That was the internet's recommended work-around. It worked.
How do you play mkvs on your iThing?

I don't, never heard of them before now. in looking up what a .MKV is, I find that most every one has some sort of issue trying to play a Matroska file as there is usually some part of the decoder that is missing in the video player they are trying to use, no matter the device.
Suddenly, the iThing is a POS when trying to play a codec that needs custom settings in most every system it is played on. yeah, that makes perfect sense. How stupid of me.
How'd that work on the Windows device ? i'm sure there was some sort of configuration change and driver update that had to go with that to make it work. being Windows it couldn't have been just plug and play and it's popcorn time.
with absolutely zero configuration changes ever ? GotchaUm... No. My phone and the win7 PC at home play them natively.
And the iPad plays them after I changed the time zone to Toronto.
again, to many variables for things to "just work" there had to have been adjustments, no matter how minor. but I'm sure that makes for a far more superior user experience.Hell... The win7 htpc at home not only plays mkvs, but it bitstreams DTS audio to the AVR.

So, your iPad was not set to the correct time zone ?? Really ? and this is a critical error on whose part ? There is no difference in time from Raleigh>New York> Toronto, all on Eastern Standard Time, maybe something in Matroska doesn't recognize New York as a time standard? ( which is default when "Set Automatically" on iThings in the EST time zone ) A lot of apps won't work if the time/date isn't correct, it's the same in Android or Win7 I'm sure. and yes just to check, I turned off the default ( it was scary ) and set the time zone to Toronto, guess what? no changes in time or operation of the device ( I have since returned it to default setting, I would not want to disturb the Force that is Apple )

Wow he is upset. Don't bash his Apple products.
Just like how some people love jeeps and others Toyotas. Each does something's better than the other. However, don't tell the fanboys their platform sucks.
It sounded like you were mad. A few of the guys I work with are all about apple products bragging about what they can do. I think it's funny that they are so brain washed. I've had both and prefer the droid platform over iPhone.LOL, upset ? Fawk no ! We'd have this same ( or similar ) conversation face to face if we were together. I know his extreme dislike for Apple products and he likes to poke at me. it's all good.
And don't poke at my Toyotas either
I am kinda curious how he ended up with an iPad though, given past conversations.

Here's what I want to know: how did a 6'-5" corn-fed like you end up driving cars that were designed for this guy?

They just "work" !
Next thing you know, he's going to start talking about how Mexicans are really good at finishing sheet rock and cutting grass.
