Been looking for a school bus to make into a camper, shooting for something under 30' bumper to bumper.

Does anyone have any experience with titling and registering a bus in NC? I have read to get it title as an RV you need most of the conversion done before getting it titled.
Do you need a CDL to drive it home after purchase?

Yes. If I'm not mistaken you'll need at LEAST a class C license for over 16 passenger capability, until you convert it and have the DMV come out to change it's classification to an RV. Several on here have gone thru that hell with military vehicles and former commercial vehicles.

(I'm no authority by any means...I've just paid attention to a few threads with selfish interest)

I drove all three of mine home w no CDL BUT Im in TN.Me,personally,if they would let me leave in one Id be gone regardless.Mine were tagged as a passenger vehicle w a reg car tag.

Used to drive them all the timeframe auctions to the farm growing up cause we chopped em and used them for haulers. Nothing but a CIV DL.

sometimes its just easier to get forgiveness than permission.
Wasted an hour on the side of the road with an unmarked dmv officer driving a 5 ton military truck with that mentality.

It wasn't fun

As Un-fun as it may have been, 1 hour on the side of the road is considerably less trouble than getting and maintaining a CDL, and the fines grow exponentially if you have one... Unless you are going to be doing it regularly, I still go with 1-tonmudder on this,

I would just drive it home and throw it together to get it registered as an rv.

When I registered my ambulance (Siverado V3500 Based) in Virginia, I found it easier to change the registration to just a 'Van', it was considerably easier than the hurdles for an RV that requires all the living amenities, and it doesn't cost that much more in insurance to save all the hassles.
