Selling things on NC4X4

OK so here's my issue. I try to buy and sell stuff. In my opinion I try to buy stuff used in order to not pay "new" prices for thing's. In this sport you never get what you have into something. That's just the way it is. But I know others want you to give it away. I think there is a happy medium somewhere and I try to be reasonable. I know there are several items that are for sale right now on NC4x4 that are priced higher than new.

I know when I sold my Jeep I took a bath on it. I know exaclty what I had into it and go much less than that. I did make money on my truck and trailer though (unless you include my labor). But I believe I got a fair price both ways.

I have 2 quotes below from a for sale thread. I've deleted the names on purpose as I have no knowledge of what these individuals are selling. They were in someone elses for sale thread.
"hahaha.....im getting soooooo tired of NC4x4 since I been trying to sell my yota and parts because of tire kickers like that......"

I agree there are alot of people just tire kicking but your gotta expect some of that. I always ask somebody first if they are a serious buyer or not.

"Yep! People want to steal stuff from you a lot of the time. You get what you pay for!"
It holds true that you get what you pay for, but not everything priced high is high quality.

These 2 comments were a little agrivating to me but I may be off base some.

Thoughts?

in first..

some stuff is too high in my broke assed opinion, that being said i will not lowball sombody i think that is kind of an insult, but i will offer what i am am willing pay and what i consider to be fair to the seller and when agreed upon the price that is what i pay when said item is as described no more negotiating the price..

beh, people bitch, people moan.

I'd rather it this way than it possibly be a 'nazi4x4.com' where there's too many rules/protocol

Ok I will put on my "im an asshole just like ron hat:)"......
I price my stuff for what I want out of. Sometimes I sell new items at near new price because that what they are, new. I hate to haggle and price it for what I will sell it for, don't think my price is right, don't buy it. Do I price my used stuff for new price? No........

Yeah I have thoughts......what is your point in posting this thread?? Then post a comment I said about a guy I have dealt with about tire kicking me for a month and reason I posted that is to tell a friend on here not to waste his time......

Through my years on here of wheeling and dealing after parting my truck out and dealing with ALOT of per say"idiots" you wont have to worry about me doing that again..... it has gotten bad on here to me,not sure if its just abunch of kids or what just gets old.... Ofcourse if you ask brand new prices for partsthat are years old well thats just dumb....but when you ask half prices for used parts and ppl try to talk you into half of that it just gets old....

But what if your "fair" price is what somebody considers a "low ball"? I purposely started high on my truck knowing that it would be negotiated down. I wasn't insulted by a lower number. I really can't affect someone else's feelings towards me. If they get mad it's their problem not mine. I really am only concerned about my money and what I will pay for something. And for the most part I want it to be as little as possible. Sometimes I may help someone out, but not usually.

Maybe we should have a "Pot Stirring" smiley?

I can understand your thoughts and frustration. My point is to just spur some constructive conversation and have people think a little. That's it. No insults to anybody intended.

Every transaction here on NC4x4 I have done has been great. Nothing at all like the maroons on CL.

My rule is never buy anything for more than 50% of new cost. There are very, very few exceptions to this rule. You don't know the installation/usage history of the item, manufacturer's warranties are often void -- only good for the original purchaser (i.e. Nikon). I price likewise when selling. (If I also post something on CL, it's usually 30-50% higher than the price I put here at NC4x4 and other forums.)

I haven't had any tirekickers on stuff I have sold...I try and price more than fairly, describe it fully (sometimes pointing out more flaws and negative points than good), and say up front if price is firm or negotiable.

Far better than your other options...craigslist and ebay. One person's definition of "low-balling" is different than another's. I see people get things dirt cheap all of the time...I also see people sell shit for way over what it should have gone for. Are they wrong?

Here is my (ass hat) take..
If I am selling something I want every penny I can get for it. If you are willing to pay me more than new, I'll gladly take it.
When I am buying something I want it for as cheap as possible, if you will give it away I will take it.

Ive bought no less than 6 vehicles off this site, and I can not tell you how many parts..Ive sold 9 vehicles here and plenty of parts, even sold some kids toys once.

But the thing to keep in mind is this is a buyers market. Some stuff I would buy (even if its not exactly what I want) for the right price. So if someone bumps their thread more than a few times the deal maker in my head goes off and says..hey I have x in cash laying around maybe i can buy that and flip it and make a few dollars....and i do occasionally. I have also had people offer me less than half my asking price...you can not offend me by offering to give me cash, if its not enough ill say so. But ill never be offended.

I have sold a lot of stuff on here, and bought alot of stuff. I've never had any bad dealings, I have had quite a few tire kickers, but mostly from cross listing items here and craigslist, and I figure its mostly craigslist folks.

I will often hold items for people on NC4x4, just based on reputation or if I have met them on the trails etc... I will often give friends and people I have met on the trails a better price on things.

As far as buying and selling, I love this site, compared to other sites I have tried to sell things on, this site brings results, and I don't get flooded with spam, bullshit emails, and I dont get a bunch of idiots asking me something I said 3x in the ad. Anything I want sold, I ask friends first, then I post on NC4x4, after a few days on here, I will throw it on Clist.

It never ceases to amaze me at how many posts on here and Craigslist (especially) have insanely inflated prices. I've seen people asking $3500+ for vehicles from the mid 80's. Now that's fine if the vehicle has been restored or is still in really good shape (or was a really desirable car back then!), but for the most part these are clapped out stuff that needs a bunch of work. I think people have lost touch with the fact that vehicles with VERY rare exception are NOT INVESTMENTS. Real estate is barely in "investment" anymore thanks to the current market. I've seen people that bought foreclosed houses for pennies on the dollar and STILL can't get their money back.

That being said, just because you have $10,000 wrapped up in your Jeep, truck, car, Hooptie-a$$ Donk or whatever you are selling doesn't mean it's worth that. Throwing a $1000 set of rims on a $300 car doesn't make your "investment" anymore sound. It's still a piece of crap with nice rims.

But what if your "fair" price is what somebody considers a "low ball"? I purposely started high on my truck knowing that it would be negotiated down. I wasn't insulted by a lower number. then screw em!!!!! i figure half of the asking price or less is lowball, that is my standard for lowball and my offer always has room for a counter offer but i know what i am willing to pay before i make an offer and i have the monies in hand!! had a guy once (not on here) fuss b/c i said i had X amount of hundred dollar bills it was a weekend so i hit the ATM and got him a big ole pile of 20s "well you said $100s and I hate counting 20s" almost made me say well don't then and riding on but i did say $100s so i guess it was my fault haha! all that said I have met some nice people on here and got some really good deals!!!!!

Craigslist and its populace are weird, so I will leave it out of the discussion.

If I'm selling something, I'll generally list it with one of three suffixes (suffi?)
1. OBO. Or best offer. Throw an offer out there. I may say no, but I won't get offended. I will likely counteroffer. Whoever gives me the best offer gets it. If its day 1 and you are the first to offer me something, you may get it for half price. If the item offers me more use than your cash, I'll keep it. Offers can be trades, but cash is king.
2. Firm, cash only, no trades. This is self explanatory. My price is firm, I will only accept cash, and I do not want any trades. Sure if I'm asking $100 and you offer me $98, I'll probably take it, but settle that beforehand, don't waste my time when you show up to offer $75. And don't try to trade me something unless its of SIGNIFICANTLY more value, which would be stupid anyway because then you could just sell it for cheap, buy my stuff, and have cash left over.
3. Trades considered. The door is open. Offer me $50 and a pet turtle. Don't lowball me unless there is a trade item, in which case, have at it.

And unfortunately, nothing is sold until there is cash or paperwork in hand. 10 years ago, people on this forum could rely on an "I'll take it". 10 years ago, Paypal wasn't as prevalent, and there were probably 1/50th of the members that there are now. If its someone I know personally, I will hold an item, but I've been left holding the item too many times by people who never showed up.

The biggest thing for me is communication. If you say you're coming to get something, come and get it. If you get a flat along the way, let me know. If you get halfway here and change your mind, let me know. I'm very understanding if I know whats going on, it allows me to set expectations. I don't want to waste my saturday morning waiting on the 10am guy who shows up at 7pm saturday night because his buddy called and wanted to go out on the lake. Life throws things at you, so go to the lake, but take the time and have the respect to let me know so that I can go to the lake with my buddy too.

X2.

I typically price things at what i feel they are worth. I am not offended at a price someone throws me and i will counter it. I am reasonable and sometimes in a dealing mood, so ya never know.

The worth of some type of possesion or property ( house, land, car, truck , parts or tools) is what someone is willing to pay today.

Meh..

I thought this was gonna get good. This thread sucks..

Thank you Ron, if she had some bacon between tits the picture would be perfect...

I had to deal with a clown form another forum just the other day. Was supposed to meet him for a deal and never heard anything from him. No I cant make it no nothing. So 15 min after the meet time I left. He texts me like 4 hours later saying he was sick or some crap. Then later on in my for sale ad he goes and replies saying that a particular item was his when another member asked about it. You got to be kidding me!

Everybody wants a deal. I am going to struggle to sell my car at kbb because of that. Over the past few years I know I have seen the prices and demand for parts really slack off. A couple of years ago an axle wouldnt last long on hear, now they will sit unsold for a while.

To the OP that's why there shiuldn't be chit-chat in for sale ads. It just makes sellers mad. Just like Joe Dirt looking through his Autotrader, they have something to say about everything in there whether it is useful them or not.

my biggest gripe is people listing items for sale and then never getting back to you. Or 3-4 weeks later reply then give you a attitude that you bought parts elsewhere.

That and they beat you down on price then say "OK I'll take it, but I won't have the money for two weeks. And can you deliver 70 miles away for free?"
