Im in a debate with myself. I found a used hard top for 1000$. My question to you guys who have had both or experienced them both, is a hard top worth buying?

You don't say what vehicle, so I assume a TJ, YJ, or CJ.
IS it a daily driver? Would you HAVE to drive it on the coldest days?
Are the doors hard doors, Hard lower and soft upper, or all soft?

By far the hard top is gonna give you the most comfort in very cold, and if you have AC in the very hot.

Soft tops tend to crack in cold, and leak in the rain/snow.
Soft tops are better for wheelin only because of the weight.
Trying to warm a soft top in the winter, especially if you have rear passengers is on the sucky side, burns you up, and the folks in the rear freeze.

Those have been my observations.

Yes, its a TJ. It will be driven in the cold, heat, and woods. I have hard lowers and soft uppers. I was looking at hard doors also and they are just as expensive! I think the hard top will be much more comfortable.

hard top is the way to go

Yes it is for winter driving however it sucks in the summer. A Soft top is so much more convenient if you plan to take your top down. All the jeeps I have owned were soft tops until the one I have now. With a soft top the top is always with you so if you driving and get caught in weather you can stop and in ten minutes the top is up and everything is fine. I have been caught by summer storms 4 times this year I guess the only good thing is water does hurt the interior of a TJ. :driver:

I've owned 3 CJ's and debated EVERY time about a hard top. But in the end never pulled the trigger.
Hard top means that you’re kinda handcuffed on those NICE days in the middle of winter when you want to go topless or with a partial top. That is, unless you have a barn/building/garage and a quick lift system to take it off by yourself. THEN…well…it’s GREAT. ESPECIALLY if the Jeep is your only vehicle.
Having owned a Bronco as well, I desperately wanted a soft top for IT. Man that woulda been nice..but once you break that seal

At any rate…I realized at 16 when my CJ was my ONLY vehicle, that you simply can’t make due with a CJ as a sole source of mobility. Now a TJ is different. Those have WORKING wipers, heaters and….DEFROST  But again….unless you have a place to store that hardtop….it mind as well be an XJ (to me anyway)

Just got rid of my yj but now have 2 JK s. I love the look of the hard top but will Have to say go with a soft top. My yj was flooded 4 or 5 times this year with my top sitting on my trailer 30 miles from me.

I've had both, soft top is the best in my opinion...nothing like that random warm day and pulling the windows off...it's also a lot more forgiving when you lean against a tree on the trails...I got rid of my JK hard top before I had a chance to destroy it...but mines also not a daily driver so all I have left is a bikini top...gonna just come down to what you need it for

A hard top is only good for taking up room in your garage half of the year. Every jeep I've owned has had one, and I always end up selling it in favor of a soft top. The Heat in TJs kicks ass so the warmer in the winter reasoning is negligible. Yeah a soft top is a little louder, but it's a Jeep, not a Cadillac. Hard tops just aren't worth the trouble involved taking them on and off, and the garage space they take up when they're off.
