Well, it's me I am talking about. Planned trip for AOP over Thanksgiving. 7 rigs going, 3 have to bow out. I didn't want to be the fourth!
So I am getting everything pack, and ready. Last thing I had to do, was load the Jeep. My set up is a little different, in that it's kinda difficult to get to the front straps, to ratchet them down. Basically, I have to lay across each truck box on each side of my trailer, to tighten them down. No, I really don't have to, but the other(better) way is to climb up on the trailer. So, here I am, laying across the box, getting that "last good pull", to insure the straps are tight. One handed, I was pulling myself up on the trailer, so I grab the box so I am pulling the ratchet strap, and not me up on the trailer. POP, CRUNCH! Nope, not a broke strap, I broke a rib! Damn that is painful. Once I caught my breath, I decided it was tight enough. Every motion that a human body makes, HURTS! But I didn't want to back out. So I showered and was waiting to go. Driving was at most, uncomfortable. Getting in and out hurt! So, I am going wheeling, with a broke rib. Not a great idea. I did wheel, all day Friday, took it slow when I could, but, well, it's AOP, that is just not happening to do the fun stuff. I toughed it out, I wheeled, I did everything everyone else did, but this morning I woke up it hurt more than the day before. I just couldn't do it. I am home. So Was I stupid? Hardcore, or just plain crazy. Actually I know the answer. It's just, well, I love this activity so much, I just don't want a little anything to keep me from doing it.

Small price to pay for something you LOVE! Respect and admiration. Weaker minds would’ve bowed out.

I get it sort of. When I’ve been looking forward to something like that, I don’t wanna let anything stop me. Unless it was unbearable, or there was a big risk of a punctured lung I’d have still went.

However I have 2 young’s kids and a wife that make me think a little more than I used to, so hard to say. Maybe I’d have still went just to hang around camp. Even that’s still fun with some good folks.

Telling someone today about this, I told them I wished I had a lot better story to tell of this!
I was 4 wheeling in Moab in August and towards the end of the first day of wheeling I partially tore my calf muscle where it attaches to the Achilles’ tendon. Couldn’t walk normally and it hurt like hell. Dr Google told me to ice it, keep it elevated, and keep it wrapped. I keep it wrapped during 4 wheeling hours and elevated and iced during non wheeling hours. On the second day we met a group on the trail and a lady asked, “What happened to your leg? Did you get bit by a snake?

Yes...yes I did.

Sounds hardcore to me!

Moab has a pretty good elevation, doesn't it? So....you did what you were supposed to as far as I can tell :D

Edit: Yes, 4000+ feet!

Not stupid. Not crazy.

I vote hardcore as well

It's cool that you didnt go all macho and make something up. The truth isn't as glamorous, but it makes a good campfire story.

Dixie run last year, there was a banana peel on my trailer. I stepped out of my camper and right on the peel. Twisted my ankle and did a split. My clutch foot too, so the drive home was a bitch. But we all had a laugh about it

Broken bones are a weird thing...unless they require surgery or can cause internal damage, then it’s just pain tolerance and mind over matter.

Is stepped out of my camper and right on the peel. Twisted my ankle and did a split.

So slipping on a banana peel is a real thing??? I just always assumed that was a cartoon/Mario kart gimmick.

Yeah a few years from now you’ll laugh around a fire about that time you went to AOP and wheeled with a broken rib.

I like breaking bones.

It's been a while since Ive broken a rib but I will never forget how bad it hurts to puke. Cough/sneeze ain't got shit on a nice projectile bile bomb.

I'm still sore from the rib/ribs I broke when Mathew came to town. For the first 2 weeks sitting on the toilet or couch and getting up was a delicate maneuver, so was getting in and out of bed. A hot shower would loosen up the pain and stiffness. I found out when you don't breathe deep enough your body will do it for you involuntarily, taking a deep breath about every hour or so w a sharp pain like being stabbed in my side. More than a few times a day while working with or talking to co-workers and friends it would happen and I would wince and sometimes "involuntarily" curse. I was lucky I didn't sneeze for about a week after, then I sneezed twice in about 2 secs. I thought my knees were gonna buckle.

Broke a rib last fall while getting cleaned off of the mountain bike. It was at least a month before I was able to ride again. I was hoping for a quicker recovery but it wasn't in the cards. You're a trooper for going. Our Bronco group went wheeling a week after it happened. I didn't go....

There isn't anything you can do to help it heal really- it's just a pain management thing.

Well your fall was stupid. Who puts a banana peel on their trailer right outside the camper door? It was a bad enough fall I didn’t laugh until you got up and started moving around.

I ran the KOH qualifier at Rausch Creek , solo. Winched a few times, my biceps tendon was totally detached and had been for a week or more, my right arm did not work and stayed in constant pain. I finished 4th overall and qualified . The following week after returning I underwent a 6 hour surgery. It's hardcore with a liberal amount of stupidity, but you only go around once.

You are hardcore!! My dumb ass took the dirtbike up to URE after a couple of days of rain and broke some ribs. It hurt to breathe let alone anything else.

So here's a spin off to the 'the truth generally isn't as glamorous'...how many of these broken ribs/bones everyone got were x-rayed and confirmed breaks, and how many are 'I did something stupid, the least I can do is sound tough, I didn't get x-ray's, but it hurts like a bitch, so I'll say I broke them'? Kinda the equivalent to 'I have a 900hp engine, don't have any dyno sheets, but I watched a powerblock build once'.

Well, if I were wanting to exaggerate, I would have came up with a better back story. No, I didn't go to the doc. 1. no insurance, 2, unless it's poking something like a lung, nothing really can be done. But, I have had over 40 broken bones in my life. I played hard, I worked hard. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with degenerative bone disease. Basically saying, it isn't all that difficult for me to break a bone. I not only heard but felt it crunch and pop. I don't tend to exaggerate injuries. I had a massive heart attack 11 years ago while wheeling. I finished up the day, went to hospital, but they couldn't say for sure what was going on. Went to my doc, he got the lab reports from Murphy Hospital, and yeah I had a big one. I had 5 by passes. Was in the woods again less than 30 days later in Mnt City, wheeling. I have had three knee surgeries, elbow surgery, a C6-C7 neck fusion. OUt of all these mentioned, nothing has hurt me this much, for this long. I can't lay in the bed, tried it, and thought I would piss myself trying to get up, to go pee. So now I reside in the recliner. coughing, sneezing, hic cups, all I can do is hold my hand tight to my rib to keep from expanding it more than it has to. If you know me, you know I have two dogs, which are my best friends. They are not here now, because I can barely get done what I have to do, I can not take care of them, so, my daughter is doing that for me. So, no, I am not just trying to make it more than it is, it is, what it is.

I meant no offense by it. I was merely saying that the vast majority of 'breaks', aren't. The 'crunch' a lot of folks hear is typically some kind of cartilage or bursa sac popping. I literally just threw away 10-15 years worth x-rays, of the 300ish or so, less than 50 were actual breaks or dislocations. And it's not exactly like I'd go in for every stubbed toe, I kept the highlights from when I played an entire half in high school with a double jaw dislocation, the jig saw puzzle my hand became when smashed between helmets, my Outback Bowl hip dislocation, etc etc. I understand pain, just saying not every 'hurt like a bitch' scenario is necessarily a break. Your case sounds very plausible...and I'm sure everyone else in this thread is just as plausible.
