Side X sides keep getting bigger, more powerful, and more expensive

I just took a look at the Can-Am Maverick X3 on their website and was shocked at how they continue to push side X sides to be bigger, more powerful, and more expensive. 102" wheelbase (my Sami is 82", LOL), 72" wide, 154hp, 24" of wheel travel, and almost $30,000 by the time you add some doors and a winch. Very impressive though.

Sounds exactly like the pick up truck market to me. Who would have thought 600 lbft wouldn't be enough? Then 700 then 800:driver: I feel like they have to stop at some point.

Yeah, it's hard for me to believe there is a huge market for this. Almost a full-on race car. How many people have that kind of $$ to drop on a vehicle that is really designed for areas that most of us aren't even close to?

Bigger wheelbase and track width than a TJ. More expensive, and almost as much HP.

Don't forget 900, they crossed that threshold for 2017.

Which brings up the question in my mind, at what point does a side X side just become a '4wd buggy with fully independent suspension'?

Most every series I race (enduro, harescramble etc...) have been adding SXS classes and the response has been huge so far. It doesn't surprise me they're selling them with as many $10k+ dirt bikes that people buy for use by only one person. I could see jumping into racing one if my body gets too worn out for the bike.

Point me in the direction of the next race please.

I have a brand new turbo rzr, and it is mind blowing how well they perform. They are as quick as most ultra4 cars, have better suspension, and way better brakes. All for 1/4-1/3 of the cost of a used ultra4, and you can take them a lot more places.

Greg, I'll let you take mine for a spin, and you will likely be shopping for one.

That x3 is one bad machine I'll never be able to afford one but it's a straight up store bought buggy anybody that can afford it have fun

Mideast or GNCC. The VXCS series we run has SXS events as well.

Feel free to give it a go. I plan on running most of the southeast GNCC's next season. SXS's go on Saturday so I'm down to pit for you. Those guys were hauling ass through the woods at Camp Coker.

why not a $500 beater CJ3A and a V8 ...
because right now, 4wd trucks are being frowned on. the places to drive 4x4s are dwindling to almost nothing while the places to ride a SxS is increasing.

ive debated selling out and getting one. The wife wants a 4 wheeler anyway, so one for her and one for me, i might as well spend the cash on a SxS. Can AM is about twice the price of Hondas SxSs and i could get the 4 passenger for what i'd spend on 2 four wheelers.

k, then leave the 4cyl in it, take off the windshield and fenders = side by side

I have Yamaha Rhino hood/fenders to do this same idea with a zuk. Make a cheap vehicle look like a sxs.

Haven't we been down this road before? And didn't we figure out that even with the coolest utv parts we still couldn't beat on golf carts as hard as we could big trucks?

Haha, yes! But the turbo rzr is supposed to have stronger parts on it! And Alex is taking care of the weak links as we speak.

Just can't drive it in the rocks like an ultra4, figured that out at Harlan at 2am on lower damnation.

When you can finance for 96 months, $350 a month doesn't' SOUND so scary

^^^^This is the answer right here. Finance away for your toys. No one will finance you to build out a pickup or Jeep. Of course, when you break said toy now you are still making payments on it. :shaking:

Everything has a weak link. Comparing a UTV to a buggy isn't fair. The buggy may have an enormous edge in the rocks but a UTV will walk away from a buggy in the desert.

The reality is that the SxSs are more capable than ever before and will walk the dog on a U4 in the desert, they are no longer the golf cart class. We're running in the 90mph range with 24+ inches of wheel travel in the desert. The class has the capabilites of a 10 car. For people that want to go fast on this site but don't want a U4 buggy, the UTVS are the way to go.
