I live in a non-emission testing county. Does anyone, who can relate, know if the parking brake is tested during a standard inspection? 1985 F-150, and all the parts are in place (some are even new), but the rear cables are frozen. This is the only thing holding me up from putting the truck on the road.

I figured as much; I'll get them ordered today. Thanks.

You can probably get em cheap and soon from Advance Auto if you use one of the coupon codes for ~30% off.

Have you tried shooting the cables with WD 40 or PB Blaster to get them freed up? A heck of a lot easier and cheaper. Even a whole can is cheaper than one cable. Let the stuff soak in and try to move the cable. Even if it moves a little, soak again and try again.

My 79 has had an inoperable parking brake for the last 8 years...it passes inspection every year. Horn and lights is basically all that gets checked. Maybe I'm dealing with a shadier and seedier place than I thought...but they have turned me away for tint before.

What county are you in? A 79 shouldn't need an inspection anymore. My 78 hasn't been inspected in a few years.

Rowan. Maybe there's an exemption I don't know about and need to fill out. In order to get it registered, I have to get it inspected.

I'm pretty sure any vehicle 35&+ years old is exempt. I'm not 100% if that's state wide but I think it is. It usually says on the registration when the inspection expires. If its blank you just pay the tags. Should have automatically switched over if your still having to get one you may want to ask DMV.

Otherwise your inspector is shadier than you thought, LOL

If 35 years is factual...it expires in August of this year. So this would be the first full year over 35...I think.

I was told it was 35 AND older not older than 35 by my boss who is the inspector at our shop so you should have been good last year too assuming he isn't wrong himself. Its been about 3 years since my 78 was inspected if I remember right though.

It may be two... LOL. Either way you should be clear now regardless

Terry gave me a copy of the original letter from John Robinson (Dir. NCDMV), when it went into effect Oct.1, 2004.
And it's states:
"any motor vehicle registered in the State of NC that is at least thirty five (35) years old measured from the date of manufacture, shall not be subject to an annual safety inspection."... with no other conditions needing to be met.

My Commando hasn't been inspected since 2005 or 2007 "officially" ;)

Mine hasn't been since 2013 it was three years cause it expires in March. My 67 Fairlane hasn't been inspected since 2004

A side note for those in emission checking counties. Add of April 1 any vehicle less than three years old and less than 70k miles only needs safety inspection.

The inspection is the gate for NC DMV to unlock the registration for the vehicle. Over 35 years you can simply go online and renew the registration. Under 35 years it needs the inspection to unlock the registration. My '69 Blazer has never been inspected in NC (I moved it here when it was 37).

Bringing this one back...so this showed up in the mail today. Do I just call the DMV and tell them it's a 79 and I don't have to have it inspected???
