Ram vs. GMC (or Chevy....)

I am looking to upgrade my daily driver / work truck....I have driven the big 3....Ford, GM, Ram and I have decided that Ford is no longer in the running, I don't like the Turbos (I like reliability, I have had turbos, I have played with Turbos, my truck will not have them), I am also not all that impressed by the programming of the transmission / ecoboost engine interactions (lots of delayed 2nd gear grabs at 60mph on the highway).

Anyone out there running around in a new generation GM or Ram got any good anecdotal info to sway me one way or the other? I have always been a GM guy, but Ram is starting to edge them out, I love the 3.92 rear, the 8 speed is awesome (though the transmission knob is going to take some getting used to), the 5.7l does not have direct injection (which I view as a plus). GM....6L80 is pretty bullet proof, 5.3l is a proven motor (although the truck block is now Aluminum), I like the tilt/tele wheel, and the column shifter. Info-tainment be damned, I don't really care about gizmos. I do wish GM offerred the 6.2l or 3.73 gears in the lower trim, Reg. cab pickups, the might make my choice easier. From my test drives so far, the 5.3/3.42 sierra was peppy, but lumbered about, the 5.7l/3.92 Ram was a rocket ship!
 
I loved my 2014 ram, the shift knob only took a day getting used to. It will be lots of fun when you drive something else reaching for the dash... Sold that truck when I got a 2016 Chevy 1500 from work. Hands down would take the ram over the Chevy any day. Also the steering wheel is offset in the Chevy not centered on the seat. Gets old after 8hrs a day in it.
 
I hadn't noticed the wheel being off center (but I was in a 40/20/40 seat model)...maybe I compensated for it and didn't realize it. I will say the wheel mounted buttons on the GMC look like they will last about 15k miles before they are worn and cracked.
 
Test drive a tundra.
When you like it more and save 6k you can thank me.
 
Tundra isn't even on the radar, read the reviews, watched the videos, and I previously worked for a tier 1 supplier of Toyota (tundra parts included). Sticking to GM and Ram this time around.....plus they both have some pretty awesome discounts on the 2016's at the moment, I doubt there would be money to be saved in a tundra.
 
I'll take that bet. Just made the same decision with no brand loyalty. Yota won hands down for me. 35k miles later I couldn't be happier with my choice.

I'll take that bet. Just made the same decision with no brand loyalty. Yota won hands down for me. 35k miles later I couldn't be happier with my choice to be a devoted Toyota loyalist. Here's a picture of my truck:

Haha....but back on topic, I don't want to stray too far into why I don't want a toyota, all I can say is if you have something to add on the values or negatives of the Ram vs. GM debate, please feel free to elaborate. I hadn't noticed the off center steering wheel....stuff like that is really helpful. Most of the reviews I see have to do with the 6.2l GM trucks with the max towing package (3.73 gears) and the ecodiesel Ram.....which is the pinacle leaders that each brand uses to justify their "best in class...blah blah"....but I am looking at the bread and butter base V8 and lowest gears available.
 
My opinion on Japanese trucks is this....after working for two of the major auto manufacturers (one US, one JPN), I can tell you that "lessons learned" with regard to poor engineering decisions, and stupid things people do with their vehicles, takes generations (vehicle and human) to be ironed out. American vehicles started out over engineer, computers came in and we started playing with how "lean" we can make something and still have it meet "minimum specs".

The Japanese started at the computer portion of the learning curve, and are standing on the lessons learned by others. They make a mean mid-sized truck, but they still have a lot to learn about the use and abuse a full-size truck will see during its life cycle.

All this being said, I did look at the Tacoma, as it was the only truck outside of the 2500+ Ram w/ a cummins and the colorado with the anemic 4 cyl. that is offered with a manual trans.....when you start looking at purchase prices and resale value, mid-sized trucks don't make sense for a new vehicle purchase.

I hope they fixed the chitty brakes and no front articulation the first gen. 4wd I drove for years had. It was a horrible ride offroad at anything above 5 mph. The motor and trans worked just fine though.

Even after the ridiculous ass air conditioner story???

If you have to take out the transmission to fix a moldy smell coming from the air conditioner, you have fucked up as a car company, Toyota.

Also, the new ones are ugly.
 
I bought a 2016 Ram, couldn't have been happier. Fuel mileage is great for a full size, I average between 18 20 mpg. Best I've got was 22. Price was another thing for me, for what I paid I wouldn't have gotten nearly as many options with a GM. Towing and payload capacity is supposed to be higher with the Rams but to many variables there.

All in all I am very satisfied with my purchase. I bought it last December and have had no issues. Definitely don't get the bedside storage. It's been discussed on here and makes your bed smaller.

The shift knob is about unmanly as you can get in a truck, but that exhaust note from the Hemi makes up for that.....

GM truck guy here, my 2500 gasser is a '12 so I don't know if my input would be relevant or not. I love mine and have spent 8-12 hours straight in it multiple times on trips with no issues (not even in or around my slightly above average phallus). Truck is dead quiet in the cab with minimal road feel through the controls and has great power and brakes. The interior and exterior has held up well. A buddy has a new ram and I have rode in it a couple of times and it is nice too but he kinda is an asshole so I discredited his input on it. I also hate the billboard size letters on the Ram. I also would consider a nice used Yugo from upstate NY before I would consider a Nissan of any size.
 
Funny, the ram box is one of my favorite features, I keep a couple hundred pounds of tools in my truck, and I love that the key fob locks and unlocks the boxes, my Comanche is a short bed, and the toolbox shortens up the usable space by almost 1/3. Bed size isn't a huge deal for me, I have a crew cab long bed when big stuff has to be moved.
 
Drove to Raliegh and back today.... Avg 21.3 mpg. Not bad considering I set the cc @ 78 most of the way..
 
Where the hell is Raliegh ?:flipoff2: .........I was impressed w the airconditioned seats in a bosses Dodge while we worked on a landfill outside Columbea S.C. in july 4 years ago. We had just hopped in the truck to get lunch on a 100* day and he was on the phone when I noticed some buttons w seats and wavy lines. I pushed the right button and my sweaty ass,legs and back were soon chilling in the wonderful coolness of those seats. The knob shifter was weird but I enjoyed driving his loaded truck back to raliegh. Plenty of power and a nice, smooth ride on the highway.

I have always had a ram

Either change the trans fluid regular from day 1 or never change it

Other than the trans I loved all of mine. I have had 4 and only 1 had a trans problem. And I towed heavy boats with 2 of them and those weren't the ones that had trans problems. My Dakota trans has been replaced twice

Hell if I know..... Still trying to figure that one out.... All I know is I was up around a bunch non driving fools...... Then I got back to Charlotte with even more dumbass steering wheel holders....
