So, I was reading this article about In-N-Out and I knew it was a west coast thing and there are none anywhere near here or a White Castle, So its got me really craving a burger or something alike that we might have to drive a bit for from High Point.
The wife and I usually go out to eat on Saturday nights and we are just tired of eating the same thing all the time.
I am not looking for anything fancy or even like a sit down place...just something that is cool and has a good atmosphere with some killer food.
Really craving White Castle (I know that I can buy the ones in the grocery store....I don't want that) so I am looking for a cool place like that, where I can get something that I normally can't get around here.... Not looking to drive 2+ hours, but not against driving out a ways to get something good.
Thought about getting a Taco pizza from Bill's Pizza -
I guess I have also been watching a bit too many episodes of DDD.
Any ideas? I know some of you know where the good spots are!

Not really a slider style, but we finally ate at Nick's Hamburgers in Welcome and it REALLY hit the spot for a good freshly made juicy burger. Really had the old fashioned feel of a little mom and pop burger joint.

Krystal burgers, but you'd have to drive to Gaffney. Seems like they used to be all over the place.

But seriously, how does White Castle or in-and-out have a good atmosphere or unique food? Save a bunch of time and go to your local BK in the hood :D

Never been inside an In-N-Out or White Castle, so I can't comment on the atmosphere, but would love to try them both.
BK sucks!

In-n-out is the west coast equivalent of Cookout. Limited area due to an insistence on fresh food. The beef is never frozen, so they won't have a store outside of a day's drive from the distribution center. It's great, I'd love to have one here, but it's more the culture than the food. Cookout is almost as good, plenty cheap, and has almost the same standard of freshness. Plus, you can get a corn dog as a side to your burger!

I asked for mayo on my burger at In-n-out. Dude behind the counter couldn't process it mentally. It's apparently not something they do there. I thought he was going to have to call a manager over to clear his confusion!

Agreed, in-n-out is west coast cookout--only with a very very limited menu and white castle is the northerner's Krystal. Why not go somewhere that's not a chain? I don't know what's in high point but I can think of a lot better restaurants to get burgers than any of those places. Find somewhere that mixes and grinds their own beef.

Not far from your work is a great little place called Mikael's Cafe. It's on Beechwood off of Piedmont Pkwy. Cheap and good. It's on the backside if the building with PIP printing.

Agreed. I travel to Canada pretty regularly for work, and my goal is to eat somewhere different every meal. I've been to some really odd places, and some really neat places, and almost always walk away pleased with my decision. All the chains are so similar that it really doesn't matter which you go to.

In Canada, I find www.tripadvisor.com to generally have excellent info, but for whatever reason, it's hit or miss for US stuff. Urbanspoon is usually pretty good too. Just look through the top 20 or so and pick from the type of food you're looking for.
A quick search on Tripadvisor brought up 3 burger places in the top 15 restaurants:

Big burger spot is alright food, I dunno if I'd want to spend a Saturday night there. I'm talking about the one on hornaday/guilford college rd just south of 40... Not much atmosphere there.

This. Nicks has the best burgers that I have had in town. It has been excellent every time I have been there.

Krystal Burger would be the local equivalent. Up until a few years ago they were headquartered in Chatanooga. I think they moved to Atlanta now though. It looks like there is only a single one in NC....and somehow it's in West Murphy?!

I've had both In-n-Out and White Castle. Krystal is just as good as White Castle, but nothing tops IN-n-Out. It's the iconic 50's era drive through and the recipe literally hasn't changed, either has the cooking techniques.

The closest you'll get to In-n-Out in NC is a Five Guys or Cook Out.

Now what do I miss.... Carls Jr and Jack In the Box.

Hardees and Carls JR are the same restaurant and JITB is all around charlote

Hardees is a far cry from Carls Jr. Different burgers and meal options completely. But I do like some greasy Hardees breakfast. We need a Jack In the Box here in Raleigh...

Check out Big Eds chicken pit next bowling alley across from Lowes. Great wings and chopped chix sandwich.

Krystal really as good as white castle? I really want to somewhere after a night of drinking when Im starving and just eat...I want to be as good as Harold and Kumar say it is :)

Seems the closest Krystal Burger is in Gaffney, SC (105 mi. away)

I think Cookout and Five guys have some damn good cheap(er) burgers.

Five guys is awesome, but I just want to try something different. I can go to Five Guys any day.

How is Jack in The Box? Never been there.

It' just fast food. Nothing special.
I wish I had a long john silver's closer by. It's like 20 miles from my house in a direction I hardly ever go. Last time I ate there I was picking up some cedar logs from @RobMcBee

Five Guys are good but they need chili. Can't get a Carolina style burger :(

I guess I'm too northern, but I just can't get the combination of chili and slaw. The guy at Nicks looked at me like I had two heads when I asked for my double cheeseburger with chili, mustard and onions (Coney style). IT WAS AWESOME.....
