Wondering if anyone has any experience with assigning a new title to a title-less bike in NC?

I'm in the market for a dual sport XR/DR650, but used dual sport prices aren't far off from new bike prices, which is nothing I want to get near. Thus I'm looking at any Japanese make 600ccs and up project or otherwise with decent parts availability and aftermarket support; age is but a number and my hands are consistently dirty. It took restraint looking at marketplace, but in effort not to start a criminal record for a stolen bike or ruin my financial future even further I figured I'd do some reading up on the titling process and ask around.

long thread on ADVRIDER forum about getting an 'untitled' vehicle titled in Vermont then registering it in your home state with new title

Anyone have any experience with this themselves? I stumbled upon this method in my search but it almost seemed to good to be true prior to any reading into it.

I don't personally have any experience with this, however I have heard that NC DMV is starting to recall titles that have been issued for bikes that were titled/registered in Vermont then transferred into NC. Buddy of mine did this process with a nice XR400 and last I heard was dealing with NC DMV because they sent him a letter asking him to turn in his NC title and license plate. Been several months since I last talked to him though so not sure how it ended up.

More to the story?

I believe the vt out of state title thing is for 300cc and under. Its not that hard to get a bonded title here in nc, call your local dmv inspector. As long as you're sure it's not stolen.

At the price used bikes are now, just go buy a new xr650. Not a piece of shit and comes with a tag.

Not sure if my logic is flawed or not but..... I'm going to be putting money into it new or used so I might as well start with something cheaper and make it what I want. I wouldn't have the guilt of wasting money on something that was fine off the lot, and I wouldn't pay or finance a bike that could cover one of three student loans.

I'm fairly certain I could get a used bike from the 80s or 90s running and dialed in (modifications/restoration) for less than a new dual sport would cost. The older the better for insurance, property taxes, and registration.
