bone stock on a 27" tall log

what are your plans for it

That's pretty impressive for stock! I didn't think those things were that flexable. looks like a cool project.

the driver side rear just started to lift off... the front sway bar is still connected cause teh bolts holding it on are so rusty i thinkim going to have to cut them off.

Plans are some 31's fender trimming, welded rear and wheel the hell out of it.

I only have $280 total in this thing including the purchase price. :D

Dang, that is pretty cheap. Put some huge tires on her, cut the fenders and wheel the little thing till it squats. :burnout:

Nice! I want a picture of that thing in the air please! :D

um i dont have a place to jump it.... i can get the one set to leave if i hit a bump hard enough.

know of anyone who has another set of XJ coils? I need a set to lift the front with.

Do you want stock? I might have my stock ones. I also might have a set of 3" lift coils. But you would have to wait a week or two for those. Let me know. Josh

i got a guy getting me some stock ones already.... now a 3" lift coil could be inteesting.

I know id have to drop the lower control arms up front and get some longer links in the rear. I think ill pass for now.

We finally got the kick out for a shakedown run... worked flawlessly. Welded diff, about 2" of lift and some 31" tires.

i was really suprised at teh amount of flex it has. It was able to drive all the way over the big white rock on Dickey Bell without lifting a tire.

SAS is coming... just sitting and searching for a deal on some Cruzer axles. Really want some out of a FJ80 or newer if they have the e-locker in them that is even better.

Mainly trying to keep the total build cost under $1000. So far we are at ~$265.

FJ-80 e-locker and "deal" are not in the same sentence, not ever.

Also, ya might want to have a good look under a FJ-80 before you think about pursuing the axles.. they are far from easy to work with. (But the front locker can go into a normal minitruck housing)

I have glanced at them but havent really put to much thought into a SAS. Yeah i know im not gonna find a great deal on them but untill im ready to start this im gonna keep my fingers crossed, eyes open and hope.

Are the FJ80 axles not a lot wider than the regular mini-truck axles found in the pre IFS pickups and runners?

What makes these so difficult to work with?

That thing looked like a blast to drive yesterday. Even with the rear shocks unbolted and the street tires.

The fj 80 axles are several inchs wider that the pre ifs axles i'm not quiet sure but some where around 60 inch. i drive a mini truck sas and have spent agood deal of time looking for the center section with the e-locker and that alone goes for atleast $600.00 and the gears are reverse cut so they are not that cheap either. So if you are looking for a budget build you should try and find an 85' or earlier truck to steal the axles from.
As far as being hard to work with they are set up for coil springs, and you will have to remove quite a few more brackets where the lower and upper control arms attach. and with most fj80 axles because of the size of the rotor and caliper you have to run atleast a 16 inch wheel.
I don't all the answers for you but i hope this helps a little.
one more bonus of the mini truck axles is how many people make up grades for them.

Stock Toyota front axle measurements for comparison:
55.5" wide, 29" spring perch centers, '79-85 Toyota trucks and 4runners
63.5" wide, (set up for coil springs) 90-97 FJ80 and FZJ80 Landcruisers
'86-95 IFS front end is about 58.5" wide
'93-98 T100 IFS front end is about 65" wide

Toyota Rear Axle Widths:
55" wide, '79-85 trucks/4runners
58" wide, '86-95 trucks/4runners
60.75" wide, '95.5-up Tacomas/4runners
66.75" wide, '93-98 T100 trucks

i found this stuff out on the web it may help

We finally got shocks for it today. Gotta mount them up sometime this week. I hope 13.6" of travel is gonna be enough.

Thats what i was thinking with the measurements.

We were also discussing using the stock axle ratios and set it up on a radius arm and coil spring setup, so i dont know for sure what would be hard about working with them. Woundt it be feasible to use the stock radius arms and mount them on a custom x-member? I think the 4.24:1 t-case ratio will compensate for the higer axle gearing, and if it is still too high we can always double the case with a sami case behind it and the hi-range will eb reduced as well b/c the kick and sami t-case gears both affect the hi range gearing.

Keep us posted on the progress.I picked up a 95 4 dr from a guy at work for $50.:D It has a few issues but I've been driving it all summer and haven't touched a thing. It's about time for some tires,so I thought about some spring spacers and some 30's.I don't want to kill the gas mileage because that's the main reason I bought it.

So,did you use stock XJ coils?Did these give you the 1 3/4" of lift by themselves?Just curious because I'm sure I can locate a couple sets of these.
