does anybody in CTB know how to paint a vehicle? I’m thinking a few different ideas in my head and if I go this route I’d like someone to teach me how to paint my Jeep. PO painted it with house paint and it has brush marks and only in certain places. It’s three different shades of blue. I don’t want anything amazing just all the same color and not look like rattle can.
 
I know a little, I should have everything still to do it. My Pop was a Paint/Body man for a long time. Biggest thing is prep work, the more quality time you put in on the front side the better things will turn out in the end.
 
I would imagine you would need to strip the current paint off maybe? Assuming it is latex based where automotive paint would be solid based. I don’t imagine you would have a very good finished look just scuffing it up and going over it.

I could easily be wrong though.

Shouldn't have to strip it as long as it's the original paint. I don't think they're ever used Latex on cars. Mostly Lacquer/oil, enamel, and water. They're are certain things you can spray over others but I cant remember off the top of my head. A good scuff, then primer/body work, then paint/clear.

@Chris_Keziah he said someone brushed on house paint that’s why I assumed latex as it’s most common.

Me and a buddy went to buy a Jeep off some lying sleez bag that was actually on this sight. Redbeard or something like that. Anyway that dude claimed to be some great body man and painting this CJ5 before we headed to TN and bought it. We got there and this dude didn’t even own an air compressor. Seriously there wasn’t one anywhere. Dude had rolled paint on from Lowe’s and filled rust holes with newspaper and bondo before we got there. Dude was a wacko and lying thru his teeth about everything that night. Sorry, I’m rambling again. Something about “house painted jeep” stirred up some hard feelings over a long drive and bad deal....
 
So first off @castortroy you realize that’s the wrong color for you, but it does look good. I believe the paint that’s on it is latex based because it peels off very easy and doesn’t feel like paint chips. Again PO used house paint and a brush. So for prep...just use a sander? And tape everything good? Then spray
 
Hell if it's latex and peels instead of chipping get a pressure washer with a 0 degree turbo tip and it'll probably strip it all off without any sanding?? I've stripped latex paint off of trailers like that without heat just turbo tip

Yeah yeah....moment of weakness.....actually I wanted to do black, but unless it's laid on a perfect body, and in a booth by a true painter, black looks like ASS

Anything you don't strip entirely down to metal will bubble and flake. That latex screwed your whole world up as far as another finish. Prep is everything. See that first pic of my CJ? That was after I towed it back from the sandblaster. Yep..to the steel!
 
I'm a rattle can self-proclaimed expert :D I had the same issue with latex paint brushed on the Sami...over multiple other layers of a paint & 30+ year decals.

Being super ambitious, I took it to bare metal - it took lots of time & sandpaper - hell I even tried my hand at sandblasting.

If you're looking to paint it and then dump it, that may work for you, but anywhere you paint over anything other than stock finish and or steel will develop issues eventually
 
I rattle canned my first ZJ and wet sanded between coats. I did black, and as @CasterTroy said, it showed every little imperfection. I got sick and tired of sanding though...
 
Solid based will go over solid based but not over a synthetic or water based product. Bare in mind I’m using my knowledge of construction coatings such as deck/wall coatings, Epoxy, and acrylic or solid based sealers. But most of that is the same concept and the basics carry over.
As Troy said, you will need to remove all of the latex house paint the PO has blessed you with if you want it to look half way decent and hold up.

I've painted quite a bit. I'm no painter!!! But I have a buddy who is one of the best motorcycle and custom painters I've ever seen. He's rubbed off on me enough to know that prep and sanding are everything. Hell with the CJ I sanded, prepped and taped for 3 weeks (evenings and weekends) before I shot the paint. It took me all of about 3 hours to shoot the paint......but the prep :rolleyes:

I believe the old saying is 3:1 sanding to painting, I am with you, it is more like 100:1!

@Tails prep, prep, prep, and then when you think you are done, do it again. This is what kills me about painting because I want to see the results. I just painted the hood of my current TJ black (I know, I don't learn), and I got tired of sanding and now I have orange peel. But in my defense I did paint this one black because the PO had "Zombie Response Vehicle" down the sides of the hood were a rubicon sticker would go; black was the only thing to cover that up after I stripped the stickers off.

Well thanks guys I guess I will not try my luck at painting my own Jeep. I do not have this thing called patients.

I have been contemplating keeping the 2.5 and dropping a V8 into it. But the price is adding up quick to what I would have in trading my Jeep for a 4.0 and starting from scratch. I’m not really sure right now what way to go. My Jeep does ok for wheeling around here and the time being. However with joining y’all and becoming the assistant director for Patriot Therapy has me on the road more plus pulling a trailer regularly and the TJ just isn’t up for all that. I’m not a fan of JK’s so not sure what to do. I’m open for any ideas. Just keep in mind that it’s used for more then just crawling.
 
X2 for trailer and tow rig. Half ton truck will pull it fine.

I find it takes the same time to hook up a trailer, drive on it, strap it down and unload at the trail as it does to drive to the trail and air down, top off fuel, air back up when done and head home.
The added assurance of knowing if you break it bad you only need to get back to your trailer also makes wheeling way more fun.
 
The tow rig and trailer doesn’t work when we have veterans to take “over landing” but not this glamorized crap going on today. I mean the travel off beaten path and camp. The wrap idea is a idea but won’t it rip off easily when I hit trees which knowing me is gonna happen
 
I am not trying to shoot down ideas, I just have been thinking about these different ideas now for a while and I’m not sure the correct path to go. I know that collectively y’all have a lot more answers then I do. I’m sure there is a magic solution for me but I can’t find it.

Same thing that would solve all of OUR perceived obstacles :D

What makes this hobby so interesting is how we all solve these obstacles without throwing shitloads of cash at it and getting creative

Step 1 learn to drive
Step 2 fix body
Step 3 have it wrapped
Step 4 wheel the shit out of it
