The 5spd is self contained, you dont need any kind of cooler. It would be more reliable for towing.
The manual will be more reliable but doesn't have the payload that that auto has. The Pathfinder(wd21 style) was a very good little truck. I have personally owned four of them, one 2 door, two 4 doors and a 2000 model. The only one I was not happy with was the 2000 model. It was a unibody and seemed to be cheaply made.
At 260k as long as the maintenance was done I wouldn't see any problem with it running another 100k+ especially if maintained properly. If you think about it the truck is about 21-22 years old, the miles are actually about dead on for a truck that old. The only thing about the VG30 motors that I didn't like is that they need the timing redone at 60k, seemed pretty frequent for as much as I drive.
Keep checking craigslist, there will be more on there. I see them frequently for less that 2500 but they may not be in as good as shape.
