Puddle of oil

This is exactly how I keep an eye on the oil level in my heep. When it stops leaking, I dump a quart in it.......

298k, and still going strong....
Same here.

oil spot - check

trans fluid spot - check

PS fluid spot - check

drips under diffs - check

ready to roll.

Some of you guys are gonna make me catch an aneurysm. There was a time though my Bronco ran from Knoxville to Atlanta and back on Type F. Didn't have the money to buy any more 50w, but had several cases of Type F, and knew I'd need at least 2 gallons of oil to make the trip.

Wait you put trans fluid in place of oil?

If that’s what you meant, that’s shocking. I was always told the ATF was not compatible with the seals/gaskets and would ruin them in a very short time. I could be misinformed though, cause I know some people talk about adding a quart of atf and running it a few minutes to break up sludge.

Cant speak for longterm, but I have run a quart of ATF through plenty of motors to clear things up. Have also dumped a quart in the tank for the same reason.

You're not wrong and you're not misinformed based on the data out there. I was broke...plain and simple. But I'll still toss a quart in and drive around for a while for sludge purposes. I'll also say I can't get into the science of it, but I can't say I've seen any discernible difference in seals/gaskets with any of the vehicles I own and I run them all to 200,000 miles. I'm also in the extreme minority in saying, the engine doesn't particularly care what's lubricating it, as long as it's being lubricated (assuming broken in). I used to submit oil samples through Blackstone on all my vehicles religiously...new oil, old oil, cheap oil, expensive oil, used oil, mixed with trans fluid...it always came back that I had more life in the oil until I started getting to that 20-25,000 mile range...in some cases even pushed it as far a 30k with filter changes every 5k.

I have an oil sample kit that I plan to use on my truck here soon, mostly for curiosity’s sake. Currently has almost 5,000 miles on this oil.

I had an old toyota celica that burn/used oil as fast as I could dump it in it. I always hit up my uncle, who is a mechanic, for used motor oil. I even rigged up the windshield washer reservoir to provide a continuous drip of old oil into the engine so I wouldnt have to top it off so often.....

I had a Honda like that once. I had to put a gallon a week in that thing. It didn’t leak a drop, but man it looked like a James Bond smoke screen behind it. I would get used oil from my buddy who serviced FedEx ground trucks and just ride around with 2-3 gallons of used oil lol.

Got killer fuel mileage though, guess it was burning more oil than gas!

I tried the ATF trick in the engine of my old willys, 1 quart of atf 4 quarts of cheap oil (had water in oil from bad positioning of air filter), ran it for 5 minutes. Drained everything, the atf worked great for cleaning the engine, but also wiped out the antique seals in the engine. Pulled the engine, replaced every single seal and gasket, then realized what "porous sand casting" meant. It leaks oil thru the block! If it's not dripping it's out.
