Ring Door Bell

I have one, and like it, video quality could be better but it is certainly nice to have

Adding to the above, Amazon now owns Ring, in some areas, they have allowed law enforcement access to cam footage in areas where crimes have taken place.....without home owner consent..... as you gave that right up when you subscribed.

there is more to it, and they have amended the TOS but just knowing it’s being done without consent or court order is a hard no for me.

I personally will never own a Ring for the type of reasons listed above. Not a fan of how they are being used in a very "big brother" manner with little disclosure to the owners. There have even been leaks of Ring employees nabbing footage from their friends homes to pick on them about ongoings at their homes.

IMO the best system is one where the footage either remains local, or is wit ha company who has vowed encryption with only your access.

Don't put a camera where you don't want the Chinese or US or Russian government to see it. Dont put a camera where you don't want random internet hackers to see it. Don't put a camera where you don't want Google/Amazon/Microsoft/Apple/etc employees to see it.

If they want to watch who goes in and out of my driveway, they can already so it with satellites or a bunch of other ways anyway.

I have Arlos mounted on the driveway, and Wyze cams looking out from the house.

I picked one up on Saturday. Installed it and I gotta say, I really like it. Our main reason for getting one, was we just wanted to be able to see if anyone comes up to our door or in our yard throughout the day when we aren't there or when the wife is at home by herself with our girl and someone comes knocking on the door, I will be alerted and can see what is going on. Also have an echo dot my wife got for Christmas last year that has never even been used and hooked it up to use as our chime (since we don't have a hardwired doorbell) and not have to purchase anything extra to make it work the way we need it to.
I know there is a big threat with stuff being hacked and I have read stories with cameras and even baby monitors being hacked and big brother being able to hear you, but I figure I already have a smart phone, laptop, ipad, etc, so I figure if they wanna hear me or see me, they have plenty of access points already.

We have two Ring cameras at the house. We can't seem to keep the MFers connected to the internet. I had one at the shop that we used for a few years and it was always working. Not sure what is up with my house ones though.

I just had the same issue with our thermostat. Wifi went out on it one day and could never get it connected till last night. I hope our Ring doesn't have any issues. its pretty close to our router and has a good RSSI rating.

I have SimpliSafe doorbell camera. It works well.

Also have two amazon “blink” cameras. They work well for what they are. Nothing give out any info that isn’t already obviously available. They work well for seeing front porch and checking on the dogs on back porch.

I do see the option to allow “blink” to access footage for its neighborhood thing. I have that selected “off”. When I go into that, it redirects to a ring site.

The blink cameras were substantially cheaper than ring cameras.

I also have wyze cameras for the house. App works well, and playback clarity is far better than the doorbell or blink battery cams.

Had a sales person come by the house yesterday when I was at work, Ring camera picked up his motion before he even rang the doorbell and I was able to see the live feed on the phone and watch him. Pretty cool if you ask me. I can also go in the app and go through the night and see if there was anything going on.

Got a $100 gift card to BestBuy for Christmas and was thinking about using it to get the original Ring doorbell.

Anyone have one? How do you like it?
I like ours. It was actually a gift for my parents but didn't work well with their set up...wifi, etc. Works well for us. Sometimes it takes a little while to answer the door bell, ie. the person will be gone by the time i get through the buffering to access the cam. Footage is good. Overall 8/10 and might get more Ring stuff as our Arlo stuff has kicked the bucket after a few years of good service.

I wish the video quality was a little better. I know the Version 2 and the Pro have better video quality but for us only having the pay the taxes on this one, I'm good with it.

Updating this because Ring seems like an easy plug and play system. We would only use for front and back doors and we don't have doorbells already installed so no wiring to them. I don't care to subscribe to a service but even their cloud storage is fairly cheap for the year. I'm going to look at the alternatives in this thread also.

We had/have a SimpliSafe system with their doorbell. I wanted to not like it, but I ended up really liking the system and the piece of mind it gave me.
