[Sep 21, 2013] Uwharrie National Forest OHV Trail Work Day; Dinner provided by CNC4X4 (Eldorado, NC)

Never been known to turn down some good grub. Thanks for doing this for us.

I am in for the grub!!

I know the plan is to split into 3 different groups and attack the issues with the different teams. One team up Daniel to work the front side with guardrail , one team to start down Dutch John on the log bridges, and a final small group to do the backhoe stuff on Wolf Den and Dutch John.

ONSC is most likely just me.

Updated email from the forrest service...
Project Area 1: On Daniel Trail we’ll installing guardrail at the illegal ATV and dirt bike trail that
you have blocked off several times with logs and slash. We’ll be putting the posts in with hand
augers unless anyone / club would have a tractor or bobcat with an auger there that weekend.
I don’t know if it would be safe to take a tractor or bobcat there.
There are 2 pieces of guardrail & posts up there right next to the 2nd
ledge. I would like us to
reuse the posts that are there and reinstall the guardrail that is on the downhill side of the trail
below the 2nd
ledge. I would like to have you move the existing guardrail that is on the uphill
side of the trail below the 2nd
ledge and take it across to the downhill side where one guardrail
was cut. At the illegal ATV trail I’d like you to install two 25 ft long pieces and you’d only need 3
posts for that section.
At the 2nd
ledge move Winch in some dead and down logs to replace this piece of guardrail on
the uphill sid of the trail and I’ll also have the carsonite signs and the carsonite pounder for you
to use to install “No Vehicles …” signs at the guardrail locations & where you’ve slashed in or
blocked off below the 2nd
ledge.
This means that you’d need 3 posts & 2 long rails at the illegal ATV trail & 2 no vehicle signs
there. At the 2nd
ledge area move the 25 ft piece of guard rail from the uphill side to the
downhill side of the trail and reuse the 2 posts that are already there at the 2nd
ledge. Then
slash in the uphill side of the trail where you’ve removed the old guardrail. Put a no vehicle
sign behind this guardrail & put one sign behind the slash. You’d have 4 “No Vehicle” Signs to
put up.
The guardrail and posts will be at Cotton Place Trailhead to haul up to the site. I’ll give crew
signs & carsonite pounder when we meet at Uwharrie Hunt Camp on Saturday. To get the
guardrail and posts to that section we’ll need trucks / jeeps that can haul them up to this
spot. Then slash in the trail behind the guardrail as much as you can with dead and down
trees in the area.
Project Area 2: The loader that you have been getting worked on is ready for this work day
and an equipment operator is lined up to work with us. There are 3 projects that I’m hoping
we’ll accomplish with the loader that day. 1. Smooth out the rocky spot on the Wolf Den Trail
where the Falls Dam Trail intersects with it. It’s getting too pronounced at both rocky spots
there that people are going around it. 2. Install guardrail & No Vehicle signs on the Bates Horse
Trail at this intersection where ATV’s are illegally going up the horse trail, 3. On Wolf Den trail
going from the rocky area toward Dutch John Trail there is a clay section that is rutted and
people were driving out of the tail ditch. It has been blocked but we’ll use the loader to fix that
trail and tail ditch in that section similar to what we’ll do on the Falls Dam Trail section. We’ll
re-block the illegal bypass with the slash.
4. On Falls Dam Trail in the steep clay section that comes down from Forest Road 516 and then
intersects with the Wolf Den Trail we’re going to use the loader to pull the soil in from the sides
& tail ditches to build up the trail tread again, fill in the ruts and then use the rock that is at the
top of the trail to put on the trail tread surface to improve the trail tread. Also we’ll re-armor the creek that is at the bottom of the hill. We may also use some of additional material from
here to fix the rocky area on Wolf Den Trail. We’ll also have him soften or lower the berm parts
of the rolling dips that are too pronounced and steep. I’d like folks there to help block off the
illegal bypasses by slashing them in.
Project Area 3: Repair & dismantle the log crossings on Dutch John Trail. I have flagged 4 log
crossings on Dutch John Trail with the numbers starting at 1 at the Slab Pile end of the trail. I
would suggest that the crew starts from the Wolf Den end of the trail and take cable from those
log crossings to use at the last 2 crossings. Here is what I’d like the crew to do at each site.
Site 1 – Log crossing closest to Slab Pile Trail – Replace 1 broken log and move cable on the
downstream side of crossing to a new anchor tree that is flagged that is closer to the stream.
Move the boulder with winches or rock bars up stream about 2 to 3 ft to get it out of the way.
Then realign the logs and tighten both cables. There is an armored crossing just around the
corner that needs to have more rock put in it (see the flagging on site). Use rocks from the
creek and locally from the areas next to the trail to armor this area where the ATVs are going
around the tree there. There are 4 new logs next to site 1 to use at 1 & 2.
Site 2 – Log crossing going back toward Wolf Den Trail at the bottom of the rocky area next to
guardrail – Replace or add 3 logs here and realign and tighten cables.
Site 3 – Log crossing that is long and has never really worked well. Take log crossing apart
and save the cable & good logs. Reuse good cables & clamps at Sites 1 & 2 if needed. Armor
crossing with rock from the local area – from the trail tread and hillside that is to the north and
west of this section. Make this a rocky ford. Keep the good logs and cable. Take the good logs
out to the Falls Dam Trailhead and put them in the grassy corner of the trailhead. Toss the bad
logs out into the woods off the trail as best as possible. Whatever cable isn’t reused at sites 1 &
2 can also be brought out to the Falls Dam Trailhead.
Site 4 – Log crossing that is on the first big crossing when coming from the Wolf Den Trail end.
Take the log crossing apart just like # 3 above. Log crossing that is long and has never really
worked well. Take log crossing apart and save the cable & good logs. Reuse good cables &
clamps at Sites 1 & 2 if needed. Make this a rocky ford. Keep the good logs and cable. Take
the good logs out to the Falls Dam Trailhead and put them in the grassy corner of the trailhead.
Toss the bad logs out into the woods off the trail as best as possible. Whatever cable isn’t
reused at sites 1 & 2 can also be brought out to the Falls Dam Trailhead.
I hope this will all make sense when we meet at Uwharrie Hunt Camp at 9 am on Saturday.Terry

Thanks for the update, Snappy! CB4x4 will have 8 there. We could stand to have about 4 more help us and 1 extra vehicle with a winch. Otherwise, I think we will have it covered. I think we can get all 4 bridges taken care of but doubt we will have enough time to drag the old logs out. Push comes to shove, we can get them stacked up out of the way for now.

I need a group to help step up on the Daniel trail, and one or 2 with a vechile to run with the loader. Any one up for that?

Thanks to a 28 volunteers that can out today! They got all 4 bridges fixed or removed on Dutch John, fixed one area of wash out on wolfs den, placed 2 links of guard rail to block off the horse trails, broke up 2 areas of rocks, worked on the creek crossing going up falls dam, got 2 pieces of gaurd rail up on Daniel..... All followed up with some great grub from Cnc!

We did blow a hydro line on the loader or we could have done more... All in all a great work day!!!

Big shout out to CNC4x4 for the grub and the help on the trails, same for the Bronco club and all the others out there today. Sorry if i do not know all the clubs that came out as i was having a blast on the loader.

Thanks again everyone.

Glad you guys enjoyed the food as it was well deserved after what I felt like was a very successful workday! That in large part I feel like was due to the well organized approach of having the plan of attack laid out. Then assigning each task to a group and giving them "ownership" of completing their task meant a very efficient early mornig meeting allowing everyone to get out on the trails to begin work early. Enjoyed the day and thanks to everyone who came out to lend a hand to make it a success.

This year has gone a lot better than years past for getting our assignments and hitting the trails faster. Thanks to someone stepping up.

i enjoyed the heck out of it!! been a while since ive been able to come up. CNC did one heck of a job with the food!!!! made the day worth it! glad we (CB4x4) could be there to help out. we're trying to get more bronco folks involved. Just holler if any of you need me, Chuck

Snappy deserves a huge thank you. Through his efforts (and I am sure a couple others that I don't know about) the day was planned out and we got a lot accomplished. Through his planning we were able to split into three groups and complete many different projects. When people donate their time to work on the trail they want to work and get something accomplished- we definitely did that at this workday.

Thanks again Snappy!!
