This reminds me of a story my dad told me:
When he was growing up (1960s) they spent their entire summers on Kerr Lake. They used to pull each other around on what they called the "red board", which was literally a piece of plywood, rounded off, painted red, that they pulled behind the boat. We actually just threw away the 2nd gen version of it last year.

One year, they screwed a bar table and stool to it and tied it up with about 300' of rope, tied really low on the boat so that if you were a passer by, you would see a boat full of smiling idiots pass you, then a few seconds later you would see a loan idiot on a bar stool gliding across the water.

Funny story, but never tried it myself...
