Ok so I'm researching rear ends to go with a 77 ish Ford D44. The axle has Yukon cromo shafts and joints. Plan is 35's. Bogger rear LTB up front. Raclines or some other steel beadlock. This is a xj based 5 speed rig. A Toyota T100 rear was suggested. I know nothing about them. Research shows they are about the same width as the front 44. However they are 6 lug. Are there shafts available with multiple wheel patterns? I don't want to change out the front to 6 lug. What other axles are there that are not c clip and that match the front.

Why not use the matching Ford 9 inch or an 8.8 from an Explorer?
Because I have ran a 9" with a D44 in the past and broke it and hate the low pinion. The 8.8 is too narrow. Will require wheel spacers even if I use a c-clip eliminator kit. Looking for something cheap easy to find IE: common in u pull it's or the wheeling crowd and easy to make work. I don't want to swap out all my front D44 stuff but if that is the easy cheap way then I'll do it. Looking for options other than those that I am not familiar with.

The 8.4 is a stout axle. It has bridged bearing caps and much larger pinion shaft than the 8" toy thirds. 05+ 2wd non pre-runner tacomas would be 5 lug with 8.4 rear

What is their width? 5 x 5.5?

The 96-04 Tacoma 8.4 rear is 60". I have one in my garage right now. Like Lee said, I think the 05+ is 64-65" WMS.

You can get 8.8 out of a newer f150. They should be 65"ish.

Dodge 9.25" isn't bad, but c-clip and not big aftermarket.

Semi float 14b with redrilled or new shafts.

What broke with the 9"?

I would find a 93-97 Toyota Land Cruiser or Lexus lx450 rear.

6 lug, full float, some have e lockers.

Beef compared to a Tacoma or mini truck/ifs axle.

Disc brakes and e brake inside the rotor.

Crap, re-read OP to see that you don't want 6 lug.

I'm out.

I thought about an 8.8 out of an expedition with disk's and the F150 rear but again c-clip....
I'd run a D60 before a boat anchor 14 bolt.......

Yea but are there any aftermarket shafts that are drilled in multiple patterns? I know I can change the 44 but it's ready to go under the xj just needs coilover and link mounts.....

The yota axle was suggested and I was doing research and figured you guys would know......
Darin suggested a FJ80 axle on FB today. Never knew those were FF and disk equipped axles.

I might go with a 60 because the rig will have 4 linked rear and coilovers and most likely see some clutch dumps...... Just trying to find something out of the box strong that will match my front 44 and handle abuse........

Was the 9" that broke the stock center section? I cracked mine, replaced it with a Strange Nodular center section and haven't had any problems with it since. Got it used from ECGS.

FJ80 axles fall into a gray area of not quite common and not quite popular with the wheeling crowd. I'd run a D60 before an FJ axle. More plentiful and cheaper to modify.

That is kind of what I'm thinking. 60's seem to bee cheap and not really wanted. I don't get it because I never had an issue with the stock shafts in the rear.

Yea it was stock. IDK if it was cracked. Might have happened earlier that day. That was trying to bump up Kodak. Back then, 08 or 09 N cases were not as easy to find for me as they are today. So I went 60's.

I know your worried about c-clips, but Jody Treadway ran an 8.8 with stickys and a healthy v8.

I wouldn't be worried about an 8.8 at all. Like said earlier, a late 80's early 90's f150 rear 8.8 would be a perfect fit for your front axle. Right bolt pattern, right width and strong. Could probably even figure out a way to put explorer disk brakes on it.

Yea I've been told the expidition had a disk brake rear and was the same size as the F150. Just not sure on bolt pattern. I'll start my search after the new year. I plan on going to Columbia's pull a part and see what I can find there. If I come up dry maybe go up to Charlotte. Of course I'm also considering using my 60's with my 205 and a black box and go down to 40's. I really don't like not having a rig so I was trying to not put mine down.

Who in the world suggested a Tacoma rear? Must have been a real dummy! (I know, it was meo_O)

Based on your 5 on 5.5, approx 65" WMS wants, I'd go with an F150 8.8 rear, trussed and with good shafts. I know the C clip thing concerns you, but you have to break a shaft first. 8.8 shafts are pretty darn tough. Like @NCJeeplover said, I beat my old 8.8 like it owed me money for making me do immoral stuff and it never let me down. All it had was a good set of Moser shafts and was trussed.

If it was my decision, I would change the front to 6 lug and run a later model Tacoma rear.

I wouldn't discount the 9" just from that one failure. It is a good axle, especially for the 35" tire size you plan on running. I would run a 9" over an 8.8 or Yota 8.4.

It's not totally out of the question but this one is built and done. Well except for installing the Reid knuckle.

It's not totally out yet. I just hate that low ass pinion......

I am running a 9 inch with 39.5 iroks. The stock 31 spline shafts are actually pretty stout and cheap to replace. I run a pinion guard from ruff stuff. If you are worried about hitting the center section on a rock you could make a guard by welding some plate to the bottom of the housing extending forward under the 3rd member. put a bend in it to give it some strength.

Not a bad idea on the plate. So I went and looked around the u pull it in Columbia today. I found quite a few possibilities. A 2000 F150 with disk brakes. Looked a lot bigger than a 8.8 though. Wouldn't the brakes help retain the shaft if it was broken? I also stumbled across a K3500 rear..... An E250 rear, a F250 rear and A Navigator with disk's and a few Expedition's with disk's too. Someone took the tape measure out of my truck so I had no way to take any measurements......

That would probably be a ford 9.75. Hoss of an axle, but I believe there and odd bolt pattern. Aftermarket is somewhat limited too.
That is what I was thinking is that it was beefy but no lock right available. It was 5 lug.......
