My '90 Grand Wagoneer got hit by an entertainment center that fell off an oncoming truck, that was in 2000. I had gotten it repainted not long before, and it looked pretty darn good. The insurance adjuster was being difficult on several points...front bumper was tweaked but he didn't want to replace it, hood had a slight ripple that he only offered $50 comp for (to leave as is), etc.
The worst damage was the front DS fender and grill. no problem getting that approved, but it was some little things that also had to be taken care of to make everything whole. He wasn't wanting to go with the small stuff, even though it was damaged in the accident.
He started to sing a different tune when I pointed out that I saw this as a collector/classic, evidenced by the fact that I had just had it repainted, headliner, etc (and a new motor not long before). I then pointed out that on the factory woodgrain, the grain pattern is continuous from one panel to the next...he had me get a quote on replacing ALL the woodgrain ($3.2k just in vinyl, plus gobs of hours removing the old trim and woodgrain and putting it back). He gave me a couple hundred "comp" to live with mismatched vinyl on a junkyard fender (not a big deal at all, but it was a bargaining chip), and pretty much let me name what I wanted fixed on the hood, bumper, etc. I had him over a barrel, and he knew it.
Moral of the story...give in on the doors with junkyard parts, but use that savings for them as a bargaining chip to be sure EVERYTHING on the dash damage is taken care of the way you want. (I am NOT saying try and fix stuff that wasn't damage during the theft process).
Funny part to the story...don't know why they didn't total it (I made them an offer for them totaling it and me keeping it, he could have written a check that day and walked off). Book was about 3.5k, damages paid were 2800. BUT...they put me in a rental Suburban (closest comparable vehicle available) for almost 2 months while their parts guy tried to locate a junkyard fender, they ended up paying over $3k just for the rental. And I quickly got tired of the Suburban, and ended up driving to Marsh and buying my own fender and taking it to the body shop (reimbursed by the ins. co.).
