School me on cage tubing!

Now that I have welding back in my hands, I want to add some tubing to my stock YJ rollbar.

I already know what I want to do with what components I am going to add.

My question is what can I use for tubing?

Obviously schedule 40 is way too heavy, & I'm looking for something strong, but not overkill. I don't care if it's DOM or welded seam.
I'm not planning to use my heep for psycho-banzai-gonzo-buggy maneuvers, so chrome-molybdenum isn't required.

.120 or .188 wall tubing HREW or DOM

Thanks, I had to run an errand before I could finish my post.

Does HREW= Hot Rolled Electro-Welded? or is this DOM. I know DOM stands for drawn over mandrel, & has no weld seam.

The .120 would prolly be sufficient for my needs. Sounds fairly easy to bend as well.

I also wanted to know where I might find some of this tubing used or real cheap in Rockhill S.C., or Gastonia N.C.
Anyone know if this stuff ends up in a scrapyard in limited quantities, from time to time?

I think there's one such yard in King's Mountain N.C.
& I know of a scrapyard on Celanese rd. in Rockhill, but haven't been to either yet.

I *think* its morris in kings mountain right on 74....never seen scrap DOm but they do sell it for good prices.

ive got 1.75 by .125 wall dom for $4 per foot. ive got about 500 ft. right now so let me know if you need any

Cool beans, let me add up what I need, & get back to you.
I'm cash poor at the moment, but might be able to afford some to get started.

How far away from Gastonia are you?
More than an hour?

There is a place behind bethel elementary called jackson enterprise. He keeps 1.5" .095" wall HREW in stock. If you are adding to your stock cage I would say this would suffice. Anyone disagree? I think its like $2/ft.

for a little more you can get 1.75" x .120 wall DOM How much are you really needing? Its not like you are buying 500 ft and are looking for a price break. Get the 1.75" DOM.

Dom is HREW that has undergone an extra step in the mfg. process. It is extruded through a die (drawn over a mandral) to refine its ID and OD and inturn makes it more structurally sound.

Im no expert on pipe/tube other than electrical conduit.
That said, I was under the impression that DOM didnt have a welded seam and was hot drawn as a solid circle, which greatkly increases its strength as opposed to a flat piece of platee that is heated rolled and then welded.

I may be 100% wrong, and if so just wanting to learn, but it is my understanding that it is an entirely different process to DOW than HREW

He's pretty much right, DOM does start out as hot rolled...but it's then cold worked over a mandrel (drawn over mandrel). You can still sometimes see the seam but not feel it.
The difference in strength is pretty large though.

A500/a53 pipe (NOT sprinkler pipe from lowes) is for the most part the same thing as HREW tube. And stronger if you're comparing 1.5" pipe and 1.5"x.095.

I wouldn't hesitate to use either of the three in a properly built cage (and have used all three). If it were a comp buggy I would go with 1.75x.120 DOM though just to keep from having to cut tubes out/replace them as often.

New around here, is that the school on rt.55 Between rt 274, & rt. 557?

I was really hoping to find some scrapyard stuff. I have to go to one anyway, to get some rectangular tube for a rear air tank bumper.

DOM tubing is made by rolling mild steel sheet and then welding the seam, then a mandrel is run through the center to accurately size the tubing and smooth the weld seam, The additional mechanical working adds strength to the tubing by "cold working". Also with an accurate wall thickness it is very uniform and predictible.

True seamless tubing is another matter. This is made by taking a billet of steel and piercing it with a "bullit shape" to form a tube. This is expensive tubing as you can imagine.

Thats it. If you are headed out of clover turn left right after the school and then make your first left after the school. I dont know the name of the road but its kinda like a driveway. Follow it around and this guy has a little race car shop behind his house. Hes big with the local dirt-trackers. Good luck finding a strait piece of tubing in a scrap yard. If you go to snipes on celenease give john a hard time at the scales.

I have a 77 cj5 with 304. The motor was rebuilt and the fuel pump is new. It has a holley 4 barrel. The problem is it only idles when the choke is almost closed and I have the idle set high. Eventually it will quit running and then it is difficult to get started.
What should I be looking at?
Thanks for any advice.
Where did that come from?

Maybe you need to hit it with a piece of tube, pipe will work in a pinch.

Thanks for the info, I'll stop in there one day.

I have to be a little careful about giving John a hard time, he may realize I'm a transplanted Yankee.

I'll end up paying copper prices, for some rusty steel tube!:shaking:

The price difference, is not what concerns me.

I'm interested is saving weight, on my DD, while somewhat increasing it's chance of helping me survive a slow speed rollover. The thinner wall stuff will be OK for this, even a few extra feet in the right places will help a lot.

While my skull has been fractured once, it's generally pretty tough. It took a seriously hard hit to some pavement to do that. Besides, no brain- no pain!
