Share the road........sort of

OK, quick rant here. I get the whole "share the road" thing with the bikes. I normally have no issues with most of the bikes, will give them all the space they need, etc.

Today was just ridiculous though. I went up to take a load of stuff up to the new house right after church. Ran into a few bikes going up, no big deal. They gave me space to get by and I likewise gave them plenty of space as I passed. On the way home, totally different story. I ran into the full Tour de France taking up the entire road. Literally no way to pass without going in the other lane completely, and they were in a pack that was probably 100ft long. I got stuck behind this pack (and behind a Lamborghini Gallardo who was VERY MUCH not pleased) for probably 5+ miles. They were going 15-20mph on a road that is 45-55 mph. Here I am in a big pickup truck pulling a 16' flatbed trailer trying to quickly pass 100' of bikes. The line behind me was probably a mile long at this point. It was just stupid.

So damn annoying.

Lee, I'm sure you feel my pain, you've been dealing with this area a lot longer than I have. I haven't even moved in yet and I am already annoyed beyond belief.

What are the rules of R O W when a crowd of bicyclers are in a whole lane pack, 100s of feet long, on a straight 2 lane county rd. and I turn left well infront and heading towards them? This happened near RTP years ago and a car pulled into my lane to pass the bike parade from behind. I continued towards the head-on collision w the guy in my lane and accelerated as normal, the other driver kept comming too and the cyclers were unaware. As we met I hit the shoulder and passed the car about 35mph w my horn blaring for 5+ seconds as he finally slammed on the brakes and the road hogs ducked and jived. The A-hole in the car in my lane should have stopped or slowed and got back in his lane IMO.

Common courtesy goes a long way. You were clearly involved in a "lane swap". You were supposed to pull in the other lane in front of the cyclists and let the other car pass in your lane, then make the cyclists come to a complete stop before getting back into your proper lane.

RUFKNKIDNGME? I've seen what happens when a crowd of bikers have to stop quick while watching the stupid TDF, they sure don't want to leave the pavement w the tiny tires they run. I think common courtesy would be the bikers pulling over occasionally ( a mile or so ) to let motorvehicles pass like the old "slow vehicle turnouts" that used to be common on roads in the country around farmland and tractors or in the mountains.

Re read Matt's post...you will laugh

.............sarcasm? awesome! and I did'nt get it :eek:ops: :D .............I was already passing bikers in this long parade when the oncomming driver pulled into my lane to pass them . He had the option of braking and returning to his lane but continued towards me, maybe he could'nt see how long the parade of riders was when he pulled out, but that was not MY problem IMO so we played chicken.

This has become a big problem over near my parents in the RTP. I am sure someone will tell me I am wrong but they are annoying. Last time I came up to a big group I was in my Chevelle,468 BBC with a 4 speed muncie and open pipes. I pushed in the clutch and settled to a coast behind them.We coasted like that for what seemed like 2-3 miles, I barely needed any gas in 4th gear to keep the car moving at their speed. Finally we came to a big straight away and I pulled the trans down into 2 gear and Hammered it. The God's of Thunder Spanked the Road with an ear deafening roar from Thor's Hammer and I went around them. 100+ decibels screamed from my engine, scaring one of the bikers, he fumbled and went down, taking several others with him. They were so impressed several of them saluted me to tell me I was #1 . Fuggin Awesome.

they suck, especially on sundays. it really pisses me off when i have a tee time and can't get around them.
I almost ran into a group of them right at the curve by the church before your place couple of years ago for that cook out. Imagine trying to stop the wrangler towing a Pop Up Camper before I bowling balled through 10 bikers. I'd give it a Pucker Factor of like 7 .

I get annoyed when 2 peddlers want to ride side by side while they chit chat and hold up traffic on 2 lane roads. There are many, many less traveled roads they can ride w/o holding up traffic but they seem to sometimes prefer busy roads and rush hour to seemingly flaunt their priveliges. That and the ones that stay in the lane when they have room to move over or a bike lane, I guess they're worried about popping a tire in the road debris if they cross the white line when there's 5 or more ft. of asphalt to the right of it to the shoulder?

I'm hesitant to post in this thread so I'm going to keep it brief.

Bicycles are defined as vehicles by NC law and share the same privileges and responsibilities as motor vehicles. Admittedly, that is something I struggle with.

My thoughts on this are the same as pedestrians who chat on their cell phones without looking either way at a stop light. You might be the pedestrian and have the absolute " Right of Way" , if you step out in front of a garbage truck you are road grease. Period. That's what I refer to as " dead right " You might have had the right of way and be entitled to enter the intersection but you weren't smart enough to look both ways before you did.

When I pass a group of road hogging bikers I pull up beside them as slow as possible then romp on my diesel as hard as I can to smoke them out as best as I can with an automatic on the other hand if they are courteous so am i

Now i could be wrong here.

But do the laws not say that bicycles have the first 24 inches of the road as seen from the right side of the road ? They used to pull this type of crap on my road here and i flagged them down one day and gave them all a copy of the law as it was back then , never have had a problem on this road again. Am on my phone right now so searching to see if it still is, is too much of a pain.

And i ride a road bike down here on the roads around here. I stay in the 24 inch rule as i knew it back in the year.

the road he is referring to is considered a bike route (it has signs that have pic of bike with route number). there is plenty of room to the right side of the white line(for most of the road) for bikes, if they were riding single file, they instead insist on going 4-5 abreast and really clog shit up.
when i'm in the blazer i really want to use it as a plunger and clear things out. i really need to hook up the train horns, that will make them move.

Is it legal for them to ride 2, 3, 4, or 5 wide then in a pack of 100 at 15mph taking up the entire lane? I ride on the road some myself, but I keep it to back roads with low traffic volume, and always ride single file as far to the right as possible.

The law needs to change.

Or they should be paying some sort of hi-way taxes like the rest of the users.

Same deal with the DUI scooters, they should have to pay for tags if they want to use the paved roads.

I met a guy who had a set of real train horns in the bed of his lifted V10 Ford. He talked about fabbing them on his kitchen table, he went to test the setup and it broke the the glass in the kitchen windows  He was from Florida and said he liked to toot his horns at all the slow peeps who stopped at RxR crossings when trains were'nt comming and the gates were up. Mounted in the bed the sound was earth shaking, he hit it for 1 sec at a friends house in a condo community in Cary and about 5 car alarms went off!!! I think it would make bikers move over, hell it would probly make their bowels move too!!

I have been saying that for years about the DUI scooters. They should have at the minimum insurance, and pay road taxes.

I believe the proper term is "DUI-cycle"

:flipoff2:

My main issue with these tour de France fuckers are they arnt going. Anywhere they can choose what roads to cruise around on.
But they always pick busy roads with high speed limits to ride, its usually 30 to 40 in a group riding 3 wide.

My point is if you are riding to ride they shouldn't be allowed on any road with speedlimit over 25

Ill share the road when they let Jeeps ride three wide and go 25 under the speed limit
