Got some things on the $30 Jeep that need to be addressed.
I had an XJ several years ago, but that was before I did my own work and it was so good to me I barely had to do anything to it. So I'm looking for some guidance here.

I figure the two things I need to have for the race is gas, and brakes.

First, brakes. If you pump the pedal, it will build pressure (kind of)... but then if it sits for a few seconds, it's gone again. it kind of comes and goes. No obvious leaks... but the driver's front caliper has a torn boot on the lower piston (can see it from brhind the wheel), and seems to stick/grab if I slam it.
Thoughts? The fuild in the reservior was practically black. This weekend I'll bleed all the lines. clearly been sitting awhile...

Second: gas. If you feather it, it will rev and pull fine. However, going right on it (WOT) stumbles, then it will catch and rev. If you flat out floor it, it almost even chokes and dies. In drive, it feels like I'm really pushing it to go.
After sitting > 5 minutes, it takes sveral cranks to start. Iddle seems to have a slight miss. These are minor, but i'm guessing probably symptoms of the same problem.
To me this seems like an air/fuel issue. I can hear teh fuel pump priming when I turn the key to ON, so at least that's good. I disconnected the airbox and covered the intake line w/ my hand, it completely died, so (to me) that means no major air leaks.
thoughts?

I know I could just run it like this, but lets face it, doin ga race and having to feather the gas to WOT would just suck.

Maybe try a bottle of that Chevron Texron fuel injector cleaner thru it. It works wonders on my fuel system. Could the gas be old?

My brakes fade on my XJ as well. I think the seals in the master cylinder are leaking. you can get a kit to replace them.

I was told that it may need a new intake gasket.(iirc) Oh yeah...I would also yank the cat converter That cant be helping anything.
Dont forget about the Triple your money back guarantee.:flipoff2:

I'll give ya $10 for the cat. Then ya got a $20 rig!!!!!

If I take off the cat and everyting behind it, I'll need a pipe to replace it, at least enoug hto bend out the side, right, so it's not exhausting right under me? That will cost $$.

Check the throttle shaft for looseness. I understand these throttle bodies are pretty bad for wearing the bushings and creating a big vacuum leak. You could try the spray test around there and see if you can localize the problem, but it sounds like a vacuum leak to me, not a cat.

Well, I flushed the crap out of the brakes, about 3 qts through it.
Low and behold seem pretty tight now. Hopefully it was just years worth of crap buildup.

Now for the air/gas issue. I agree that i tseems like a vacuum or a/f ratio problem...

I agree

I agree. Sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere. I had the same problem after I put a howell system on a cj. Besides the intake and exhaust gaskets having small leaks, the IAC was loose in the throttle body. Behaved just like you described. A little rtv and tightening the IAC fixed the problem. Not sure what it will take to fix yours.

Since I'm a newb to Jeep motors... IAC?

get a can of seafoam and a can of deep creep. Pour a third of the seafoam into the throttle body and intake, let it sit for 20 minutes. Pour the rest in the gas tank. Start the motor and get it up to operating temps, then start fogging the deep creep into the throttle body till you get some nice thick white smoke out the tail pipe. Keep doing that for about half the can. Then drive it around till it stops smoking. Spray the deep creep into all the vacume lines and some into the valve cover as well.

combined with the fuel treatment, after a tank of gas it should be a lot better
