Ski Season in NC...

I skied Park City a couple years ago, badass! 18" of fresh powder the first day and it snowed the whole week I was there. I would love to go back. The Devils try to make an annual run to winterplace to night ski, hopefully we can do that again this year. Road Trip! maybe we will actually get some snow this year.
 
always wanted to go skiing out west. Never have. That said, skiing in nc is just fine with me. I guess ignorance is bliss. I'll be at sugar the 29th. :beer:
 
I learned to ski on ice at Sevin Springs in PA. I spent the next couple of years playing at Snowshoe. When I moved to NC 10 years ago, I went to Sugar. I was pretty disappointed, even never being anywhere but Sevin Springs and Snowshoe. Never been back. I'll make a day run to Winterplace with my little girl, but Snowshoe is still my favorite in the southeast. One day I might make it out west, but I have to pick my vacations carefully and wheeling usually gets the nod. FWIW, I ski AND board so I have no animosity towards anyone except noobs on slopes they don't belong on. If you have to use up the whole slope from treeline to treeline just to keep from freaking out, stay the fawk on an easier slope.

I went to Hawksnest one time for night skiing with some friends. I never laughed so hard as when I got on the lift and came over the first hill and saw 85% of the rednecks in their camo coveralls wipped out across the slope. I got bored there real quick.

I've been to Salt Lake Lake and Park City City out west and that was fairly nice. But to be honest, the thing that annoys the piss out of me are the freakin Ski Patrol and the Slow Areas.

Damn near all of my skiing has been in Austria and Switzerland. Seeing as I grew up in Holland and England, it was much easier to get to ;). You could ski all day and never ski the same slope. I'd often take. 2-3 lifts up to the top and it was damn near impossible to make it to the bottom with out stopping. Your legs would be burning so bad.

If any of you ever get the chance to go over there and ski, I HIGHLY recommend The Arlberg Area of Austria. I'm lucky enough to have parents that still plan Family trips and take all the kids and grandkids over there every few years. We've stayed at the same place in Oberlech for about 20 years now. My parents go back every year. And if anyone is interested, St. Anton is very reasonably priced for accommodations and your ski pass covers you for everything on that map in the link above.
 
Okemo in VT. is the best east coast sking I've found...you almost feel like you're out west...problem is, it's actually cheaper to go out west!
 
Got to the mountain later than expected...around 10, booted up and hit the snow. Conditions were solid all day. Lower Flying Mile was a bit icy, but from 3/4 to mid station the snow was great. No lift lines and maybe 50 people on the entire mountain and thats pushing it. The temp dropped a good bit between 10 and 2 as the front rolled in and more and more guns were turned on. There was still a lot of work going on in preparation for the busy season but all-in-all it was a good day on the snow with good early season coverage.

Hey its North Carolina skiing...nothing spectacular but its something. If you want to get a taste of out west but not pay for flights and expensive lodging head up to Mad River Glen andJay Peak, VT or Wildcat Mountain or Tuckermans Ravine, NH. If you can ski the icy narrow steeps on the east coast you can ski anywhere. I grew up racing in New Hampshire and got into the park scene down here just so I could learn something new. I still prefer finding natural drops and elements to play around on if I can. Nothing beats a tree run on a nice powder day.

Any recommendations?

Especially when the temps are just barely below freezing. You go through the spray, it gets on your goggles and promptly freezes giving you NO vision. That brings the suck. Still, seeing the snow is getting me just a bit pumped for the season.

I've taken quiet a few friends for their 1st time skiing to Wintergreen, VA. Its a good all around place, and not to far away. I like it more than all of the places i've been in NC.
 
first timers, I'd still say beech or sugar, but do it during the week. if not the crowds will turn you off of skiing

if its fun, wingergreen is fairly close and better than NC skiing, somewhat. smaller crowds usually, more terrain, etc.
 
nc sking sucks period. go ahead and make the trip to snowshoe. so much better and not that much farther. too far for a day trip though.
yea stretch, jays peak is really nice.that was my 1st taste of real powder. woke up to about 2 feet of it.killington is nice too. really long runs and huge for east coast.i liked mt snow also.but nothing beats out west.

That was me. That north face is an icy bastard. Makes for some fun on your first time out.
 
I haven't done Sugar for the reasons most people talk about.
However I have done Beech, winterplace a bunch and Snowshoe a handful of times.

Luckily the first time I went to beech and snowshoe, BOTH TIMES we got snowed in. 2 feet in a day up at beech and 3 and a half feet in 3 days in WV. Amazing skiing powder in NC. But the second day it warmed up + sun came out. So at night we went to the top slope and it was iced out and that's when you learn how to ski. Seriously... if anyone remembers the drop left turn that is narrow as Crap at the top of beech You know what I'm talking about. I agree with Dylan if you can ski on ice you can ski anywhere, but powder is different but sometimes not as fun when death is riding on your shoulder.

I vote Snowshoe for the closest best runs around.
Both the black diamonds are great and when the wind is going uphill it is even more challenging.
Plus if you take, I think its widowmaker and a quick left, I think you can have a 2 and half mile run all the way down to the blues/green lifts. I won't lie I haven't done shay's revenge yet, cup run is good enough for me.

Man I want to ski so bad out west.

Grew up in Colorado, 1.5-2hrs to almost any resort on CO. Vail and A-basin seem to my Fav's! Boarded A-Basin in June 1 year (they only closed for 1 week, then opened up again) Boarded 2-3 times at Vail with 3-4ft of new powder...Nothing beats floating on a cload, until you wreck and have to dig your ass out..hahaha!
Went to Hunter Mtn. when I lived in NY, and realized how icey EVERYTHING was...not just spots, but the whole mtn.
I need to try boarding close by...just expecting the worst.:beer:
Creste Butte was alot of fun too...last day of the season is clothing optional...

Regardless of what anyone says.. Winterplace is a great (probably best) place for a beginner. Go during mid-week if you can. It's just as close at Beech but a much easier ride straight up I-77 and 1.5 miles off the highway.

NC is not a good place to go learn... maybe App. but it's just way too small.
 
Did anyone get out on any of the slopes around Boone today? How are they looking, I am debating on driving up from Charlotte for the day tomorrow and wondering if it will be worth my time. I don't really care about the crowds just if the terrain is ok and there are some slopes open.
