wow thsi pitman arm is so stuck on the splined threads the arms of the puller are bending. How much force must that take?

Guess it needs a little more saoking in BP blast and a lot more profanity.

Blaming it on the oil giants?

Heat arm around splines w/ torch, then use hammer.

Start heating it about two or three inches away from the splines. Let the heat expand the pitman before the sector, then use hammer.

Be carefull not to melt the seal. I had a toyota arm that I wanted to save from a junk gearbox. I went to some extreme measures, and finally trashed it with the box.

oops. Sure, why not.

Ah, of course. Will do.

But sure more profanity will help it along, too.

You need a different puller, the cup style. Works better

you mean like this?

never sen them before but I def see how that would be better.

Switch to a 1:1 mix of acetone and atf as a penetrating oil, its more effective than pb blaster.

That's one I have never tried! I will have to attempt it next time I am in this situation,.... no, I guess I need to go ahead and mix some.
Any advice on what kinda container to use? I know Acetone will melt a lot of things

I have pulled a few big ones on heavy trucks. Be carefull with the heat! If you have an strong air hammer/chisel, put the blunt or mushroom bit in it and come from the top on the pitman. Work in a circle around it. Leave the puller on it while you do it. Also, sometimes you can tighten the pitman nut up a little more with an impact gun, before you try to remove it and that will break the rust loose inside. Adding your favorite penatrating oil/mixture will obviously help. Remember that the lock washer and/or nut are for one use only. Thow them away and install a new one.

Might try hooking the tie rod back up and twisting the steering wheel also.

I cut mine off with a cutoff wheel after trying what seams to be all everybody has told you to try and 2 days of profanity, even took to 2 4X4 shops and they had no luck.

Yeah, I've never met a pitman arm that wasn't a pain in the ass. I did buy a pickle fork attachment for my air chisel as I've heard a lot of good things about that method but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Usually once you've got the puller on there at the verge of breaking, a 3lb hammer takes care of it.

Wow I've tried all these tricks, no luck. Even lots of cussin'....
I have to replace the arm anyway... the whole reason I'm pulling it is b/c I'm really replacing the relay rod (center link) and the balljoint on the arm is spinning... I think thats parts of whats so frustrating, I didn't even plan on or have a reason to replace it, just the RR..
but anyway may just go ahead w/ Angelkeeper's method! But can it be done w/o screwing the splines on the PS box?

Yes, thats why I took such a closeup so you could see i didn't cut all the way through. pickle fork and a 3lb hammer at the end, and my 4" drop arm went on and works perfect. good luck.:driver:

Been there and done that...
Since you dont need to take the pitman off to remove the tie rod end that is spinning, carefully cut the tierod end off with a cut off tool between the center link and the big end of the tie rod end. Center weld a nut to the remaining cut end. (Or clamp it with vice grips) Put a wrench on it, take the castle nut off and drive it out.
Taaaa Daaaah! You are done.

be careful , I had that problem and the puller broke into and one of the pieces cut my arm . I did not need stiches but it was a good size slice from the metal .

Lay about a inch of weld bead on the pitman arm outside of the secter and it should fall off.
