Our friend, Scott Fields, of UORTC and Big Creek has been diagnosed with Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

The links below will give you all the information you need to know:

Peritoneal Mesothelioma: Causes, Treatment & Survival Rates

Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation

Scott was diagnosed in early January 2018 after experiencing severe abdominal pain and swelling during December 2017. For the first few weeks, Scott was traveling to Greensboro, NC for treatment at Wesley Long Cancer Center where they would drain the fluid buildup in his abdomen weekly.

In March he began chemotherapy treatment at the Cancer Center, a 10 hour procedure every third week, that left him extremely sick and incapacitated for several days afterward. He is being treated by Dr Bradley Sherrill at Wesley Long. He has also seen Dr Edward Levine, at Baptist in Winston Salem, who is one of the best Peritoneal Mesothelioma surgeons in the country.

This is an extremely rare form of cancer with around 500 diagnosed yearly and only around 100 surgeries done annually. After his last Chemo treatment Scott had a much rougher time that usual with intense sickness and pain and was admitted to Wesley Long Hospital on Thursday, April 12, 2018, where a CAT scan showed a blockage in his abdomen. He will be undergoing surgery this week to determine what is going on and what treatment options are available.

Please do not phone Scott at this time as he is intubated and unable to talk comfortably. Please lift up Scott and his family in your prayers during this stressful and uncertain time. With Scott in Greensboro this poses some serious care, communication and visitation problems. His wife and daughter are in Thomasville and his son is in school at App St.

I will provide updates as soon as possible!

Damn. Scott and his family are in my prayers.
Let me know if we can help in any way.

Thank you, JC, for letting us know. Our thoughts are with Scott and his family.

Prayers for the entire family, it breaks my heart to see Scott go through this, he has done so much for me and for the Wheeling community. One of the most giving people I have ever met in my life.

We love you Scott, your brothers in the Carolina Trail Blazers have got your back anything you need let us know!

Best of luck to Scott and his family.

I went by and saw Scott today. He is in good spirits and in less pain.
They have adjusted the drain tube so he can talk more comfortably but when the vacuum pump is hooked up he's in a lot more pain.
We walked a couple of laps on his floor with him rolling his IV along.
They were in the process of loading him up with contrast dyes so they can do some GI imaging later this evening.
They don't know exactly what is causing the blockage yet but he's been there a week without eating, drinking and going to the bathroom, just ice chips.
Also no prognosis as to when they may get a handle on what's wrong, when he might have surgery or go home.
He's handling it better than I think I would.

Thanks @J.C. for the updates. I know he needs all the prayers he can get. Praying for Scott and the family along with the doctors and staff to find the problem and cure Scott.

Prayers Sent to our Brother Scott & his Family.
