Due to recent events in having cameras installed at the house. I've spoken to 1 company and they have a 1080p HD 4 camera system with night vision DVR and all that jazz. Cost is around $1600 complete. I'll call at least 1 more company but does this sound about right? Anyone here do that kind of work?

Wow.... That's high. You can buy just as good of a system with more cameras for half that price if you're willing to install it yourself. Most are wireless and easy to install... I don't do it professionally but I've put in a few wired and wireless systems. It's not hard.

I'll come help you install..

Havent seen him around in a bit but @burrellsjeep and I were in the industry together 10+ years ago. I got out but he still is.

They're real handy. You can watch instant replays of people stealing your shit.

most popular use of ours?

Did I shut the garage door?

I just installed a 1080p 4 camera system for my cousin a couple weeks ago. He ordered it from amazon for around $450. All the wires come pre-made so the install is pretty straight forward. I also installed a 720p 4 camera system at my house around the same time for $300. The brand name is Amcrest, both systems came from Amazon. Both systems have pretty good quality camera images. We have them setup where we can view the cameras on our cell phones anywhere we are at as long as we have cell service or WiFi.

I investigated a security system too back in December after some Christmas decoration vandalism. We did not end up pulling the trigger on one yet. One thing I did discover is that most of the wireless cameras can only be so far (350-450'?) from the receiver.

Ebay camera system is something like $150 with 4 cameras that have real good quality video and can add 4 more cameras too, you have to install at hard drive in them to record. You can watch from a app on your phone when you aren't home.

I did the cheap ebay thing after we got broke into 2-3 years ago. No complaints. I think the 11x17 metal sign at the front doorstep reading "SECURITY CAMERAS IN USE" is my biggest theft deterrent probably even without the cameras.

Had mine professionally set up with an IP address and have the system locked up in my well house. I can monitor on my phone at any time.

Busted the power company knocking down my mailbox so it's paid $50 back so far. I hope I never get broke back into and that's all it pays actually.

On the wireless versions, how are they powered? I guess you could set it up to monitor through your television? My wife is wanting something similar, we have a new neighbor moving in and you can't tell if it is a car in our drive or in theirs without going to look out the back door.

So w/ 4 cameras, where do you guys choose to point them? I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on something similar too. I can think of a lot more than 4 places that would be ideal.

Pretty basic.
Driveway left. Driveway right. (Circle drive)
Then - Front door. Back door.

Having one inside like the CPI Security commercial to me is just plain eerie when you get all you need coming in and out of the doors. You can't capture every angle inside anyways without 50 cameras.

I can capture everything with 4 cameras. all windows, doors and driveway.

Can you read a license plate?

Ah yes... I have a good interior security camera story. That's garage material though.

This isn't Name That Tune

I have four exterior and 2 interior.

One towards covering front porch and front doors to garage.
One covering driveway and some of the road.
One looking at back porch.
One towards back of garage (and sketchy access road)

The two inside are cpi cameras and I hate them. Wife says they stay though. They are aimed at front and rear entry.

Originally bought the samsung kit, but didn't realize how bad the video and night vision was until I hooked up a camera that was given to me. Ended up replacing the other 3 to match. More led lights and lots more detail.
