Thought I'd ask here, before business starts tomorrow

Do we need to add our 15 year old, new driver to our insurance during the "driving permit period"?

We will purchase her 1st car this week and was wondering if everything should go in my name and not even mention it to ins company until shes 16.

Obviously she wont drive unless we are with her, that's why I'm wondering. I feel like if I ask the insurance company they're gonna say yes no matter what.

And is it safe to also assume that my insurance rates will go up alot?

How much?

No, afaik, permitted drivers run under drivers insurance. (Since they are learning. That's why you sit up front, and go with on driver test)

It will go up up up when she gets her license though. Not sure how much.

If you put her on her own policy when she gets her license it'll be cheaper than adding to your policy - that way since you don't let her drive your vehicles, she doesn't need be on there. Plus I'm assuming you will not have comp/collision on her car though it may be worth it depending price point of vehicle and replacement though insurance will not be cheap. Also I'm sure you know you want to have coverage amount at least the same as your real property values. (For CYA purposes)

At least that's how it was when I got my license 17 years ago...

Keep her as an occasional driver. Move your van and RV to a different insurance company. If you have 3 or more vehicles and 3 drivers her insurance will be higher.

Also, buy her a Cherokee so when she wrecks it you can easily repair it. Speaking from experience!

They don’t need to be added to your policy until they have a license. With the permit they are covered under your policy so no price increases or anything.

Pretty much what everyone else has said. No needed to add until 16 and talk with your agent about having them on a separate policy. When my step son was that age I had a GT500, didn’t pay much attention when I added him until I got the bill. They made him the primary driver of the Shelby and I was WTF?!?!?! I had to isolate him from my other vehicles as his driving credentials, or lack there of, went against those as well. I told them the boy wasn’t even supposed to walk by the car without me being present much less sit behind the wheel making vroom vroom noises.

If your family has smartphones, make everyone download Life360. Its free, and I can track my daughter. Tells me where, she’s at, when she’s arrived, leaves, and gets home. Also tells me her speed, and other stuff. It’s handy for sure. Even shows how much charge her phone has. You can set it up where they can’t see you. That way they won’t know when you’re at the liquor store.

I also have the Life360 app and it's only as extreme as you choose to make it.

Since I get the weekly driver reports, noone else sees that my top speed for the week often exceeds triple digits. :D

Girls cost less to insure than boys.
They must have proof of insurance when they go in for their license (not permit) so just before they are going to go for their real drivers license you need to call insurance and add them to your policy. And it's not that you're adding them to a particular CAR, but to your policy. I mean, they will ask what car they will be driving, but technically you are adding them to your entire policy. And it's MUCH cheaper to add them and have your whole policy go up than to even THINK about putting them on their own policy.
The boy was about a $40 a month add to ours (9 cars)
Each girl added about $28 a month
Then the cost increase of the vehicle they drive has to be accounted for second. The boy had a 2000 GTI and it was $47 a month with just liability. I never added any of the kids to the other vehicles as an occasional because they were told if they fud up THEIR car, or got a ticket, THEY had to make arrangements.
The girls both had newer vehicles so their policies were more.

Verizon offers something similar through their stuff.

So, all that data just stays locally on your phone... right?
Might ask who else has access to it....
... why is it free?
I once had a conversation with an insurance agent about a similar app that they also offer.. .free... "If you enroll, we could lower your rates."
" 'could' " I ask? "Why isn't that guaranteed?"
"Well.... that depends on what we see in the data...."

No I'm sure it doesn't stay local. I already have Google maps, so my privacy ship has been out to sea for a long time. But this data tracking and selling currently benefits me, so I'll tolerate it.

That is what I thought and did. However that backfired. Just ask Dylan as he ended up with what was left of Daughter 1's Cherokee. It did however take a total beating and saved her life. Each of my girls added $1500 a year back when they got their license. Each year it would go down based on their records. We looked at single insurance for the first one and was . I am sure there are a lot of variables, may have to just shop around.

You have chosen to set sail on your privacy ship, but it's a different story to also shove it off on your kids. Or spouse. Or whomever you're tracking...

I use the same app. They use Google maps also though.

That ship sailed the moment they put a "smartphone" in their hand

Of course, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.....but hell, as a society, we've gone from valuing privacy to openly inviting anyone and everyone into every intimate detail of our lives for the sake of convenience, and or saving a buck.

Just to be clear, I'm not shoving it off in anyone. My wife insisted on the app because she has an iPhone and I have Android, so we couldn't use find friends.

Yes..when @GotWood posted that I should buy her a Cherokee, I immediately thought of you, your daughter, and that mangled cherokee. And the fact that is was not repairable.
All that said and done, I wouldn't shy away from buying a decent Cherokee for Maycee though.
