i don't remember. It sleeps fine. My input is not useful, because to me, a hardwood floor sleeps fine too. As would a huge bag of marshmallows.

We got one a couple years ago from the original mattress company. Only 1 brand so it doesn’t get confusing. We are happy with the one we got.

I've been doing a little Amazon browsing and there are a lot of the bed in a box mattresses. Lots of mixed reviews though.

We bought a new matress a year ago.

Bought a bed in a box from Brooklyn Bedding. The name is kinda corny #bestmattresever - yes the hashtag is in the name of the mattress.

Same bed in a box guarantee as all the others. But what sold me on it was that it is a firmer blend (more latex) so if you are a bigger dude it provides more support.

A year later and its still pretty awesome.

I’ve bought 2 mattresses from Ollie’s in Mooresville...one king and one queen. Both coil sprung with pillow top. Pretty sure they were both under $350/ea. Then went to Kohl’s and bought a 4” thick memory foam/cooling pad for each. Regular price is like $600...but they have sales on them for like $200 all the time. Most comfortable bed(s) I’ve ever slept on. Been using them for 4 years or so now.

We got a Casper a few years ago, they were on sale, don't remember the price but at the time it was a good deal.
Kinda odd (and super convenient) for your queen mattress to show up in what seems like an oddly small box that you can just pick up and carry through the house. Unboxing was pretty entertaining.
We're happy with it. It was a little more firm than we liked, so they gave us a free topper for it.

I wouldn't say it changed our lives but we've ben pretty happy with it.

BTW, I misread the title of this thread as "looking for a new mistress". Was woefully disappointed.

FWIW I work with this ultra frugal dude. Like coupon clipping, cheap ass hotel staying free water and extra lemons pinch every penny dude.

He is somewhere around year 2.5 of not paying for a mattress. Says he has never lied to any of the bed in a box guys, but a week before the trial is up he calls and "its just not comfortable" . Says he has like 4 more to go before they start with the wife's name.

Thats cool and all, but what do you do when you actually find one you really like?

What do they do with the returns? I recall some saying they will arrange for the mattresses to be donated if you arent satisfied. My king size Purple was over 100 pounds and came in a big duffle bag. There is no way in hell I could box it up and ship it back. The pillows are 10-15 pounds each!

That sounds like a bigger pain in the ass than it’s worth to me. Even if you get it delivered, still have to have someone home for it to be delivered, so time off work or doing something else. Then the time talking to get one ordered and returned. Plus any time he actually has to spend in a store. The $300 at a discount outlet is far cheaper than the opportunity cost of a ‘free’ mattress.

Edit...and a lot of times don’t those ‘deals’ go by address and not name???

It was a little over a year ago when we were shopping when he told the story. But IIRC some send salvation army to pick them up, at least one just told him to throw it away. And he moved it to his beach house.

He can work from home whenever he wants so no big deal there.
No visit to stores, order and return online.

Seemed like a huge PITA to me as well. I wouldnt do it for sure. But I cant explain how cheap this dude is, and he makes hella coin to boot. He drives a ~10 year old Hyundai with north of 220k miles.

I'm just kinda worried about ordering one online and not liking it. Then having to go through all the trouble of shipping the damn thing back or whatever I have to do to get rid of it and get another one.

This is the thing I find funny, makes me really wonder what the profit margins are on these things.
If they are offering a free trial, and your "return" is just to get rid of it (you donating it is just as "gone" to the company as if you put it in the trash can), and we all know even if you did return it, they can't resell it due to health concerns... that means they are losing the income on a crap ton of mattresses.
Of course I guess if that comes at the trade of not having a retail store anywhere, then operating expenses balance out?

Ive heard that mattresses have the highest mark up next to Jewelry in the world.
Ive heard estimates of a King Mattress having less than $40 of material hard costs.

Google says this. I assume it’s like health care...but instead of offsetting those without coverage, it’s offsetting those ‘free’ offers. They’re getting their money regardless. 900% might be the margin on one sale, but leveled out among all the discarded mattresses, might drop it to that 40-50% range.

They way I understand it is they arrange the donation so they get the write-off. We did buy a couch on wayfair that was damaged on delivery. I sent some pictures, they sent me a new couch. Said I could do whatever I wanted with the damaged one. I imagine with the couch they have some kind of shipping insurance so that makes sense. @Ron is probably right, though. There isnt much to a mattress.

MIL used to work for Foamex in Huntersville.
They made and supplied foam for many name brand mattress companies. They could buy X mattresses per year on program.
I bought a Queen set from her (That I replaced when I bought the aforementioned last year) in 2000. I think we paid $75. Maybe $50, but I think $75. Anyway when I picked it up, it had a Seally Tag on it that said it retailed for $2700. Now Im sure no one (or practically no one) really pays $2,700 and I am also sure they didnt lose any money in selling her the mattress.
