Of no real benefit to society

As for why pros make millions and plumber joe doesn't, Joe only fixes one pipe at a time, celebrities entertain millions at one time. If joe can figure out how to fix a million pipes in 3hrs I'm sure he will be rich too. quote]

This is the best thing Ive read..its the absolute truth..lol
maybe I should have stated Joe was more concerned with helping society than shaking his ass for money or running the game winning touchdown so Ben could feel like he's actually a part of the team :flipoff2:
the plummer wold be running and shaking that arse crack on tv,in a game, if given a chance. Joe isnt that concerned about peoples turds..he's just making a living.

endless entertainment

unfair.

Actually I'll disagree here quite strongly.
Lets just look in the Charltte area.

I can rattle off plenty NASCAR drivers that give in the 7 figures annually (Kahn, Gordon, Johnson, Earnhardt, Stewart, Busch, Petty to name a few)
Steve Smith (another athlete I despise who I know personally) Gives ~$1MM year to help provide sports uniforms to kids who can afford them.
The Jake Delhomme fund is still going strong.
Moose is still doing his.

Granted all these guys do get tax deductions for their efforts and employ some personal friends and side tail, but they do good deeds as well.

Thats one thing I believ you might actually be shocked by, for the most part the guys who make it in the League are better human eings than the ones I played with and I assume you did in college.

Yeah...that was said semi-tongue in cheek. I have quite a few buddies that do good work, and donate alot anonymously. But then I also have buddies, who blow their entire signing bonus on cars and women

Would it be possible that the reason ACC College basketball is so popular is that we secretly want to see a real team sport? Passing, plays, coaching, etc... I mean when Cam Newton does his Super Man routine in the end zone (Especialy when they are loosing)... it just drives me crazy. I think the disconnect for celebrities comes at this point. Act like you have been there before. Take Tommy Lee Jones in acting, Dale Earnhardt in racing. Real men acting like real men. The self promoting "TO" style of player is so anti-team effort, that I cant respect the guy even though he is obviously tallented. I played on an undefeated team in school. If you did much more than toss the ball to the ref and high five the guy who blocked for you, the coach would bench you. It was the strongest team mentality that I have ever seen. I know we werent pros, or even ACC... But, no one hated us. They respected us because of how we handled ourselves.

I watch college basketball because I love the sport. Basketball is a passion if mine and will always be. I'm a former college athlete. I know the hard work and the determination it takes to play on a college level. I have no ill feelings towards professional athletes. They are getting paid really well to do what they love. Isn't that everyone's dream? To do what the love for a living? They are under no obligation to donate it help out society. Just like you shouldn't have to donate your extra money to charity's. in my opinion wealth is subjective. What you consider rich could be seen as poor by someone else.

I don't see the problem with someone pulling for their hometown team. You live in Raleigh, and pull for State....what's the problem? You didn't go to State? So? I guarantee the players whose scholarships you help pay for and the coaches whose salary you help pay don't care if the season ticket holders went to the school or not.

None of the posters here played or worked for the Panthers, either, but a lot of you pull for them, because they're the "local" team. How's that any different than pulling for the local college team?

I can't speak for ncsu, but *most* athletic depts get ZERO funding from state money, and in some cases give a large donation to the general school fund every year. If you are not a booster, a season ticket holders, or other donator you don't pay shit towards athletes scholarships or coaches salaries.

I'm not saying people shouldn't pull for whomever they want, I just don't get using the word "we" when doing so.

Shrug.

It's the same at State, as far as the money. I'm fairly neutral about the "we" stuff. Americans talk about "we" when speaking of the USA. North Carolinians say "we" when talking about our state. (okay, as long as these damn yankee transplants don't do it. :flipoff2:)
Raleigh natives do it. So do counties, and right down to neighborhoods, and families and couples.

It's a collective thing. Lots of folks contribute to an athletic program. Tickets, dues, donations, apparel sales, etc. They are part of the collective effort to accomplish whatever it is the program is trying to. Hence, the "we". Hell the schools promote it. "Join the XX Booster Club". Which means "Join US". So if you join "us", you are by definition part of the "we".

And you're right, of tuition paid by students, not a dime goes to the athletics department. But some folks think only the students have the "right" to refer to their school's teams as "we", even though they have less to do with the teams than some business owner that buys a block of tickets so he can go and give some to his customers.

I get what you are saying, though. It's kind of like how people buy a certain brand of car or truck, then identify themselves with that, like the manufacturer did something for them to earn their allegiance by selling them a vehicle. Then you hear "I'm a Ford/Chevy/Dodge man, won't drive anything else". Now THAT, I don't get.

Meh, it's all about personality. I don't care a thing about sports or celebs, but can rattle off a bunch of meaningless jargon about cars. My wife is a big sports fan and was a college athlete. She doesn't seem to live vicariously through the TV but spends a fair amount of time there just like I spend a fair amount of time here. Both are unproductive...

We will all seek 'downtime' or pleasure. It just works out differently. You forgot to mention the video game producers that make the games that occupy millions of hours of wasted time...

I think the fans are to blame for the glorification of sports persons and actors.

What on earth makes a sports t shirt worth $40+? Why should a pair of air Jordan's cost $150+ or whatever they are. Why have sports tickets and concert tickets sky rocketed in price? Because THE FANS are willing to pay it. PERIOD! And then turn around and bitch about it.

I personally can't stand watching sports unless its Rugby. Namely because I find all others pretty freaking slow & boring, or the cry baby overpaid players are just plain annoying and arrogant. They aren't worthy of the attention.

I love the statement of them being Jesters in the Kings court. Extremely accurate.
