Whats up guys I have a XJ that I will be building this winter. I just picked up a 14 bolt last night for 175. I have a few questions Whats the bolt pattern and best place to pick up wheels who sells them? We are wanting to run 37-40 inch tires But if we run a tire that size will we need to cut the bottom of the housing? Now I haven't started to look for a front axle yet what will be my best options and what will work good with the 14 bolt?

Welcome to the world of build!
The bolt pattern of your 14 bolt will be either 6 on 5.5 or 8 on 6.5
Cut or shaving is very recomended for the 14 bolt, you can actually get a kit now that will allow you to cut the bottom, loosing some bolts and giving you a lot more clearance under the housing. It requires some good cutting, and welding, as well as replacing the ring gear and or having yours milled down. I recomend letting a profesional do this.
If you are going to use your current set up of Tranny and T case, you need to find a Dana 60 from a Ford ton truck. Drivers side drop)

Thanks man I cant wait, yea I found the kit that you just weld on there from TMR which I will prob get. Yes I will still be using the 4.0 and tranny and tcase. My next question Should I just weld it up to save some money instead of doing a locker? Cause if I am not mistaking these are strong as can be in stock form. Now will the 60 have the same bolt pattern or not? Also where do yall buy yalls wheels from?

Depends on the year ford switched to the metric pattern in the 2000ish range. The 14 bolt will be fine welded. Wheels can be bought at a few places, depending on what you want depends on where you buy it.

That's what I have to lookup now and see when ford switched.

I want to say when the new body style came out is when they went to metric pattern.

that year should be a unit bearing set up, not the most popular. Dynatrac makes a kit to convert, but kinda pricey.
That one will also be a metric pattern. Not a big deal, just could not rotate tires, and to actually have a spare, you'd need two, one for each pattern.
For simplicity sake, I would hold out for an older version of the Ford Dana 60, with standard pattern.

Welding the 14 bolt will be fine, if done right.
I do recommend a locker for the front. I have seen the cheaper lunch box lockers hold up fine in a 60.

Man y'all are awesome!! Upnover you posted exactly what I was looking for which was just to wait. Cause I was actually thinking I have to find the same bolt pattern if not I will have 2 spares and that won't work lol. What years do I need to look for? Should the bolt pattern be the same on the old 60s as my 14?

Not sure when they went to the unit bearing and the metric pattern. But yes, the older standard pattern dana 60 will be the same lug pattern as your 14 bolt. I would look for a 60 that has the same gearing as your 14 bolt, it's most likely a 4.10 or 4.56:1 ratio.

If you look in the for sell section there's been a few older ford 60s. Be sure to upgrade to 35 spline outers and you should be bullet proof for the tire size your wanting to run

Ok cool yea I will be looking to pick u the front here in a few weeks. I need to check the gear ratio on the 14 bolt that way I will match. So all I will need to do to the front is outers and a locker and maybe gears? What wheels are you guys running? I like the look and of course the function of beadlocks but they are high and my budget won't allow that lol.

budget you don't need no stinking budget!!! eating is really over rated these days!!

Hahah maybe I should look into your idea lol. My eating has been crazy here lately. Hell if I cut out breakfast and lunch I should save 50 a week lol. So far I am happy with what I have spent so far.

The term budget is for those people who care how much they spend. In this sport you can not care how much you spend.

Hahah very true hey Cliff here's my brothers jeep as of yesterday after he got ahold of it with a sawzaw lol

Your 14 bolt will most likely have 3.73 or 4.10 gears, but could possibly have 4.56 gears. You are probably going to want to run 4.88, 5.13, or 5.38 gears with 37-40" tires on that XJ.

The most bang for the buck with the 14 bolt housing is just to grind/cut the big lip off the bottom so that the bottom of the housing is smooth. You can take it to the next level by actually cutting a large chunk off the bottom and having the ring gear turned down to use with one of those kits, but I'd skip that initially during your build and just grind the bottom smooth.

Most older Ford D60's that you are going to want are going to be either 3.55 or 4.10 gears. I'd weld the rear and run a lock right in the front unless you plan on driving it on the street regularly, then I would put a detroit in the rear. Upgrade the outer shafts to 35 spline units especially if running 40" tires.

You can buy cheap steel wheels from several places including 4wheelparts. If you go with 15" wheels, you will need to get a set with 2.5-2.75" back spacing to clear the brakes. You may still need to grind the calipers and mounting brackets some. Recentered H1 wheels are the best bang for the buck in my opinion. Frequently there are sets for sale on this site.
