Y'all here about the riots at North Meck today? It was crazy, couple kids got tazed and a dozen or so got arrested. Had 40-50 cops there and got dismissed early.

Good ,more disrespectful, jackass, wannabe gangster, high school kids should be tazed. I pity teachers today, they have more balls than me to go try an educate some of these kids today. A general lose of respect has been the decline of the masses in the younger generation. Used to be if someone older than me told me to do something, I didn't really question them, just figured they had been walking the earth longer than me ..so they may know what they are taking about.

thats why high school blows, you didnt have to go to school with those pussy "gangsters"..im so glad im done with it

saw it on the news tonight. i don't guess i need to wonder who it was that caused this ruckus...

Having three kids and the youngest a senior in high school now, I understand why things are out of control. Some here will agree with me, some won't. They did away with spankings. And yes, there was a fear factor there. but for the most part it worked. What we feared more than a spanking at school, was the one that waited on us at home. Daddys belt, now that was something to fear! Now days, if you spank your kids, they call it abuse.
They took prayer out of school. No matter what you believed or didn't believe, it give you an outlook of something or someone bigger and more powerful than anything we could do ourselves.
We used to recite the pledge of allegence first thing every morning. Now, I don't hear it. People burn flags and call it freedom of speech.
power to take care of issues have been taken from the teachers, the admins. so what is there to keep the kids straight?? not much. They have little reprocussions until they turn 18.
In my little world I am reminded of a movie, "lean on me" while his methods were not popular, he got the job done, and rid the school of the problems. He also demanded a lot from his teachers. He expected them to do the unheard of. He expected them to teach! Imagine that! Many times, many conferences with teachers through out my kids lives at public school, they would bring an issue to light. Something that happened2, 4 or 6 weeks ago. WHen do I find out? 2, 4 or 6 weeks later! I got so tired of hearing they did not have time to call me! rediculous!! but for the teachers who would use their phone, call my cell, my pager or email me. they got imeadiate results! My kids knew this and there were few problems.
You have to make a kid believe.

Chip, 100% agreed, and I'm pretty happy to say my kids are a great example of that.

all you get in school is supension...uh oh..I get to not go to class! yeah its major punishment

I totally agree. I am probably hrder onmy kids than 99% of parents I run into, however everywhere I go people comment how polite and respectful they are, its not about hitting or fear, its about setting clear expectations and holding them to tht consistently.

LEan on ME Hell yeah, who's gonna question a principal who walks the halls ith a bat in his hands...

i agree 100%... i get comments on my puppy all the time too... she doesnt know what a leash is but she knows my voice and she listens... i know its not a human kid but the same principles apply... its all about being stern and consistent

Ditto BW, Rob, Chip!

My son may play "tough" around his buds (generally a pretty good kid... ZERO problems at school), but the sound of leather stripping thru the beltloops snaps him right back to reality. At one time, it was daily, ...now he just needs a "reminder" every 6 months or so to walk the line!

In my day, the big ol' boat paddle wielded by the principal/teacher was *nothing* compared to my pappy's "western" belt... talk about "Fear Factor"! :D

honestly, i dont believe prayer being banned from school or physical punishment being banned from school has anything to do with the behavior. Of course I went to a private catholic school and there were never riots like this, but it prolly has more to do with parents than with 'kids today' and as far as any kind of physical punishment from teachers...im glad they got rid of that. If a teacher laid a hand on me, I would fight back. If a teacher, in the future, laid a hand on my children, damn i would fight back. However...im all for wannabe gangsters getting tazed...in fact it should be a daily ceremony.

I have to disagree with you. By taking the spanking out of schools they took away the only real weapon the Teachers had to use. The fear of spankings kept most kids inline. Iall my years I saw very few teachers actually spank any kids. I was in highschool when they banned it. Each year it got worse from then on until now. Now it has reached a point to where the teachers are scared of the kids, or of the kids parents. Parents now adays are more at fualt then any of us want to admit(I am a parent so I can say that). Discipline starts at home. You have to teach children to respect others and respect thenselves. It also has to start at a young age. Not a lot of that being done now adays. A lot of parents are to busy to teach their kids what respect is and how to give as well as gain it from others. I could go on all day about the troubles with youth today but I will stop now with this simple explanation. The government has not been a help with all the new laws reguarding abuse. They have taken that fear factor away from parents and schools alike. Fear of the belt kept me inline growing up. I only got it a few times but I deserved it everytime.

I say we should have the death penalty in public schools!

That will keep those damn kids from skippin class.

What Catholic school did you go to where there wasn't the threat of a butt whipping?

I agree with the others, the thread of a good butt whipping was a big deal in my day. I'd be glad to see that come back to schools. The only problem is when they were going to spank my kids, they'd have to stand in line behind me.

I don't remember saying prayers, but I wouldn't have a problem with it. We did the pledge every day AND we were taught what it meant, so we knew what we were saying.

90% of respect is fear. Kids lose the fear they also lose the respect. Spankings or dog shock collars would help the situation

My dad used to threaten to spank me w/ a paddle w/ a nail in it, hahaha. Of course he never did, his big-ass hand was plenty for me, but still just thinking about that alleged paddle still gives me the willies!

thats why u im glad im done with public schools.. i went to vance and i wasnt much better than north... :flipoff2:

no i have to hurry up and finish college, as of right now it looks like im on a 6 year plan  :flipoff2:

There was a time when ANY adult seeing kids doing something wrong or even "iffy" could walk up and grab them by the shirt and march them home to their parents. And NONE of them would even think about fighting back, or even talking back.

Sadly, that time is long since gone. And the fewer actual consequences there are for bad behavior, the more (and worse) the behavior will get. And when even a cop isn't safe from having a 10-year-old pull a piece on him...

There IS a flip side, though. It can be abused. I guess I was in 6th Grade when one of the teachers I got had a paddle made from must've been a 2x6, had holes drilled through almost the whole length of it, and wasn't shy about using it... apparently, he also thought it was good for a joke, except I didn't find it funny. One day he decided to tell the class he was going to hit ME with it the next day, for no particular reason at all. It was the ONLY time I ever cut a class (as opposed to playing hooky all day long)! He and the principal found me in a Boys Room and I told the Principal why I was there. No idea what if anything was done to the teacher, all I know is I never got hit by him.

When I was in 2nd grade, I changed schools. The teachers at this school were not afraid to use the paddle with holes! I was a quiet kid and didnt have alot of new friends. For some reason the teacher took advantage of this and I seemed to always get paddlings for talking. (even though I didnt have friends and I was shy...go figure) Anyway, I never told my parents that year or the following because I was afraid I would get another spanking when I got home. Finally I told them at the end of 3rd grade about all the trouble I got into. They had no idea! Mom was pissed! She switched me back to my original school and funny thing is, I never got anymore paddlings.Hmmmmm!

I dont know how I feel about paddlings in school because some teachers will take advantage of the right. I think that if it needed to be done, it should be done in front of teacher and principal. Maybe even only one faculty member in the school be allowed to give it for everyone.

However, I do believe in giving spankings at home. I have a 4 yr old and a 7 yr old and they both know it. The best thing about them knowing I will spank them, is that I dont have to very often. All I have to do is count to three with a stern voice and they stop doing whatever it is that they were doing. Maybe it is an intimidation factor, and maybe it is wrong but it works. I have two of the best behaved kids around and they still love me and they show it.

CONSISTANCY IS THE KEY!

Just my thoughts
Nathan
