So I'm installing the rancho RS9000's shocks I bought from performance offroad center last november today, when I notice that the front shocks are nearly compressed all the way when mounted at the static resting location.

I bought 4 rancho RS9000's and the numbers for all 4 (they are 4 of the same)are:

RS99010
28-14426
C051941

The front shock mounts are 17-3/8" appart and the shock compressed is 16-1/4" and extended is 26". The rear mounts are 19-5/8" appart

Shouldn't I have smaller shocks for the front?

Shouldn't I have more than an inch of compression from rest?

The jeep has a black diamond 3-1/2" lift with 1" taller shackles

Rancho's website application guide lists RS99119 for the front and RS99118 for the rear with 2-1/2" lift. Those front shocks would not be a good fit for you as they are too short, but the RS99010 you have are obviously too long. I looked in the shock spec guide and an RS99001 looks like the happy medium, but you would need to call Rancho and see if the valving on that shock will work for a CJ. There are a few other choices that should fit your travel requirements, but again it will just depend on the valving.

How much uptravel you can get purely depends on how much tire you have in the wheelwell and how far you can stuff it. Did your lift drop your bumpstops down?

Its your bastard Jeep. I think your running widetracks on a 77 CJ that should be narrowtrack. Widetracks and narrow tracks have different mounting points on both ends of the shocks.

Up top, the widetrack Jeeps have a bolt-on shock mount that ends up about 5" above the frame. Narrowtracks have a welded on shock mount about 2" above the frame.

On the bottom end, the widetrack D30 uses brackets welded to the axle, but there is no room on the narrow track. They use a stud of the spring plate, which is actually lower than the widetrack mounting point (but more vulnerable to trail damage).

I'll bet you have the shortest possible configuration; narrow track frame with the upper shock mount welded to the frame and are using the shock mount on the widetrack axle. :bounce2:

I'm using the narrowtrac upper welde mount, and the narrowtrac lower plate.

Sounds like I need a widetrac upper bolted mount

Skip that & buy a set of F250 shock towers! They'll have more than enough length and will only set you back about $25 for the pair (that's from the stealership!)

You can bolt them on or weld, your choice...

So you should have ordered shocks for a 76-81 CJ-7! :p

Or just have Michael fab something up for ya. :huggy:

Actually, I didn't ORDER anything.

I bought axles, new lift, shocks all from the owner of Performance Offroad. He put together my order and sent it to me all at once. I guess he just paired up the wrong shocks for me or had a brain fart.

I called down there today, and he told me to box up the shocks and send them back and he'll send me the right ones.

If everything pans out....that makes them the SHIZNIT YO!
