So my buddy has a a tag along trailer at the pawn shop. He bought it cheap and I can get it cheap.

It's a home built unit and has never been tagged or titled. It has no vin numbers either. Its not a car trailer, and will be used for hauling materials, trash and scrap floors.

What do I need to do to get it titled?

ole boy he bought it from, said he never had any problems pulling it without a tag...?
I think I need a tag, right?

Go to the tag office, they will issue a VIN # and paper work for the highway patrol, you stamp the # on the tongue and axle and then have a highway patrol office inspect it. Then take the paperwork back to the tag office. Then they will get you a tag and send for the title.

At least that's what I had to do when I got my trailer. It was a new T&W from Hudson NC

Just take the tag off of your other trailer.

This.

I took it down to the high way patrol office and got an officer to inspect it.

I think any officer can inspect it.

I don't really remember. But I did get a permanent tag. It will save you the money after 2 renewals. The only down side is you can't transfer it.

You go to tag office tell them you built trailer & for $5 they will give you vin # to stamp on axle & tongue then you take it dmv to get trooper to inspect it...now you have title!!

The $5 fee is for the notary ..the paper is free . I had $75 in everything last week .that's including tax, title, notary, tag !!!!

Out of curiosity does the size of the trailer matter? Say a trailer with tandem 8lug axles? Or is that more involved

Yeah, if I remember right they asked me how many axles the trailer was, the width, and what it was for (car, equipment, that sort of thing).

Yes size matters (insert joke here) but to give you an example of value for home built vs manufacturer. I have a 2003 Kraftsman 16' car trailer and used to have a T & W 28' gooseneck. When you order from T&W he tells you to go to the tag office and get the paperwork for a homebuilt trailer and bring it to him when you pick up your trailer. He stamps the number on the tongue and you stop by the Highway Patrol on the way home to get it inspected free of charge then proceed to get your tag and title.

I say all that to say this...the taxes on my 2003 16' Kraftsman were higher ($5 and some change) than the taxes on my 2012"home built" (T&W) 28' gooseneck ($2 and some change).

Crap, T&W doesn't stamp it and issue a VIN? I just ordered one from them and being a manufacturer, I assumed it was a given that I'd get a title with it.

Nope. If he did then he would have to pay taxes on the completed unsold trailers, as well as apply for vin #'s and get the inspections. At least that's what he told me. Said that's one of the reasons he was able to sell trailers for a good price.

Trust me...this route saves you money in the short term and the long term.

Dylan tell them its home built, then they will ask you what its worth! I built a small one years ago, got the paper work, numbers, stamped it, and got it inspected. When asked its value I had no idea. I told her it was built by me and my grand dads and we had like 75 dollars in it. Most of it was leftovers laying around both places. We settle on something like a 250 dollar value. I snickered to myself and was on my way.
