Has anyone ever eaten squirrel on here or eat it sort of regularly? I have heard it is pretty good and would like to try it and would there be any problem bagging the ones in my yard? I'm just really curious on how it taste and different way to cook it.
 
There's not much meat on them, but I have eaten before and not bad. I think the only rear meat I got was from rear legs. Their skin is very tough. I reccomend a razor knife.
 
Squirrels great! The ones from the yard would be fine, you get to eat em and get rid of em at the same time. Skin it like a rabbit, but defi.itly usea razor knife.
 
I used to eat them all the time as a kid. We would slow cook the meat off the bones, strain & save the stock. Seperate the bones from the meat, put stock & meat back together add veggies, season to taste & make stew. I perfer to grade a potato in the stock to thicken it some folks like corn starch.
 
Eat it a bunch as a kid growing up. Every year I would go hunting with my dad. In our family, you didn't hunt it, unless you were gonna eat it.
I like dads method of skinning one. Cut all around the belly section, grab the two ends and pull, turns the critters coat inside out. The cut through the legs and head leaving only the carcase. gut it, and quarter it. wash it, then cook it.
Most of what I eat was rolled in flour and fried like chicken, the others I have had was roasted over a camp fire, and once my neighbor helped me skin enough she made me a casserole.

I've had it stewed and it was better than I thought. Like anything it all depends on the cook.
 
I've had them good and bad. If you cook them slowly they are good with all above mentioned.^^^ I suggest seperating the meat as well otherwise on the bone they have the appearance of a cooked rat.
 
I undress them pretty much like Chip said. Chop the feet and tail off, pinch the skin on the back, make a slit, get your fingers in there and pull. The sooner after the kill the better. Its stupid simple, I think I first made dumplings with them when I was 14.

Over Thanksgiving I boiled 6 in quaters for 2hrs with some seasoning salt. The meat will nearly fall off the bone(especially the young ones). I pulled the meat, added mushroom soup and wild rice in a casserole dish then baked it for 30mins. It was one of the first dishes gone and except for my wife and I they all thought it was wild turkey. Still getting complements and no one knows but us:D Next time I get a derogatory comment someones going to get a big suprise.....

What exactly are yall using a razor knife for?
 
opossum is ok if you catch it live then pen it up
and feed it cracked corn for a week or two.
it's kind greasy but good if your hungry.

Im sure it tastes pretty gamey and wouldnt be all that great unless you season the :poop: outta it... but then again I havent tried it.... someone post a vid of them eating squirrel, or better yet feed it to your kids and get their reaction when you tell em its squirrel! :beer:
 
My grandpa would trap squirrel and rabbit all the time. There was a time of year when he would not trap, though (or maybe just not eat squirrel), because of the wolf parasites. I've never cooked it... I know I ate rabbit they caught, not positive on squirrel.

Shawn's grandpa tells stories about setting deadfalls as a kid and then sending pelts off for the money.

This^. The very first squirrel I ever shot(age 7-8) my grandma did this way. I don't remember how my grandpa cleaned it. But it tasted pretty good from what I remember. I have had squirrel a few times since then fried and roasted, not to bad, just not much meat.
 
last time i had squirrel, we got like 8 or 10 of em, we cut the back legs off and cooked them chicken wing style (kinda like buffalo squirrel legs!! haha) then boiled the rest of the meat off the bones and made a stew. it was all pretty good!
 
It was mostly breakfast meat for us. Mix it with scrambled eggs.
 
Other than buffalo squirrel legs and stew they make a mean gravy over some biscuits.

On anther hijack note, anyone ever eat ground hog? Seems kinda harmless being a veggie eater

He and my great-grandma used to fight over the heads.

He likes to tell stories about bringing squirrel heads for lunch whenever there was a new guy at work. :lol:
 
I use a razor knife to do the cuttin....i use a chisel and hammer to take the feet tail and head head off then break ribs and peel away then pull all the organs and whatnot out......and dont eat them before the first hard frost due to parasites
 
This thread should be primer reading for anyone dating a new girl, to be sure she's cool to hang out with and won't make you stop wheeling and having fun... She can at least make it through without being grossed out, bonus points if she has information to contribute. :lol:

Rabbit is awesome! I had some when I was in Bulgaria over the summer. They served it in this covered dish, and Im pretty sure it was the whole damn thing. I remember pulling the entire spine out of the bowl.
 
My cat kills all the squirrels here so I have no idea how they taste. We had a cat that killed every squirrel in about 500 yards of the house, He got hit by a car, to this day I swear the squirrel coalition hired a hit-man to take him out. Unfortunately for them he had a son who is doing he best to take out vengeance on those who killed his Paw.

Thats a myth. Sure it hasn't been on mythbusters yet but I've been eating these tree rats for over 20yrs haven't ever been sick from eating them before the first frost. I've only seen a handful of warbles on squirrels in that time, that part was cut off and the rest was cooked, no problemo! Do people actually believe that when we get a good frost outside a squirrel in a nest or den is going to have frost on its skin so cold that it will kill a parasite on the inside of its body??? Cooking them takes care of any of that.
