Old URE Trail Maps

I'd love to go for a stroll down memory lane, I'll make a phone call monday. I have to be out of state the weekend of the 12th, but if I miss out oh well. How does the 5yh or 6th sound weather permitting?

I'd like to go along too.
I could help you old guys translate, in the case that we ran into some generation x'ers.
I know words like...''Word'' and ''holla'' and ''yo''

Seriously though, I'd like to go along. Yall let me know when this is gonna happen.
The colder the better for me...no yellow jackets to worry about!

I have a child who has been known to tell people that my first off roader was a wood burner....
You gonna walk in the woods with us, Don? Or are you too old....and feeble....? :D

....I'm thinkin' I've been told the second one was also a wood burner... gasoline hadn't quite been perfected at that time.

I might just be gettin' a bit older and slightly feeble, but I'd be honored to accompany a fellow elder on an educational stroll across the unbeaten path. Just give me a wee bit of advanced notice. However, for the record, the other half has already carved my schedule in stone for the upcoming week, and that includes the weekend. Good to hear from you, Bruce! :)

J C, we don't know anything at this point and we want you along. I just thought of something, When is deer season over with? Might not effect this at all, But.....I'm just thinking that I hear a Highpowered Rifle shots at the double parking lot if you listen close enough. Too random and not enough to be all coming from the shooting range.

deer season should be over on jan 1st. as far as the gps mapping a hand held unit is about the only way to go. being in a wooded area most modern gps systems dont work all that well. they are made for accuracy purposes within a 1/4", and cost alot of green. but the hand helds are only accurate within a 3 meter radius if i remember correctly, which is fine for mapping trails. i did it about 5-6 years ago with a buddy of mine when we first went there so we could navigate the trails better. on some of the units you can also name roads and put notes on certain areas to were if theres a place you like you can note it or if theres a place you never want to go to again you can note it.

I don't know about doing it in December while the trails are still open. There are still trail rides and other things going on till the trails close on the 15th, which would limit our number of people to show up. Right after that you have the Holidays, which eliminates the 2nd half of December for a lot of people. How would Jan 3rd (Sunday) work for most people? Or because of New Years on Friday would we need to push it back to the 15th or 16th?

Hey, Granny i'd swap the tennis balls for soccer balls. More flex and ground clearance not to mention breakover angle is up by 12%, better aproach angle too! Give sweetie a hug for me. Wouldn't think of doing it without you.

soccer balls?

Yeah, but if you move up to soccer balls, you'll have to go to 35 spline adjusters just to keep it reliable. Can't think of anything worse than being stuck on Kodak with a busted adjuster. It's a damn long drag back to the parking areas.

Middle of January sounds like a better time for all of us. Probably would suit the USFS better, too. That'd give us time to make up somethin' really good to tell 'em!

Ah....those were my tennis balls. But, given the good advice here, I'll keep an eye peeled for the after Christmas sales at the Sport Authority.

Oh....and some 35 spline adapters.

Maybe a build up thread.....LOL.

Thanks for the advice!

January sounds like a good time for this.

I'll be in Florida January. 35 spline adjusters? Red lable bedroom slippers for traction! This is how campfire stories get started!

Well I guess February would be an option, but hopefully by then if the first hike goes well we would have a 2nd hike arranged for Feb.

I sent a message over to Janet the Host at Arrowhead. Over the past years she has always been more than helpful with all things URE related, and will see what she has to say etc. I don't talk to Deborah on a regular basis like I do Janet, but I will be getting in contact with her hopefully also (seeing she is the actual FS).

redx I just assumed it was for granny, oh well you know what I mean.

LOL....Not a problem. Just having some fun.

Sounds like a great trip to see some of the history of URE....while gaining some potential of understanding how to move proactively forward with the trails we have. I really hope to be able to make it.

I'll just have to remember to bring my flannel housecoat, which matches the slippers. Could be cold that time of year. :D

You old farts with your high-tech tennis balls and adjusters can go jump in the lake! I'm greasin' the springs on the old wooden crutches, and gettin' the old sled out of storage. Someone needs to be prepared to help the Hot Dog Guy back to startin' point. Strangely enough, the other old goat somehow always seems to make it back under his own power. :D

January is good, just let me know.

wow... look at whats happened here.
the ball is a rollin now.

get a date and lets make it happen.
16 of jan looks good. Feb might be a little too cold.

All BS aside, if/when this does happen, I would like to invite 59Willys along on the adventure. After all it was his map that got this thing on a roll. How about it, Chris. :)

update

Contact has been made with the UNF staff this AM by some of us old farts who have a continuing first name basis relationship with them, and there is committment on both sides to do this looksee. They are very interested in working with a committee of sorts to look into all the possibilities for the OHV area, including matters other than trail openings. This process helps them prepare future plans and budgets and they like it when the input is knowledgeable and intelligent. That already nearly eliminates me.

Since everybody's plate is full until after the holidays, and since there's already a huge amount of the usual post and pre-season work on the schedule for the closure period after the holidays, we will begin the actual process sometime after the first of the year.

Everybody needs to take a chill pill, including us (But Dad, I want it NOW!), and let the process take its course. Any potential openings would not very likely be during the coming year because of the approval processes and trail preparations that would have to be performed, and April Uno is not that far away. Does the possibility of group workdays enter the picture here if things come to fruition?

So with all that in mind, we need to realize that as much fun as it might seem, more than a few people at a time stomping around in the woods is not the way to assess and discuss issues in a working process. We'll need to delegate the volunteer side of the process to a group of people who can maintain the pace and keep the ball rolling for those they represent. Each time we learn something that can be posted without something else being assumed or read into it, the words will appear here.

Since we made the effort and got the ball nudged a bit, we'll stay in touch, and after the first of the year, some of the movers and shakers in this NC4X4 bunch, and in whom "the force is strong", will be on the porch making announcements as they become official. Soon's we figger out who them movers and shakers are, that is.

So for now, contact has been made, the staff is receptive to a looksee, and the next steps will be forthcoming after New Years.

Oh, and Don, I notice Granny has been outfitted with quite a few "prosthetics."

Sounds great, I'm looking forward to the new year..

Thank you for the invite, Don. Just let me know when. I was on a workday down there back in the day and our job was to take the signs off of GoldMine.

59Willys

I know I'm gonna recognize you when I see you, but for the life of me I can't place you. Brain fade has become a way of life. Don says you're a good guy, but it came from Don, so.....
