Rear shock options for a TJ

So I ripped a lower shock mount off the axle tube this weekend, and in the process bent the shock. SO I am looking for some opinions on shocks, and a way to get the lower mount higher to get them out of harms way. What are your thoughts?

Not much you can do without changing quite a bit back there. I actually lowered the lower shock brackets on one of ours a couple of months ago, just to get the shock in a better spot in its travel. Weld the bracket back on and run it.

How much lift do you have? I think I have a 4" rear shock down in the barn that you can have, if that shock doesn't cycle anymore.

Shorter body shocks have less travel.

That's not the best upgrade.

I agree but with moving the shock up 4-6 inches from stock your limited on what shocks to run. I ended up giving up probably an inch of up travel to gain about 4in of down travel compared to how I was set up... Which wasn't stock to start with

Thanks guys, good ideas.

Crazy thought, do you need shocks on a mostly Offroad rig? I wheeled yesterday for three hours with no rear passenger shock and I really didn't notice much difference. I am not advocating this, just asking for opinions on what I might not be thinking about.

I think I am at about 3.5" to 4" suspension lift. Yeah the shock got hung up in the tire when it popped loose and bent the shaft of the shock pretty good, so now the shock is just a trophy haha

outboard the shocks while you are at it.

With no rear shock on a TJ you will have the axle move around when it is torqued and unseat and eventually lose a spring or ruin a driveshaft. Had it happen to a friends TJ at the SHOP

Yes. I had two blown out shocks rode like that for 2 years thinking the same way.... Night and day difference with good shocks now

Better handling? Less body roll?

Both and when I'd come off something it was less of a hard hit. I'm leaf sprung in the rear so it's alittle different but it also stopped some wheel hope I was having.

Went from auto parts store shocks to fox. Any high quality shock makes a difference. imo no matter the brand.

I don't think he has enough room to outboard them.

And besides, the control arm mounts hang just as low. Getting rid of the shock doesn't change anything from a clearance perspective.

Valid points. I like the shock options when you outboard and you can control a little more on the length when you do it.
