Found a local rental place this weekend and went and checked them out. Was quoted $300 a day for a mini excavator or bobcat. Said he had tracked and wheeled. In case you curious here is the google link with mixed reviews. camden tool rental - Google Search

So what do I need to know before I try and rent a piece of equipment? I forgot to ask about transport. whether the trailer comes with the equipment or I use my own. It appears to be a mom and pop type business which someone suggested I try and find. He basically said if I picked up on Friday at 5 or so and returned on Monday morning it would be $600 for either piece. Right now I'm looking at ripping out 130' of rusted old fence line and post to put in new fence. There are a lot of privet stumps and vines and dead vegetation. Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe im crazy but id think for only slightly more than 600 bucks you could just hire a landscape guy to do that for you. Hes already got all the equipment and will knock it out in a half day.

I've rented a skidsteer from homedepot twice. It is on a trailer ready to go.

Probably crazy. I'd add a 0 to your budget.

The only Home Depot around me that rents is in Columbia. About 45 min - hour one way.

For comparisons sake . Small places tend to have better service and better cared for equipment as it their living.

If those bushes were any decent size, it might take the whole weekend for a $300 day baby ex to do the job. $600 probably isn't far from what it would cost to have someone come do what you're talking about (not including fence install) maybe even more than what you could get someone to do it for.

For comparison sake, I rented a skidsteer(wheeled) from our local place for the weekend and it was right at $400, delivered. They dropped it off Friday at 2PM and picked it up Monday morning.

The fence line. Haven’t found anyone local yet. @Wes id near me.

The fence line. Cut some back yesterday looking for the hole our dog escaped through.

If you are driving on grass, get tracked. Tracked is usually more expensive to rent.

trailers don’t usually come with the equipment. Most places you can go pick up and transport yourself. Otherwise you are paying a drop off and pick up fee or renting their trailer.

most rental places base the per day costs on 8hrs run time. If you go over those hours, you are paying more $. Mom and pop places are more forgiving on the hours, usually.

tupically a week’s rent is the cost of 3 days. So if you see it going to 3 days, might as well do the weekly rate to get the additional hours and some flexibility in the days.

Around here, transport is extra. I've always picked up the equipment myself on my own trailer
For what your doing, choose the piece that allows you to also pick up and load the removed material onto whatever you need it to. Otherwise, you're gonna be busting your back to load it later
I love a skid steer for a ton of uses, but I think you'll be happier with a mini-ex for what you're needing to do.

I looked at it and thought skid steer with grapple, dump trailer, and an hour or two. Too bad you're too far away.

. Yea. I could have a nice bottle of your preferred drink and fuel money. I’d just pile it out back for when they lift the burn ban.

So what’s the deal with the burn ban anyway? Can’t make it 72 hours without rain around here for 2+ years and still have a burn ban.

Yea so about that. Governor and his team basically said they did that so anyone with the covid wouldn’t be at an increased risk. I think it’s BS. It was done by the forestry commission and they also said it would be county dependent.

I once worked at a rental place. Pretty much agree with most of what is said on here. We had trailers, but I don't remember if we charged for them with equipment. We charged on pick up & delivery, plus a High price per gallon on equipment fuel. Be sure it's full when you pick it up, & return it Full! Weekends were "pu after 4, Friday - return by 8 am. Monday. Holiday's you get 1 extra day. BUT, it's limited to 8 hours & they have an hour meter! You also sign for any damage. Call in if you have a breakdown, & they stop your time & work with you on repairs or replacement.
We'd generally tell homeowners when renting something like a stump grinder, or equipment that Only rented by the day, to Plan for it. If you needed it for 4 hours, find some neighbors that need it & will chip in. On the fence post, brambles, & bushes, don't just knock them over. Try picking them straight up. They come out of the ground much easier, straight up, than trying to push them up or digging them. That's where the Thumb, grapple, or 4n1 bucket, is handy! Some equipment has a 4 hour rental, also. And, they may give you a rain day off, as long as you don't pass the 8 hours! Enjoy!

I've gotten frustrated every time I have rented something. Get there at 8a.m. to pick it up, end up waiting 2 hours to finally drive off because everybody else got there at 8 to pick up their rental. Or, be there early to pick up, get told "it just came back in after 5 yesterday, we need about an hour to service and clean it before it goes out...but they don't give you any time credit. By the time you get it loaded and unloaded, and allow time to load and return it, a full day rental is only a half day of work.

If I'm going to use something more than twice, I'd usually just as soon buy it. Anything under a thousand bucks or so I'd just as soon buy outright anyway....no sense paying a third to half of purchase price in rent for a day's use.

this was how I ended up with the tractor I have, the area I wanted to clear and grade was going to take me longer than a few weekends, so multiple rentals was cost prohibitive, especially factoring transport. Loader, box blade and a belly mower, Now that I’ve had it for 10 years, it’s probably been one of the more competent purchases I’ve made as a home owner. The repairs it’s needed have factored to be less then the purchase and repairs of the 2 previous riding mowers it replaced and it’s still going strong @ 23 years old
