New Truck Advise - Too many options

I am beginning to look for a new truck to replace my 2001 Yukon with 200k on it, and looking for something most likely in the next 6 months. I had a Silverado before the yukon and really miss having a truck and the versatile of the truck.

  • Ideally want a crew cab
  • Ability to tow a TJ
    • Wouldn't mind the ability in the future to be able to tow a larger trailer with a pop camper on it and the TJ behind it (but that likely won't happen anytime in the near future, so not basing it off that)
  • 4WD is probably a must so there isn't the rig getting stuck towing the TJ
  • It is kind of a DD, but I also have a Jeep, motorcycle, and another car that I can DD, so mileage isn't the most important thing to me
  • Ideal budget is 20K, but would stretch to 25k for something perfect.

What would you all recommend? I would love a diesel but I don't really need one, but at the same point the new 1500 trucks are so expensive used that a 2500 sometimes isn't a bad deal at all. I have looked a decent amount at Tundra's also. Any opinions, brands, etc? I am not brand loyal at all.
 
You know I'm a toyota man love my tundra but it is limited being 1500

Yeah, that is why I was asking about it the other night. I really don't think I'll be towing more than the TJ for a long time and in the long run the tundra might be cheaper


Really want something with less miles on it then that, but not a bad deal, however I am not ready to pull the trigger on something quite yet though.
 
Honestly I would go with a 2500 Silverado gasser with the 6.0 in it. It'll tow anything you want, be cheaper than a HD diesel, and get better gas mileage than a Tundra under any circumstances. I have nothing against Ford trucks, but I wouldn't own one that wasn't a diesel. I will say that I am biased because I own a bunch of Chevy trucks though. :lol:

My old 2500 Silverado with the 6.0 was great at towing, barely knew it was towing. I DD'd it for a while too and the gas mileage wasn't horrible. My brother in law has an 08 Tundra and it tows ok, but the gas mileage is terrible when he tows. We once towed a Camaro and a motorcycle home. I was pulling the Camaro on a flatbed behind my Silverado and he was pulling a Harley on a trailer behind his. He got like 8-10mpg and I got like 16. Felt like we were always filling up his tank on that trip. :lol:
 
Another vote for Tundra. Mine has 152xxx miles on it. Pulls my full body yota pickup to Harlan very well. Most newer 1/2 ton trucks will do what you want for now. As for the bigger trailer, I wouldnt hesitate to pull it with my Tundra as long as the trailer has good brakes. I have pulled 8k with mine.
 
I got 13.5 pulling this to tellico 2 weeks ago I get 18 on the highway empty and 13 in the city empty if you drive like you have a softball under your pedal I have gotten 15 city and 20 hwy

I'm holding off til someone gets some common sense and takes a Ford superduty chassis and cab, puts a Dodge interior in it and swaps in a Duramax/Allison. Until then I'm just saving pennies.

Having owned several of the "big three", its hard to beat the durability of GM drivetrains, the ride comfort of Daimler Chrysler and the Axle strength of good ole Ford.

just picked this up a few months ago. 6.0 gasser, 4l80 towing package with break controller, 2wd with factory Detroit. Pulls excellent for a gas engine truck. Paid 21k for it with 22,000 miles. Just my opinion, you can't beat it for the money. Towed to Harlan last weekend, holds 55 on every hill.

Nice deal, unfortunately a single cab doesn't have enough storage for me, and I would be a little worried not having 4wd. I would want at a min an extended cab.
 
The bare bones work trucks are out there in whatever configuration you want. You save a ton of money not paying for all the frilly options. I don't daily drive mine and its only job is to haul my Jeep once or twice a month, so I was fine with vynil floors and power nothing.

Closest I could find to the perfect truck was a LBZ Duramax:) It's got some squeaks for an '06 but it's a quiet motor, reliable, and holds its value better than any of them.

I'm getting 16.2 mpg in my 4x4 running B100
 
I know where there is a pretty nice 99 F350 SRW, but it's a reg cab. 7.3 truck too.
 
If that's a "damn good deal", then my truck is worth more than I paid for it 7 years and 80k miles ago. :flipoff2:
Compared to the other stuff out there they seem to be deals at least. Truck prices are stupid. I wish I would have kept my Silverado or got a new truck a while ago
 
Are you ever going to pull more than a single car trailer? If no, then a 5-7 year old gasser will tow just as good as a diesel. Everything about a gasser is cheaper than a diesel.. purchase cost, maintenance costs, fuel costs...


Diesel truck prices are crazy.. if people are really getting $20k for 12 year old trucks then its time to dump mine.
 
IMHO this is not the greatest time to go buying a truck. Everything is horribly overvalued and will probably stay this way for a bit. Unless you have the disposable income to pay cash, I would be hard pressed to buy a newer truck in this market simply because I would be afraid of the market tanking and finding yourself upside down in a truck in a year or two. Its a depreciable asset, so if you own it outright, it makes the loss a little easier to swallow if you had to unload it for any reason. Just my opinion though since I have only had one vehicle financed (of the 9 I have owned since I was 16) and I ended up making money on it after 10 months (a clean, low mile 05 CTS-V).

That said, I bought my 99 Cummins 3500 in January from a friend ONLY because I knew it's history, what was done to it and what it needed. The price was beyond fair and he could have gotten considerably more out of it by fixing a few small issues and selling it to some coal rolling high schooler. You can find the deals out there, but they do not last long usually.

IF I was in the market for a truck for what you are using it for, based on the fact you have other vehicles to drive and the truck won't be your primary, I would be looking at 2500/250 6.0, 8.1 Chevy's or V10 Ford's. You will get a newer truck for less money and lower maintenance costs.
 
People can ask what they want, that doesn't mean they are selling. There are deals to be found, you just have to be patient and be ready to jump on them.

After owning gas trucks and diesel trucks, I'll never go back to a gasser. The fuel cost is lower on a diesel, and significantly lower if you're towing. Oil changes cost twice as much, but you do them half as often, so I consider that a win, as I'm under the truck half as often, and spending the same money. If you take care of it and don't treat it like crap, they will last a lot longer than a gasser. Plus, depreciation is pretty flat, so if you keep it for 5 years, it will be worth about the same as when you bought it.

And most importantly, in a gas truck, you can't roll coal :flipoff2:

my 6.0 gets 10mpg loaded or unloaded. its a 2000 with 109k on it. whats the trick?
 
Damn...I get a consistent 14mpg out of mine and it's pushing 37s. As with any motor, let it breathe! Cooler/more air in and more air out. Make sure it's got a clean fuel filter and good plugs and wires. Delco or NGK plugs, preferably. A good tune wouldn't hurt either.
