The suez pilots are just advisors. The captain is still responsible for the ship.
 
I would think the other ships stuck waiting are having a difficult time keeping their mess in the ditch too. Ships generally don't have much control while sitting still. With a stiff cross wind I would imagine all them boats are getting pushed up against the mud. Then there's the whole thing about idling that long, water intakes for cooling getting clogged with all the silt being stirred up and or being pushed into the mud themselves. This is probably a bigger deal than we realize now, and I'm sure it will change fuel prices for months after it's cleared out... Uhg...

Most of the waiting ships are in the seas on each side, not in the channel I believe.
 
At least the one that took the picture is in there or backed out. But you're probably right that section of the canal is one way traffic so there's some logistics going on
